Turn it on in your phone’s network settings, check which SIM is selected if you use more than one, and keep an eye on usage and roaming terms so you can avoid unexpected charges.
Turn on mobile data
The setting may be labeled Mobile Data or Cellular Data, depending on the phone. With cellular data disabled, an iPhone uses Wi-Fi for internet services such as email, browsing, and notifications. When it is enabled, your carrier’s plan and billing rules apply.

On iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Turn on Cellular Data. The same screen lets you control cellular access for individual apps and, where available, configure data options. Menu labels can vary by iOS version and region. See Apple’s iPhone cellular data settings guide.
On a Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Enable Mobile data and check that the intended SIM is selected for data.
Android menu names and steps vary by phone, operating-system version, and carrier. On the documented Pixel setup, only one SIM at a time can be the default for mobile data. A line used for calls or texts is not necessarily the line selected for internet access. See Google’s Pixel mobile-network instructions.

Check and control data usage
Browsing, social media, maps, music and video streaming, and video calls can all use mobile data. Ofcom notes that HD video can consume data quickly. How much you use depends on what you do and how often you’re away from Wi-Fi, so check your own usage rather than relying on a generic monthly estimate.

Use phone settings and your carrier account
- Review per-app data figures in your phone’s mobile-network or cellular settings. These figures help identify which apps use the most data.
- Check your carrier’s app or account for current-period usage and billing information. Apple says the carrier is the most accurate source for current-period usage.
- On supported Pixel devices, you may be able to set a data warning or limit. On iPhone, you can disable cellular access for individual apps; Low Data Mode can pause automatic updates and background tasks when you are not on Wi-Fi.
Phone counters and carrier billing records may cover different periods or be calculated differently. Use the carrier’s account to confirm billable usage and check how its plan treats overages, reduced speeds, or usage limits.
Estimate the allowance you need
Start with several recent months of carrier usage, then consider whether your routine will change. If you often stream video or make video calls away from Wi-Fi, allow for that use; if most of your activity happens on trusted Wi-Fi, you may need less mobile data. Ofcom’s UK guidance, published August 25, 2026, says packages generally start between 1GB and 10GB per month and suggests these may suit lower-use customers. That describes where packages generally start, not a universal recommendation or estimate of typical consumption.

Check coverage and understand performance
A coverage map is a starting point, not a promise of a particular connection. Check the places that matter to you—such as home, work, your commute, and regular destinations—and ask whether the map describes outdoor, indoor, or in-vehicle service. Buildings, local conditions, network load, device support, and plan terms can all affect the connection you actually get.

Ofcom distinguishes network coverage from performance: a network may be available in an area without delivering the same quality everywhere or at all times. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-reported mobile coverage for outdoor or in-vehicle connectivity, not indoor coverage. Its 3G, 4G, and two 5G map categories are not guarantees of observed speed. The FCC also accepts challenges to coverage based on outdoor or in-vehicle speed tests. This map is U.S.-specific; it should not be treated as a global coverage source. See the FCC’s guide to using the National Broadband Map.

What a 5G indicator does—and does not—tell you
5G is generally a faster network technology than 4G, but a 5G icon alone does not guarantee a faster or more reliable experience. The phone model, carrier, plan, settings, local signal, and conditions at that moment all matter. Check that your handset and plan support the network you expect to use; availability and settings can also depend on device model, region, and carrier.
Choose a mobile plan that fits
Compare plans against your real usage and the places you need service. A large headline allowance can be poor value if the plan costs more than you need or restricts speed, fair use, or travel usage.

- Coverage and performance: Check service where you live, work, commute, and travel—not just a broad coverage claim.
- Allowance and what happens when it runs out: Find the overage charge, speed reduction, or fair-use limit. “Unlimited” may still have terms that affect speed or travel.
- Total cost: Add monthly charges, upfront payments, add-ons, price changes, contract length, and exit costs.
- Roaming: Check whether your destinations are included, what data is covered, any usage caps, and the cost of add-ons.
- Phone and payment structure: If you already own a suitable phone, compare SIM-only plans. Consider prepaid or pay-as-you-go if your usage is light or variable, while checking the unit costs.
Ofcom describes three broad UK plan structures: monthly plans that include a phone, SIM-only plans, and pay-as-you-go. It notes that SIM-only can be cheaper for someone who already has a suitable phone, while pay-as-you-go can avoid a long contract but may cost more per unit. These are UK consumer comparisons, not universal pricing rules. Ofcom says phone-included monthly plans commonly last 12, 18, or 24 months, with exceptions. Its guide to choosing a mobile package covers allowances, roaming, price changes, total contract cost, and exit costs.
Use mobile data while traveling
Roaming lets your phone connect to a cellular network outside your provider’s own covered area. Whether it is included or costs extra depends on your carrier, plan, destination, and usage. Before leaving, check the carrier’s terms for each destination, including any data allowance, cap, or add-on charge.

Manage data roaming on your phone
Apple advises checking with your carrier before travel. You can turn Data Roaming off to prevent roaming use; if you have arranged a roaming plan, follow the carrier’s instructions for enabling it. On a dual-SIM phone, make sure you are changing the roaming setting for the intended line. See Apple’s guide to mobile data roaming on iPhone and iPad.
Consider a travel eSIM or local SIM
A travel eSIM or local physical SIM/prepaid plan may be an alternative to your home carrier’s roaming service. Before relying on one, confirm that your device supports eSIM if needed, is unlocked when required, and can use the service at your destination. Compare included data, expiry, speed rules, and whether calls and texts are included. A local SIM, eSIM, or prepaid plan can help avoid roaming fees, but other plan or service charges may still apply; the CRTC’s roaming guidance discusses these options for travelers.
Availability figures should be read narrowly. Apple’s May 24, 2024 statement that selected providers offer iPad eSIM data plans in over 190 countries, regions, and territories applies to those selected plans and compatible iPads—not to every eSIM product, phone, provider, or destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot a mobile data connection
If data stops working, work through these checks in order. Menu labels differ across devices and software versions.
- Check the basic controls: Confirm Mobile Data or Cellular Data is on and Airplane Mode is off.
- Verify the data SIM: On a dual-SIM phone, check that the intended line is selected for mobile data.
- Check signal and account status: Move to a location with a stronger signal, then confirm with your carrier that your plan has data remaining, is active, and covers the area.
- If traveling, check roaming terms first: Confirm the relevant line’s roaming permission and your plan’s destination rules before enabling roaming, to avoid unintended charges.
- Refresh the connection if appropriate: Follow your carrier’s instructions. Apple’s travel troubleshooting guidance suggests turning Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and then turning it off when addressing roaming problems.
- Check APN settings only when directed by your carrier: An access point name (APN) is a profile used to reach carrier data services. It is often configured automatically, and incorrect settings can prevent data from working. Get exact values from your carrier rather than copying generic settings. See T-Mobile’s APN explanation.
- Contact your carrier if the problem continues: The carrier can check account status, provisioning, local coverage, and billing records that your phone settings cannot resolve.
When a mobile hotspot makes sense
A portable mobile Wi-Fi hotspot can share a cellular connection with multiple devices, which may be useful when a phone hotspot is unsuitable or you need a separate device. The hotspot itself does not provide cellular service. Before choosing one, check carrier support, network compatibility and bands, whether the device is unlocked, battery needs, and the plan required for connectivity.
