You can prepare a YouTube Live event in Studio, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible local video files in order, and send that output to the event’s server URL and stream key. Scheduling the event does not start FFmpeg or take the broadcast live: at showtime, start the encoder, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
1. Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, open Manage, and choose Schedule stream.
- Reuse the settings from a previous stream or create a new scheduled event. Scheduling lets you promote the event, offer reminders, and share its URL. See YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions.
- Open the event’s stream settings and note its server URL and stream key. You will enter both in FFmpeg’s output settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a command you share.
The event is the viewer-facing broadcast; the incoming encoder feed is a separate step. YouTube’s documented workflow is to start the encoder at the scheduled time, wait for the preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room. Confirm the current event’s URL, key, and encoder guidance in Studio because platform settings and labels can change.

2. Build a concat playlist file
Create a plain-text file named, for example, playlist.ffconcat. Put the exact header on its first line, followed by one file directive per video in playback order:

file 'part-03.mp4'The header must be the first line, spelled exactly as shown, for FFmpeg to recognize the concat format automatically. Paths are resolved relative to the playlist file unless otherwise specified. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths or directives. Relative, simple filenames are the easiest way to stay within that default. Absolute paths or paths containing spaces and special characters need correct quoting and escaping; a quoted example is not guaranteed to work unchanged for every filename. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the safe-path rules and syntax. Do not disable safety casually: that relaxes path validation.

Make sure the files can be concatenated
The concat demuxer joins media at the packet level rather than making unlike files identical. FFmpeg’s rule is: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Stream layout and relevant properties must match for clean concatenation. Inspect the inputs and compare their audio/video streams before relying on this method.
File durations matter too. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally; files with different stream lengths can leave gaps, and inaccurate or missing duration metadata can cause artifacts. The playlist format supports a duration directive to override a file’s reported duration when needed. Use it only when you know the correct duration and have checked the resulting timeline. 3. Choose the right concat method

FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The demuxer is the more direct option when the inputs meet its matching-stream requirements and avoiding re-encoding is appropriate.
4. Configure FFmpeg to send the live output
FFmpeg must read the playlist, encode or pass through audio and video as appropriate, and send the output to the scheduled event’s server URL using its stream key. YouTube identifies the URL and key as encoder settings, but there is no universal command that can safely be prescribed for arbitrary files, codecs, FFmpeg builds, or current YouTube ingestion settings. Build the output options to match your actual media and the encoder guidance shown for the event in Studio; do not paste a guessed command and assume it fits.

- Check each input’s codecs, stream arrangement, time base, and duration information before deciding whether stream copy or re-encoding is suitable.
- Use the event’s current server URL and key, and verify that the output protocol and encoding settings match the current Studio guidance.
- Keep the key private. Avoid saving it in a publicly accessible script or posting logs that expose it.
- If the playlist must repeat, configure looping as an FFmpeg input behavior and verify the option’s placement against documentation for your FFmpeg version. The concat playlist syntax alone does not establish a YouTube-specific loop command.
5. Rehearse and go live
- Before the scheduled event, test the exact playlist, files, FFmpeg build, output settings, network connection, and stream key with a private or otherwise suitable test event.
- At the scheduled time, start FFmpeg. Starting or scheduling the YouTube event does not launch the encoder automatically.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming stream preview to appear. Then click Go live to start the viewer-facing broadcast, as YouTube’s instructions specify.
- Keep an eye on the preview and encoder output during the run, particularly at file transitions and playlist wraparound if looping.
Recurring events: when to reuse a stream
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch, from a liveStream, the settings and delivery resource used by the encoder. In the API workflow, one stream configuration can be reused for events at different times; only one event using that arrangement can be live at a time. Separate stream resources may suit shows that can overlap. This is API-level context, not a requirement to use the API for a Studio-scheduled stream. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.
Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg rejects the playlist or a path: Check that
ffconcat version 1.0is the first line, the file directives are correctly quoted, paths resolve as intended, and filenames meet the default safe-path restrictions. - Files fail to join cleanly or FFmpeg reports stream errors: Compare the input streams, codecs, time bases, and stream arrangement. If they do not match, use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes to consistent output rather than expecting packet-level concatenation to reconcile them.
- There is a pause, gap, or artifact at a transition: Check whether stream lengths differ and whether duration metadata is accurate. A verified
durationoverride may correct bad or missing duration information; do not guess durations. - The scheduled event has no preview: Confirm that FFmpeg is actually running and sending output to the current event’s server URL with the correct stream key and compatible encoder settings. Scheduling alone does not create an incoming feed.
- The preview appears but viewers do not see the broadcast: In Live Control Room, click Go live after the preview is present. A scheduled event and its incoming encoder feed are not the same as taking the broadcast live.
- The setup works once but not for a recurring show: Check whether events overlap. A reused stream configuration in the documented API arrangement supports sequential events, not simultaneous live events on that same arrangement.
