A YouTube Live encoder output also needs video, so the template below pairs the playlist with a looping still image. You’ll need to replace the file paths and YouTube RTMPS stream URL with your own.
What you need before you start
- An FFmpeg build that includes the input formats and encoders used below, including the concat demuxer and
libx264. - Audio files in a compatible format and a visual source, such as a still image.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
This is an encoder command template, not a claim that a particular FFmpeg build or stream has been tested. FFmpeg sends the output to YouTube; you must configure and start the broadcast in Live Control Room as well.

Create the playlist file
In your working directory, create a text file named audio.ffconcat. The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Add one file entry for each track, in the order you want it played:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'music/track-01.mp3'
file 'music/track-02.mp3'
Relative paths are convenient when the playlist and media are organized under the same working directory. For paths containing special characters, use the quoting or escaping rules supported by FFmpeg’s concat script format. Keep the playlist file in a location FFmpeg can read.

Check whether the tracks are compatible
The concat demuxer joins inputs as if their packets were muxed consecutively, adjusting timestamps between files. It expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Files that differ may not join cleanly; inconsistent or inaccurate duration metadata can produce timestamp gaps or audible artifacts. Where appropriate, a duration directive in the concat script can override duration metadata.
If your files have incompatible stream parameters, or you need processing such as fades or loudness normalization, use an FFmpeg processing and re-encoding workflow instead. FFmpeg’s concat filter is the relevant alternative when re-encoding is required; it can handle concatenation as part of the filter graph rather than relying on the demuxer’s matching-input assumptions.

Run FFmpeg with a looping visual and playlist
From a terminal in the directory containing audio.ffconcat and cover.png, use this as a starting-point template:
Recommended Free Tools
ffmpeg
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i cover.png
-re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i audio.ffconcat
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-g 60 -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMPS stream URL>"
Replace cover.png with your visual file and replace the placeholder at the end with the RTMPS stream URL shown for your broadcast in Live Control Room. Don’t publish your stream key or include it in a public command or screenshot. If your setup uses a separate stream-key field or combines the key with the server URL, follow the exact connection details shown in Live Control Room.

What the important options do
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i cover.pngsupplies a still image as a 30 fps video input. The still image is repeated so the output includes video instead of audio alone.-rereads the file input at its native rate, which is useful when feeding a live output.-stream_loop -1loops that input indefinitely. Both are placed before the playlist’s-ibecause they are input options.-f concat -safe 0 -i audio.ffconcatselects the concat demuxer and reads the playlist.-safe 0permits paths beyond the concat demuxer’s safe default; only use playlist entries you trust.-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0explicitly selects video from the first input and audio from the second.-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video;-tune stillimageis suited to a still visual.-pix_fmt yuv420pand-r 30set the output pixel format and frame rate.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizecontrol video rate behavior. The 2500 Kbps bitrate in this example is illustrative, not a universal recommendation.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvuses the RTMP-family output container expected by this RTMPS-style FFmpeg workflow.
Match the output to YouTube Live
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the protocol and settings available for your stream in Live Control Room rather than assuming every ingest option is the same.
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s guidance lists 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps; that figure does not apply to every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Choose the matching recommendation in YouTube’s current bitrate guide and adjust the example’s video rate accordingly. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps among its advanced settings; these are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular result.

Test and monitor the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy the ingest URL and stream key exactly as presented.
- Start FFmpeg with representative tracks and the visual you intend to use. Check its terminal output for input, encoding, or connection errors.
- Confirm in Live Control Room that the stream is arriving and inspect its health messages. Check that both audio and video are present and that transitions between tracks behave acceptably.
- Test before relying on the setup for a scheduled event. During a broadcast, keep an eye on stream health and YouTube’s messages so you can respond if the connection or encoding fails.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg cannot open a track: Check the working directory and each path in
audio.ffconcat. Use a relative path from the location where FFmpeg is run, or correct the quoted/escaped path. - The playlist is not recognized: Make sure
ffconcat version 1.0is the exact first line, with no blank line or other text before it. - Playback has gaps or artifacts at track boundaries: Check that tracks have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and verify their duration metadata. Use a suitable
durationdirective if metadata needs overriding, or switch to a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes. - YouTube receives audio but no video: Confirm the image path opens and retain the explicit maps selecting
0:v:0and1:a:0. An audio playlist alone does not provide a conventional video stream. - The stream fails to connect: Verify the RTMPS URL and key against the current Live Control Room broadcast. Avoid exposing the key and check that your encoder protocol and output match the ingest settings offered there.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Review the selected codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against the relevant YouTube recommendation for your resolution and ingest protocol; also check your available upload bandwidth.
Copyright and YouTube policy considerations
Technical success does not establish that you have permission to stream the recordings. Use music and visuals you own or are licensed to broadcast on YouTube Live, and check the applicable rights for every track and image. A continuous playlist can also raise separate monetization or reused-content questions; meeting encoder requirements does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream.
