Yes. Many smart plugs let you schedule an outlet to switch on or off at selected times, often on chosen days of the week. You usually set this up in the plug maker’s app; the available controls and what happens when Wi-Fi drops vary by model.
What a smart-plug schedule can do
A schedule automates power to the outlet: for example, it can switch a lamp on at a set time and off later. The plug controls the outlet’s power, not the appliance’s own settings. A connected device may not start merely because power has been restored; for instance, TP-Link says most TVs enter standby after power is cut and may need to be turned on manually (TP-Link support).

Controls differ among models. TP-Link lists schedules and countdown timers for the Tapo P105 (Tapo P105 product page), while Feit Electric documents schedules and timers for its indoor Wi-Fi wall plug (Feit Electric product page). These are feature examples, not a ranking or independent test.

- Schedule: Use this for a recurring action at specific times and on selected days, such as turning a light on every weekday evening. Emporia’s instructions describe choosing days, times, and an on/off action (Emporia: Smart Plug Schedules and Timers).
- Countdown timer: Use this to switch the plug after a duration, such as turning it off after a set interval. Timer behavior can depend on the app; Emporia says its Timer Mode requires the app to remain running, unlike its schedules, which are stored on the plug.
How to set up a schedule
- Open the smart plug’s manufacturer app and select the plug.
- Open its schedule or automation control. The label and location vary by app.
- Choose the days and times, then select whether the plug should turn on or off at each scheduled event.
- Save the schedule and check that the app shows it as enabled. If the model supports sunrise or sunset triggers, you may be able to use one instead of a fixed clock time.
Scheduling does not inherently require voice-assistant support: manufacturers document app-based scheduling independently. Alexa Routines are another possible automation route for compatible setups; Amazon describes routines triggered by time of day and other conditions (Amazon Alexa Routines help).

Will the schedule work if Wi-Fi goes out?
There is no universal answer. Emporia says its smart-plug schedules are stored on the plug and continue during temporary Wi-Fi loss. Its countdown Timer Mode, however, requires the app to remain running. Do not assume another plug behaves the same way: check the exact model’s documentation for whether schedules run locally, need a network connection, or depend on an app or cloud service.
Check appliance compatibility and safety before scheduling
A smart plug switches electrical power, so suitability depends on both the plug’s rating and the connected device. Follow the manual for the exact plug and appliance, and check these points before relying on an automation:

- Electrical load: Keep the connected load within the plug’s stated current and wattage limits. TP-Link says the combined draw of devices controlled by its plugs must stay within the rated limits; it also advises against connecting a power strip or extension cord to a smart plug (TP-Link support).
- Dangerous or critical equipment: Amazon says its Smart Plug is not intended for medical or life-support equipment and warns against using it where inaccurate timing, accidental switching, or continuous unsupervised operation could be dangerous. Its safety documentation gives stoves and heaters as examples. This is Amazon-specific guidance; consult the safety information for the plug you own (Amazon Smart Plug safety information).
- Connection method: Amazon instructs users to plug its Smart Plug directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Follow the corresponding manufacturer’s instructions for other models.
- Location and fit: Confirm the plug is rated for its intended location, and check its dimensions and outlet layout so it does not block a neighboring socket. Indoor models should not be treated as outdoor-rated.
What to compare when choosing a scheduled plug
Check the exact regional model rather than relying on a product family name. A model’s features, electrical limits, and compatibility can differ by version or market.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Schedule controls | Verify that you can select the days, times, and on/off actions you need; check whether sunrise or sunset triggers are offered. |
| Timer and offline behavior | Find out whether countdown timers and recurring schedules work differently, and whether schedules continue without Wi-Fi or an active app. |
| Phone and smart-home compatibility | Confirm support for your phone, Wi-Fi setup, and any ecosystem you plan to use. For example, TP-Link Australia lists Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings compatibility for its Kasa KP105 and notes a secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi requirement for remote control (TP-Link Australia: Kasa KP105). |
| Electrical and environmental rating | Match the plug’s current and wattage limits to the load, and confirm that its location rating suits where you will use it. |
| Size and outlet access | Check the plug’s dimensions and whether it leaves an adjacent outlet usable. |
Manufacturer specifications establish listed features, not comparative reliability or energy savings. No quantified savings or convenience figure is established here, so treat a schedule as a control feature rather than a guaranteed way to reduce electricity use.
