You can schedule the YouTube event in YouTube Studio, but the schedule does not send videos from your NAS. A separate encoder must read the media folder and send its audio and video to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and stream key. The simplest local setup is a computer on your network running the encoder while the NAS stores the files.
What you need to make the playlist go live
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s current requirements say the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio because platform requirements can change. YouTube live streaming requirements.
- A scheduled YouTube Live event, which creates the event and its watch page.
- An encoder that can access the NAS files and send a continuous feed to YouTube.
- A reliable network upload connection and a plan for what happens if the encoder, NAS connection, or internet link fails.
A NAS media-player playlist is not automatically a YouTube Live feed. The NAS must either run compatible encoder software itself, or the files must be made available to another computer running an encoder.

Choose where the encoder will run
| Workflow | Best fit | Main trade-off | Verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer runs the encoder; NAS stores the files | Local control, existing hardware, scenes or overlays | The computer and network must remain available | NAS permissions, codec compatibility, playlist order and looping, scheduling, and restart behavior |
| NAS runs encoder software | Only when the exact NAS model supports the required software | Model, CPU, transcoding ability, and package or container support vary | Current model documentation, codecs, unattended process supervision, and upload capacity |
| Cloud prerecorded-stream service | Avoiding an always-on home encoder | Media is uploaded to an external service; features and terms vary | Playlist limits, scheduling controls, YouTube integration, retention, pricing, and service terms |
| YouTube Premiere | A prerecorded video that does not need a live feed | It is a different format and audience experience | Whether live playback and live chat are actually necessary |
For the local setup, a computer that can read the NAS share and stay on for the full stream is the most straightforward design. OBS can suit productions that need scenes and operator controls; a file-oriented encoder such as FFmpeg may suit a repeatable file pipeline. Exact playlist commands and behavior depend on the software and files, so test the complete setup rather than assuming that a NAS player or a particular encoder will loop and recover automatically.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSchedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Manage > Schedule Stream.
- Set the event details and schedule. The event page and reminder options help viewers find the stream, but scheduling alone does not provide the video feed.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s connection settings. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s address and password for the stream. See YouTube’s encoder guide and stream settings.
- Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. In Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS URL and use it with the stream key in your encoder. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted RTMP option; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview. Check both picture and sound, then use the scheduled-event controls to go live when ready.
YouTube also supports HLS for compatible encoder and codec configurations. It is not required for ordinary RTMPS streaming. If you deliberately choose HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; HLS also has higher latency. Consult YouTube’s HLS instructions before configuring it.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can automate aspects of starting and ending an event, but they do not replace the encoder process that supplies the feed.
Make the NAS playlist available to the encoder
- Create or identify the folder containing the videos on the NAS, and make sure the encoder host can access it over your network.
- Give the account running the encoder permission to read every required file. If the NAS share is mounted only after sign-in, configure and test how it becomes available after a computer restart.
- Choose the sequence deliberately. Confirm the encoder’s file order and whether playback repeats, ends after the final file, or needs a separate looping configuration.
- Check that the encoder accepts the media’s codecs and formats without an unexpected conversion or playback failure. The exact supported formats depend on the encoder and its configuration.
- Keep the host, NAS, and network available for the intended duration. A scheduled YouTube page cannot continue receiving media if the encoder stops or loses access to the files.
Synology DSM 7.2 Video Station documents NAS media management, playlists, and playback to browsers or devices; it also states that Video Station is unavailable in DSM 7.2.2. QNAP Video Station documents video playlists and streaming to local-network media devices. Those player features do not establish that either product can publish a media-folder playlist as YouTube Live. Check current support for your exact model and software version: Synology Video Station specifications and QNAP Video Station tutorial.

Synology Surveillance Station’s documented YouTube Live Broadcast workflow selects a camera feed and uses an RTMP path and key; it is not evidence of a folder-playlist streaming feature. The documentation notes H.264 support in that camera-broadcast context: Synology Live Broadcast.
Test the full schedule before depending on it
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Its streaming tips also advise checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming event access through channel and watch pages and on mobile, checking local archives, and monitoring audio and video quality.

- Run a private or unlisted test and confirm the stream appears in the correct event.
- Verify the NAS share is mounted, the encoder account can read the files, and playback begins in the expected order.
- Let the playlist reach its end once. Confirm whether it loops or stops, and decide whether that behavior matches your schedule.
- Listen for audio problems and inspect the preview for a frozen, black, or missing picture.
- Test the scheduled-event handoff: encoder feed, preview, and the action that makes the event live.
- If unattended operation matters, simulate an encoder restart or network interruption and see what actually resumes. Recovery behavior is specific to your setup.
Copyright, reused content, and channel responsibility
Having a video file on your NAS does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music and other material embedded in videos. A playlist made from popular recordings can still lead to a copyright claim, block, or other channel consequences. Review YouTube’s current policies for the content and rights situation before scheduling; do not treat a successful technical test as permission to broadcast.
Separately, eligibility for monetization is not guaranteed just because a stream is continuous or prerecorded. Reused-content decisions and monetization review are distinct from the mechanics of connecting an encoder. Make sure your channel and programming comply with the current YouTube rules that apply to your account and content.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled page exists, but no preview appears | The encoder is not sending, or its destination details are wrong | Confirm encoder status, stream URL, stream key, and that the selected event is the intended one |
| Encoder starts but cannot open a video | The NAS share is unavailable, permissions are missing, or the file format is unsupported | Open the same file from the encoder host using the same account; check share access and encoder format support |
| Only the first playlist item plays | The encoder is treating the input as a single file, or playlist sequencing is not configured as expected | Check playlist configuration and test order and end-of-list behavior before the event |
| Stream ends when the final file finishes | The playlist does not repeat, or the encoder is configured to stop at end of input | Verify the intended loop behavior in the encoder; do not assume NAS playlist playback implies live-stream looping |
| Video or audio is intermittent | NAS access, host performance, or network upload may be unstable | Monitor the encoder and preview, confirm the host can sustain playback, and test the network path under the actual setup |
| Stream does not resume after a disconnect | The encoder or NAS mount did not restart, or the event needs manual attention | Reproduce the interruption in a test and configure or operate recovery according to the specific software and service behavior |
| Camera broadcast works, but folder media does not | The camera feature and a media-folder encoder are different workflows | Use an encoder path designed to read files; camera broadcast documentation does not establish playlist support |
