Set the time zone using the scheduler’s own supported setting: Cronie crontab uses CRON_TZ, Kubernetes CronJobs use .spec.timeZone, and AWS EventBridge Scheduler uses a separate schedule time-zone setting. These mechanisms are not interchangeable, and their daylight-saving-time behavior differs.
First decide whether the schedule follows UTC or local clock time
Use UTC when a job must run at a consistent UTC time or interval, independent of seasonal clock changes. Use a named civil time zone when it must follow local time—for example, a daily task that should run at the same local hour as the people or systems it serves.

For a local-time schedule, decide what should happen when the clock jumps past a scheduled time in spring or repeats an hour in autumn. A “same local time every day” requirement does not, by itself, determine whether a job should be skipped, run twice, or run once on those transition days.
Set the time zone in the scheduler you use
Cronie and traditional Linux cron
Cronie supports CRON_TZ in a crontab. Put the assignment before the entries it governs, and write the schedule fields as wall-clock time in that zone:

CRON_TZ=Asia/Tokyo
5 0 * * * /path/to/job
This example means 00:05 in the specified zone, subject to support for Cronie’s extension and acceptance of the zone identifier by the installed daemon. Cronie’s manual illustrates the setting with CRON_TZ=Japan and explains that the table’s times are interpreted in that zone. See the Cronie crontab manual.
Cronie documents an important observability wrinkle: job log timestamps use the daemon’s local time zone, not necessarily the crontab’s CRON_TZ. A log entry can therefore appear to have run at a different wall-clock time from the schedule you wrote. Check the daemon host’s zone when interpreting those timestamps.

Kubernetes CronJob
Set the CronJob’s .spec.timeZone to a valid time-zone name, such as Etc/UTC or an appropriate IANA region name. Keep TZ and CRON_TZ out of .spec.schedule: Kubernetes documents inline time-zone specifications there as unsupported. For example:

The manifest sets a valid time-zone field and illustrates the structure; replace the example image and workload with your own. Confirm the field and behavior against the Kubernetes documentation version matching your cluster. The Kubernetes v1.35 CronJob documentation describes .spec.timeZone and rejects inline TZ or CRON_TZ specifications.

AWS EventBridge Scheduler
Configure the schedule’s time zone separately from its cron expression, using the schedule time-zone setting or the --schedule-expression-timezone option. EventBridge Scheduler evaluates cron schedules in UTC or the selected zone and uses the IANA Time Zone Database. Its expression has six fields—minute, hour, day-of-month, month, day-of-week, and year—so do not assume a five-field Linux cron expression can be copied unchanged. The details are in AWS EventBridge Scheduler schedule types. These instructions apply to EventBridge Scheduler, not legacy EventBridge scheduled rules.
What happens at daylight-saving transitions?
| Scheduler | Nonexistent spring-forward time | Repeated fall-back time |
|---|---|---|
| Cronie crontab | A matching time in the missing hour does not match, so the job is skipped. | A matching time in the repeated hour can run twice. |
| Kubernetes CronJob | The cited v1.35 documentation does not establish a general gap policy. | The cited v1.35 documentation does not establish a general overlap policy. |
| AWS EventBridge Scheduler | An invocation at a nonexistent local time is skipped. | The invocation runs once, not twice. |
The Cronie behavior is documented in its crontab manual; AWS documents its policy in the EventBridge Scheduler schedule types. Do not infer Kubernetes transition behavior from either product. Check the documentation for your cluster version and test how your application should handle transition-day timing.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Design for missed or repeated triggers
A cron trigger is not automatically an exactly-once guarantee. Kubernetes says Job creation is approximate: circumstances can result in two Jobs or no Job for a scheduled execution time. If duplicate or absent work would affect correctness, make the task safe to retry and provide a way to detect or recover missed work. For example, process a uniquely identified time window and record completion durably, rather than assuming each trigger can occur only once.

Cronie’s documented DST behavior can also mean a local-time entry is skipped or repeated, while AWS explicitly skips a nonexistent time and invokes only once in a repeated hour. Build application-level handling around the behavior you have verified for the selected scheduler; do not treat the cron expression alone as a transaction or exactly-once mechanism.

Check the schedule before relying on it
- Identify the scheduler and version. Confirm whether the host runs Cronie or another cron implementation, which Kubernetes version serves the cluster, or whether you are configuring EventBridge Scheduler rather than a different AWS scheduling feature.
- Use the scheduler’s time-zone field. Apply
CRON_TZonly where the installed Cronie daemon supports it, Kubernetes.spec.timeZonefor a CronJob, or EventBridge Scheduler’s separate time-zone setting. - Verify the expression grammar. EventBridge Scheduler uses six cron fields including year; check the target platform’s documented syntax before copying an expression.
- Validate zone and transition expectations. Confirm the selected identifier is accepted, and determine the expected result for both a nonexistent and a repeated local time.
- Separate schedule time from observed log time. For Cronie, account for daemon-local log timestamps even when the crontab uses another zone. Verify logging conventions for other platforms in their own documentation.
- Make work recoverable. Where duplicates or missed executions matter, use idempotent processing and a recovery path instead of relying on a trigger being delivered exactly once.
