Use OBS’s built-in automatic reconnect for a brief loss of the YouTube connection; schedule OBS to relaunch with --startstreaming if the OBS process itself exits. If YouTube ends the broadcast while OBS is still sending, check the event and stream key in YouTube Studio instead. These are three different failures, and a scheduled restart only addresses a stopped local process—it will not repair a bad connection or invalid key.
Identify what disconnected before scheduling anything
- OBS is open, but its output disconnected: Configure OBS automatic reconnect. It retries the stream output while OBS remains running.
- OBS closed or crashed: Use an operating-system scheduler or supervisor to relaunch OBS with its documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter. - OBS is running, but the YouTube broadcast ended: Check the event, stream status, stream key, and auto-start/auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s event controls do not relaunch a crashed encoder.
A reconnect, a process restart, and a YouTube event setting operate at different levels. Trying to solve all three with a timed restart can create overlapping OBS instances without fixing the underlying fault.

Set OBS to reconnect when its output drops
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find the automatic reconnect controls. OBS’s official overview lists automatic reconnect among Advanced settings; its API reference describes a retry count and starting wait, with the retry time doubling on each retry. The exact controls and labels can vary by OBS version, so check the installed version’s interface rather than relying on a fixed sequence of retry values.
This is a retry mechanism for an OBS process that is still running. It is not a scheduled reboot, and it does not guarantee that the stream will recover. If OBS itself exits, automatic reconnect cannot relaunch it.

Schedule OBS to relaunch after it exits
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for automated starts, including use with scheduled tasks. The scheduler should launch the intended OBS installation, use the correct profile and scene collection, and avoid starting a second instance while OBS is already open.
- Confirm the normal setup first. Open OBS manually and check that the correct profile, scene, YouTube destination, and stream key are selected. Start and stop a test stream if practical.
- Find the OBS executable folder. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation calls out the working directory requirement: when using a scheduled task, set its working directory to the folder containing the OBS executable.
- Configure your operating system’s scheduler or supervisor. Set it to launch OBS with
--startstreamingafter the process has exited or at the recovery interval you intend to use. The exact scheduler fields differ by operating system and version; use the operating system’s current documentation for its task settings. - Handle an existing process deliberately. Configure and test what happens if OBS is still running when the task fires. Do not assume the scheduler will safely attach to, replace, or close an existing OBS process.
- Test the failure path. Verify that the task launches the correct OBS installation with the expected profile and YouTube destination, and that it does not create overlapping instances. Test this before depending on unattended operation.
A timed task can relaunch a process, but a fixed schedule is not the same as monitoring. If the scheduler simply opens OBS at a set time, it may do so even when the original stream is healthy. Choose a process-aware supervisor or configure task conditions appropriate to your operating system, and confirm the behavior in a controlled test.

Check YouTube Live Control Room when the event ends
- In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live event in Live Control Room and check whether the event is still active and what stream status it reports.
- Confirm the stream URL and stream key configured in OBS match the event. YouTube explains: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
- Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices. Those settings can start or stop streaming from the encoder; they are not a method for restarting an encoder process that has crashed.
- If you suspect the key is compromised, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube and then update the encoder with the replacement key.
Troubleshoot recurring disconnects instead of restarting repeatedly
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide frames dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That is a useful diagnostic direction, not proof that every interruption has the same cause.
- Bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity: Lower the OBS bitrate and test stability. A connection’s usable upload capacity can vary; a bitrate that once worked may no longer be reliable.
- Unstable route or ingest server: Try another available ingest server and check whether the problem changes.
- Network configuration or equipment: Check the modem, router, and network path. Faulty equipment can interrupt the stream.
- Security or VPN software: Check whether firewall, security, or VPN settings are disrupting OBS’s connection.
- Persistent ISP-side issue: If local checks do not resolve recurring problems, consult the internet service provider.
- Invalid key, ended event, or source problem: Verify the YouTube event and encoder settings, and confirm OBS has the intended media source and playlist. Reopening OBS cannot correct a bad key or missing source file.
Use a scheduled relaunch for a stopped process, not as a substitute for fixing an unreliable network path, a persistent service outage, or a configuration or content error.

Choose local automation or cloud playback based on the job
OBS plus a scheduler makes sense when you need local production control or the stream depends on a live capture setup. A hosted loop can suit prerecorded videos when you do not need a local real-time production machine; compare what each option actually recovers, what it depends on, and what its provider says about interruptions.
| Approach | What it handles | Main dependency or limit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries a dropped output while OBS is running. | Does not relaunch OBS after it closes; recovery is not guaranteed. |
| Operating-system scheduler or supervisor | Can launch OBS with --startstreaming after a process exit, if configured and tested. |
Still depends on the local computer, power, network, OBS configuration, and YouTube event/key. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Manages the event and its auto-start/auto-stop behavior. | Does not document restarting a failed local encoder process. |
| StreamNeo | Runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. | For prerecorded video loops to YouTube; it does not stream a camera feed. |
| Other hosted loop services | Vendors describe cloud playback and recovery features. | Those are vendor claims, not independently verified performance results; check the provider’s stated limits. |
For services or methods to keep a prerecorded YouTube loop running, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, streams uploaded media as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS automatic reconnect restart OBS after a crash?
No. It retries a stream output while OBS is still running; a scheduler or supervisor is needed to relaunch an exited process.
