To schedule automatic cleanup, open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, turn Storage Sense on, then choose a frequency under Run Storage Sense. The setting is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact frequency choices can vary by device. Storage Sense runs only when you are signed in and online for more than 10 minutes.
How to configure the Storage Sense schedule
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense.
- Select Storage Sense to open its settings.
- Under Run Storage Sense, choose how often it should run from the options shown on your PC.
- Review the separate cleanup settings for the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and locally available cloud content before leaving them enabled.
Microsoft’s instructions for managing drive space with Storage Sense cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. The guide does not list one universal set of frequency options, so use the choices displayed in your Windows settings.

What the schedule does—and what the default does not do
Choosing a frequency under Run Storage Sense sets the recurring run behavior. Simply turning Storage Sense on does not necessarily create a calendar schedule: with default settings, it runs when the device is low on disk space and cleans unnecessary temporary files. It does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those rules separately.
The schedule is not a promise of a run at a particular clock time. Microsoft says Storage Sense needs you to be signed in and online for more than 10 minutes to run. If the PC is off, offline, or you are signed out, it may not run at the selected interval.

Check what Storage Sense may remove or move
Recycle Bin
You can choose how long items remain in the Recycle Bin before Storage Sense deletes them. Review this age threshold before relying on automatic cleanup, especially if you use the Recycle Bin as a temporary recovery location.
Downloads
Downloads cleanup is off unless you configure it. If enabled, its separate rule can delete files that have not been opened for the period you select. Check that threshold carefully: a file can be important even if you have not opened it recently.

Cloud files
When you are signed in to a cloud account, Storage Sense may offer settings for locally available cloud content. Eligible inactive files can be made online-only to free local space; this is not permanent deletion, and the files can be downloaded again when there is a network connection and enough disk space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Microsoft says that starting with Windows 11, version 22H2, the default for OneDrive cloud files is to make files online-only if they have not been opened for more than 30 days.
Which drives and cleanup tools are covered?
Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. To manage other drives, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives. Microsoft explains the system-drive limitation in its Storage Sense guide.

Running Storage Sense now, using cleanup recommendations, and running Disk Cleanup are separate actions or workflows; none changes the frequency selected under Run Storage Sense. For other ways to free space, Microsoft also documents freeing up space for Windows updates.
