Then schedule the job on a host that will be available at the times you choose. The retailer, polling cadence, alert condition, timezone, and hosting environment are configurable; no single API or scheduler fits every setup.
Choose a permitted price source and alert rule
Start by deciding where the price comes from. Prefer a retailer-supported API or another stable source whose access conditions permit your intended use. Availability, account eligibility, request limits, and acceptable cadence vary by provider. If you plan to read a public web page, check that source’s terms and anti-abuse rules; do not bypass access controls.

Amazon’s Associates help page states an initial Product Advertising API allowance of one request per second per account, but that is an account- and API-specific allowance, not a recommended polling interval for every monitor or a guarantee of access. Choose the alert condition before storing history. A target-price rule needs a threshold; a decrease or percentage-change rule also needs a previous observation. Keep the rule in its own function so it can be tested independently from fetching and message delivery. If the condition remains true across runs, track the last alert state or last alerted price to avoid sending the same notification every time.

Separate configuration from the monitoring logic
Keep the product identifier or URL, schedule, threshold, and Discord webhook configuration outside the core functions. Store secrets in environment variables or a secret store, not in source control, and never include the webhook URL in logs. A webhook URL grants the ability to post to its channel, so treat it as a credential.
Represent prices as decimal currency values rather than binary floating-point numbers, validate the currency and expected precision, and record the time of each observation. A fetched value is useful only if it is clear which product, currency, and observation time it represents.

Fetch and validate the price
Implement a provider-specific fetch_price() function. Its job is to make the permitted request, validate the response, and return a normalized price—or raise a clear error. Do not treat a failed request, unexpected response, or missing field as a price of zero.
- Set an explicit connect/read timeout. The Requests documentation recommends timeouts for nearly all production requests; without one, a request does not time out automatically. See Requests: Timeouts.
- Check the HTTP response status and handle connection failures and response errors separately. Requests documents the request interface and error handling at Requests: Quickstart.
- Validate that the response matches the provider’s expected shape before extracting a value. Normalize decimal precision and currency, and log the product identifier and observation timestamp without exposing credentials.
Make the alert decision independently
A small should_alert(current, previous, threshold) function makes the rule easier to reason about. For example, a target rule can alert when current <= threshold; a change rule can compare the current value with the prior stored observation. Decide whether equality should trigger, whether increases matter, and what counts as a meaningful absolute or percentage change.

Persist only the state required by your rule. A target-only rule may not need a full price history, while a decrease rule needs at least a previous observation. Persisting a last-alert marker can suppress repeated alerts while the condition remains true. Decide how a restart affects that state so restarting the process does not unexpectedly reset alert behavior.
Post the alert with a Discord incoming webhook
For one-way notifications to a channel, a Discord incoming webhook is a direct option: it is an HTTP endpoint associated with a channel. Discord lists monitoring alerts and scheduled reports among webhook use cases. See Discord Webhook Resource.

Implement send_discord_alert() as a POST to the configured webhook, with a concise message containing the item, observed price, currency, rule that triggered, and observation time. Treat a successful HTTP response as delivery acknowledgement. Handle missing or invalid configuration as an actionable error rather than retrying indefinitely.
Do not hard-code Discord rate limits. Discord’s developer documentation says, “Because rate limits depend on a variety of factors and are subject to change, rate limits should not be hard coded into your app.” Inspect response headers and, for HTTP 429, honor the supplied Retry-After header or retry_after field. A webhook URL returning HTTP 404 is invalid or unavailable; do not keep retrying it. See Discord Rate Limits.

Schedule the job and choose where it runs
The scheduler determines when the monitor runs; the host determines whether it can run at all. An in-process scheduler such as APScheduler works only while its Python process is running. APScheduler’s current guide distinguishes tasks, triggers, schedules, jobs, data stores, and executors, and documents interval, cron, one-time, and calendar-interval scheduling. Use an interval trigger for a recurring elapsed-time cadence, or a cron-style schedule for wall-clock times. For wall-clock schedules, set the timezone explicitly and decide what should happen across daylight-saving changes. APScheduler’s trigger and scheduling guidance is at its user guide and its timezone details are at scheduler configuration.
If the scheduler uses a persistent data store, that can preserve schedule state across restarts, but it does not provide process supervision, guarantee that missed checks will be delivered, or handle provider-side retries for you. Decide how the host starts the process again after failure and how the next run behaves after downtime.
Run once before enabling recurrence
- Set the provider configuration, product identifier, threshold or change rule, and webhook secret outside the source code.
- Run the fetch and decision path once manually. Confirm that a valid observation has the expected currency, precision, and timestamp, and that failed fetches produce errors rather than price alerts.
- Test message delivery with a controlled condition and verify that the intended Discord channel receives the message. Keep the webhook secret out of terminal captures and logs.
- Enable the selected scheduler only after the one-time run works. Check the process or service logs for run start, successful observation, decision outcome, and delivery status.
- After a restart or outage, confirm that the scheduler is running and review whether the next check and saved alert state match your intended behavior.
Wrap each run in failure boundaries: a price-source failure should be logged and should not create a fabricated price alert; a Discord delivery failure should be distinguishable from a fetch failure. Redact secrets while retaining enough context to diagnose the product, run time, and failure category.
