Shut down the PC, switch off and unplug its power supply, then inspect the RTX 4090 before reconnecting power. Do not power the card if you see a cracked or bent PCB, damaged PCIe contacts, a broken power connector or cable, melted parts, or other obvious damage. A visual inspection can reveal problems, but neither a clean appearance nor a successful boot proves that hidden impact damage is absent.
Make the PC safe before handling the card
- Shut down the computer, switch off the power supply, and unplug the system from the wall. Let it sit before opening the case or touching internal components.
- If there is smoke, a burning smell, melted plastic, or exposed conductors, do not reconnect power. Arrange a professional inspection.
- Handle the card by its edges, avoiding its circuitry and PCIe connector, as NVIDIA advises in its graphics-card handling guidance. Avoid unnecessary disassembly; removing the cooler can cause further damage and may complicate support.
Inspect the card for impact damage
Use good lighting and look over the card without forcing parts or taking it apart. These are warning signs, not a complete diagnostic: MSI says its examples are assessed by a service center, and ASUS notes its damage examples are not exhaustive.

PCB, backplate, and shroud
Look for a cracked or split circuit board, a board that appears bowed, a deformed backplate, a shifted cooler shroud, or screws that look loose. MSI lists a deformed backplate and cracked PCB among examples of physical damage. Do not try to bend a part back into place.

Fans
Check for broken blades, a visibly tilted fan, or debris obstructing movement. Do not force a fan to turn. Broken fan blades are among MSI’s examples of mechanical damage.

PCIe edge connector
Inspect the gold contacts and the board around them for cracks, bent areas, missing or deeply scratched plating, or exposed material beneath the plating. ASUS identifies PCB breaks affecting internal traces and damaged gold plating on the gold fingers—including exposed underlying material—as structural damage from external force. Do not insert a card with visibly damaged contacts into the motherboard.
Power socket, adapter, and cable
Check the card’s power socket, the plug, and the cable for cracks, distortion, looseness, exposed wire, discoloration, melted plastic, or signs that a cable was pulled at an angle. NVIDIA’s reference RTX 4090 calls for either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the supplied adapter or a 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable; partner-card requirements can differ. NVIDIA’s November 18, 2022 connector update said its findings suggested a common issue was a connector not fully plugged into the card. That was guidance about connector seating, not evidence that an impact caused a connector problem. If the socket, plug, adapter, or cable appears damaged, do not energize the card.
Decide whether to reinstall or seek service
If you find obvious structural, contact, or power-connection damage, leave the card unpowered and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. The same applies if the card will not seat normally, a fan rubs, or the PC develops new artifacts, black screens, crashes, an unusual electrical smell, or other abnormal behavior. Avoid repeated power cycles to see whether a fault goes away.
If a minor bump left no visible damage or new symptoms, a cautious reinstallation may be reasonable for someone comfortable working inside a PC. That is not a guarantee of safety: the official guidance cited here does not provide a validated post-impact pass/fail test, and a successful boot or benchmark cannot rule out hidden damage. Stop if anything seems abnormal and seek a professional assessment.

Find the right support channel
Identify the exact card model before contacting support. NVIDIA handles support for Founders Edition cards; partner-made GeForce cards are supported by their add-in-board partner. Check the seller, purchase date, region, and applicable warranty terms. NVIDIA’s warranty terms list damage related to misuse or negligence among exclusions; partner terms and repair options vary. A visual sign of damage does not, by itself, settle warranty eligibility.
Use RTX 4090 specifications only for identification
NVIDIA lists reference-card dimensions of 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and three slots (61 mm) thick, with 450 W total graphics power and 850 W required system power. Partner models may differ. These specifications can help identify the reference card and plan clearance or power requirements; they do not indicate whether a dropped card remains safe.
NVIDIA’s 2022 connector investigation reported about 50 cases globally. That historical figure refers to cases NVIDIA said it knew about during that connector investigation—not drop-related damage, and not an estimate of all affected cards.
