To keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, you still need a continuously running encoder or playout system. First decide whether you want to schedule separate live events or change the video playing inside one continuous broadcast: those are different jobs, and a minute-based Apps Script trigger is not a precise playlist-switching clock.
What Sheets and Apps Script can—and cannot—schedule
YouTube treats a live event and its incoming video feed as separate resources. A liveBroadcast represents a distinct event and YouTube video. A liveStream carries the audio-video feed to YouTube and defines how that feed is transmitted. Each broadcast is associated with a stream.

That distinction determines what this setup can do. A spreadsheet can hold event dates, titles, privacy settings, and other schedule data. Apps Script can read that data and make authorized requests to YouTube’s Live Streaming API to create or update broadcast resources and change their states. Neither the spreadsheet nor the script supplies the video feed.
- Scheduling events: Create distinct upcoming YouTube broadcasts, associate them with a stream, and manage their metadata or state.
- Running a continuous feed: An encoder or playout system must send audio and video to YouTube continuously.
- Switching playlist items: Changing the content inside a continuous broadcast requires playout software or another system that can change the outgoing feed. The API workflow described here does not provide a ready-made method for Sheets to switch playlist items at exact times.
YouTube documents reusing one stream for different broadcasts at different times, and says one stream can be bound to as many as three broadcasts. It also describes a continuous 24/7 feed with a separate interview broadcast made live on the same stream. That is a resource arrangement—not evidence that Sheets or Apps Script can create or operate the continuous feed.

Choose the right setup for your goal
For separate scheduled events
Use Sheets as the schedule and Apps Script to automate broadcast administration. This suits operators with recurring events or many rows of event metadata who are comfortable setting up API authorization, maintaining a script, and handling errors.
For a playlist that must change during one 24/7 broadcast
Use a playout system that can send a continuous feed and control when items change. Apps Script can provide schedule data or trigger related administrative work, but its time-driven triggers have timing variance and should not be treated as frame-accurate playback control.
For a small number of events
YouTube Studio is the simpler manual route. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a new scheduled stream or reuse prior settings, then set its privacy, stream key, and event details. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers may choose “Notify me.”

Plan the spreadsheet and automation
Use one row per broadcast event
A practical schedule tab can include columns for an internal event ID, title, scheduled start time, privacy status, stream identifier, processing status, YouTube broadcast ID, and last error. The event ID gives your script a stable way to recognize a row after it has already been processed. Keep the schedule separate from any playlist or playout instructions: an event row describes a YouTube broadcast, while a playlist item describes what the encoder plays.
Validate rows before making API requests
Have the script read a bounded rectangular range from the schedule tab; Apps Script’s Spreadsheet service returns selected range values as a two-dimensional array. Before creating or updating anything, check that required cells are present, the scheduled time is valid, the privacy value is one your workflow supports, and the row has not already been completed. Log rejected rows with a reason so a typo does not silently become a missing event.
Make processing safe to repeat
Triggers and API calls can fail independently. Store the YouTube resource IDs and the last successful step on each row. On a retry, look for an existing resource before creating another one, and resume from the last incomplete step. Record errors with the row ID and time, and provide a manual recovery path for events that need attention. Do not rely on a script execution remaining active as a permanent scheduler.

Create and connect YouTube broadcast resources
The YouTube Live Streaming API workflow separates event creation from feed creation. Before automating it, configure an authorized Google Cloud project and API access for the account that manages the YouTube channel. Confirm the project can access the intended channel and test with a private or unlisted event before using a public schedule.

- Create the broadcast. Call
liveBroadcasts.insertwith the event title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Save the returned broadcast ID against the spreadsheet row. - Create or select a stream. Create a
liveStreamresource with a title and CDN transmission settings, including ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. Save its ID and encoder connection details securely. If you intend to reuse a stream, check its existing bindings before attempting to bind another event. - Bind the resources. Call
liveBroadcasts.bindto associate the scheduled broadcast with the selected stream. A broadcast and a stream are not interchangeable IDs. - Prepare and test the feed. Configure the encoder or playout system with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. If you want a testing phase, YouTube’s broadcast guidance recommends enabling the monitor stream and disabling auto-start. Confirm that the incoming feed is healthy before transitioning the event.
- Transition the broadcast when appropriate. Use
liveBroadcasts.transitionto move the event into testing or live state. You can also list upcoming broadcasts to reconcile the spreadsheet with YouTube’s current resources.
YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop as an option for simplifying operation: when enabled, YouTube starts after feed transmission begins and ends about a minute after transmission stops. Choose that behavior deliberately. It does not make Apps Script a video encoder, and it changes how the event responds to the feed.
Broadcast metadata can be updated, but scheduled start and end times have state constraints. Build time changes into the workflow before the broadcast reaches a state that restricts them; do not assume every field can be edited at every stage.

Use Apps Script triggers with realistic timing
Installable time-driven triggers can run as often as every minute, but that does not mean they fire at the exact minute selected. Google documents that trigger timing can be randomized: a recurring 9 a.m. trigger, for example, may be assigned a time within the following hour and then continue at that timing. That is unsuitable for switching a video at a precise playlist boundary.
- Installable triggers run as the account that created them, even when another spreadsheet editor changes the schedule.
- Script executions and API requests do not themselves cause installable triggers to run.
- Use triggers to check for due administrative work, not to keep a live feed alive or promise exact playout timing.
- Design for batching, retries, idempotency, and error logging rather than a permanently running script.
Google’s current Apps Script quota documentation lists different daily trigger-runtime and URL Fetch allowances for consumer and Workspace accounts, a six-minute maximum for an individual script execution, and a cap on triggers per user per script. Limits can change without notice, so check the current quota page for the account type you will use before setting a polling frequency or estimating capacity.

A stream key is a credential used by the encoder along with YouTube’s server URL. Keep it out of public spreadsheets, logs, screenshots, and shared documents. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a key in Live Control Room; if it is reset, update the encoder or playout system with the new key or the feed will no longer reach YouTube.

For scheduled events, review the privacy setting, title, start time, and notification experience in YouTube Studio. A scheduled stream may be shown as upcoming to subscribers, who can opt into “Notify me.” An API-created event should still be checked in the channel’s Live Control Room so you can confirm how it appears and that the intended feed is connected.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous feed, verify the current YouTube guidance and consider how your event duration and archive behavior affect viewers and your channel workflow; platform policies can change.
Common problems and fixes
- The script runs but no video appears: The script manages spreadsheet data or YouTube resources; it does not transmit video. Start and verify the encoder or playout feed, and check its server URL and stream key.
- A broadcast exists but is not connected to the expected feed: Confirm the broadcast ID and stream ID in the row, then check that
liveBroadcasts.bindcompleted successfully for that pair. - A scheduled time was missed or an event was created late: Do not treat a time-driven trigger as a precise clock. Check the trigger’s actual timing, inspect the row’s processing status and error log, and reconcile against upcoming broadcasts before retrying.
- Retries create duplicate events: Persist the broadcast ID and processing state after each successful step. Before inserting a new broadcast, check whether the row already has a corresponding resource.
- The encoder stops connecting after a key change: Replace the old key in the encoder with the current key from Live Control Room, then confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
- A time or metadata update is rejected: Check the broadcast’s current state and the field-specific update constraints. Some scheduled time changes are restricted after state transitions.
- The script exceeds limits or stops partway through: Reduce work per execution, batch rows, save progress, and resume safely. Check the current Apps Script quotas for your account rather than assuming limits are fixed.
