On a desktop, open the tax page, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (Mac), choose a PDF destination, enable Headers and footers if available, and check the preview for both the address and date before saving. Browser controls differ, and a URL is not guaranteed to appear in every browser’s PDF header or footer.
Save the page as a PDF with its date and URL
- Open the page you need. Wait for its information to load. For an account page, check that the correct tax year, filing status, or record is displayed. Avoid printing until the relevant details are visible.
- Open Print. Use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS. You can also open Print from the browser menu. See Chrome’s print instructions and Microsoft Edge’s print instructions.
- Choose PDF output. Select a browser destination such as Save as PDF. Depending on your system, a PDF option may also be available through the operating system’s print dialog. The CFPB describes built-in Windows and macOS PDF output options in its guide to saving a document as a PDF.
- Show headers and footers. Expand the print settings and turn on Headers and footers if the option is present. Browser implementations differ: Edge documents the current date in the header and page number in the footer, while Firefox provides a print headers-and-footers control. Neither description guarantees that every browser and platform prints the URL in the same place. Check the preview rather than assuming. See Firefox’s print settings.
- Review the preview. Confirm the page content, date, and address are present and readable. Check all pages for clipped text or missing material. Adjust scale, margins, page range, orientation, or background printing if needed; the available options vary by browser.
- Save and verify. Choose a descriptive filename and save. Reopen the PDF and confirm it contains the expected pages and visible date/address context.
The printed date is the browser’s current date when you print; it does not establish when the tax page was first published or last changed.

Choose browser printing or a portal-issued PDF
Use browser printing when you need a readable visual copy of a webpage, such as a page showing account information. If the recipient requires an official tax record, authentication, or a portal-issued document, look for the tax authority’s own download or print feature instead. A browser printout is a rendering of what appeared on screen, not automatically an authenticated tax document.

United States: IRS reports and transcripts
For the IRS tax compliance report covered by its FAQ, the IRS states: “A screenshot, scanned copy or file created with ‘Print to PDF’ isn’t the digitally authenticated document.” If authentication is required for that report, use and share the original downloaded PDF as directed by the IRS. This warning concerns that digitally authenticated report; it is not a universal statement that every browser printout is invalid for every tax purpose. See the IRS Online Account FAQ.

IRS Individual Online Account users can view, print, or download transcripts; the IRS says transcript download and printing have no fee. Use the IRS transcript itself when that is the requested record, rather than treating a printout of the surrounding webpage as equivalent. See IRS Get Transcript.
India: portal PDF downloads
The Indian Income Tax Department’s e-filing guide describes downloading or printing a return preview as a PDF. Its guide dates to 2021, so it establishes that PDF output is available in that documented workflow, not that its click-by-click instructions remain current. The department’s AIS information page also describes PDF as a download format and says the PDF is password-protected. When the header or URL is missing
- No headers-and-footers setting: Some browser versions or managed devices may not expose the control. Check the expanded print settings or browser menu; if it remains unavailable, the browser may not support adding that information in its PDF workflow.
- Date appears but URL does not: Do not assume the date setting also prints the address. Inspect the preview. If the URL is absent, the print output may not support it in that browser/platform combination. You can retain the page address separately in your records, but that will not make it part of the PDF.
- Page content is clipped or missing: Try a different scale, margins, orientation, or page range and inspect every preview page. For content that loads only after scrolling or after a delay, wait until it is visible before opening Print.
- PDF looks unlike the portal page: Print output is a browser rendering, not a guaranteed replica of the on-screen interface. If a clean visual capture is the goal, use the screenshot option below; if an official record is required, download the portal’s own PDF.

Can I use a browser PDF as an official tax document?
Only if the receiving organization accepts it for that purpose. For an authenticated IRS tax compliance report, the IRS requires the original downloaded PDF rather than a Print to PDF copy.
Why is my downloaded AIS PDF password-protected?
The Indian Income Tax Department’s AIS information page describes its PDF download as password-protected. Follow the department’s instructions for opening that portal-issued file.
