Choose a capture method and schedule
Scheduling and rendering are separate jobs: a scheduler starts your process, and a browser loads the page and produces the PDF. Choose the browser method based on what the site needs.

Before choosing, consider whether the page needs login or interaction, how much delay is acceptable, where PDFs will be retained, who maintains the browser runtime, and whether the PDF should use print or screen styling.
Capture a simple page with Chrome Headless
Install Chrome on the machine that will run the job, then test a capture manually before scheduling it. Replace the URL and output path with your own. Chrome’s --print-to-pdf writes a PDF, while --no-pdf-header-footer suppresses printed headers and footers.

chrome --headless --no-pdf-header-footer --print-to-pdf=/absolute/path/captures/site-2026-10-03.pdf https://example.comTo keep files from overwriting one another, have your scheduled process generate the date portion of the filename at run time. Check which Chrome executable name and path are available on the machine where the job will run.
Control when Chrome captures
Chrome Headless provides --timeout to set a maximum wait before capture, even if the page is still loading, and --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent page code. For example:

Inspect the resulting PDF and adjust the wait based on the target page rather than assuming a fixed delay works for every site. Use Playwright for scripted pages or PDF settings
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the environment that will run the capture. The following Node.js example navigates to a page, waits for the page’s load event, and writes a PDF. Save it as capture.mjs and run it with Node.js after installing the Playwright package and browser.

}Create the captures directory before running this example, or change the path to an existing directory. Replace the fixed date with a date generated by your scheduled script if you want a new file each day. The load event is only an example readiness point; pages that load content later may need an explicit wait for a selector or another site-specific condition.
Set print behavior deliberately
page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. If the PDF should reflect screen styles, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf(). The API also supports settings such as paper size, margins, page ranges, background printing, and tagged output. PDF generation is supported for Chromium in Playwright’s documented export feature. Run the capture daily with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions can start the capture script on a recurring POSIX cron schedule. Add a workflow file such as .github/workflows/daily-capture.yml to the repository’s default branch. This example runs at 03:17 UTC each day, installs Playwright and Chromium, and runs a script committed as capture.mjs.

Configure an appropriate storage or artifact step if you need files available beyond the runner’s job, and decide how long to retain them. Keep credentials out of source code; if the page needs authentication, use the hosting platform’s secret-management facilities and ensure access is permitted by the site.
Choose the time zone and account for schedule delays
GitHub schedule times are UTC by default; its workflow syntax also documents an IANA timezone option. The shortest supported schedule interval is five minutes. GitHub warns scheduled events can be delayed during high load, particularly near the start of an hour, and queued jobs can be dropped if load is sufficiently high. Choosing a minute away from the beginning of the hour can reduce the chance of delay, but does not guarantee an exact start time. Check GitHub’s schedule syntax and caveats before relying on it for time-sensitive captures.

Scheduled workflows run from the default branch, and the workflow file must exist there. GitHub automatically disables scheduled workflows in public repositories after 60 days without repository activity, so check the repository’s activity and workflow status if a public project’s daily runs stop.

- Use a date or timestamp in each filename so a later run does not silently replace an earlier capture.
- After a run, verify that the PDF exists, has a plausible file size, and opens with the content and page layout you expect.
- Review the rendered result when changing the page, browser, waits, or PDF settings; a successful process exit alone does not prove the page content was complete.
- Monitor scheduled-run failures and maintain the browser and automation dependencies. Playwright recommends keeping its version current and documents browser installation options.
- Decide how long to retain captures and where to store them. A scheduled job does not automatically guarantee archival retention.
Troubleshooting common failures

Can a scheduled PDF capture run at exactly the same time every day?
Not reliably with GitHub Actions: scheduled runs can be delayed during high load, so use a scheduler with guarantees appropriate to your timing requirements.
Does Playwright create PDFs in every browser engine?
No. The documented Playwright PDF export feature supports Chromium.
Do I need a new computer to run a daily capture?
Not necessarily. You can use a machine you already control or a hosted workflow, provided its browser runtime and file storage meet your needs.
