To schedule a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast, create a scheduled event in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder using the event’s stream URL and stream key, then start the encoder and confirm its preview before selecting Go live. Scheduling the event alone does not send your video to YouTube. If you want viewers to watch an uploaded video together at a set time without an encoder-driven broadcast, use a YouTube Premiere instead.
Before you schedule: check channel eligibility
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event rather than on broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming activation requirements.

Schedule the Live event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live > Manage, then choose Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings from an earlier stream. Add the event details, scheduled time, and audience-facing information, then save or schedule it.
- Copy and share the scheduled watch-page URL so viewers can find the event. Scheduled streams may appear in subscriber feeds, where viewers can select Notify me to receive a reminder as the event approaches.
YouTube’s stream setup instructions are at Schedule a live stream; its guidance for stream visibility and notifications is at Manage live stream settings.

A scheduled Live event is a destination, not a playback system. An encoder sends the prerecorded video to YouTube as a live feed. YouTube describes an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” You can use supported encoder software or hardware; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect.

- In the event’s Live Control Room settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields.
- Load the prerecorded video or playlist in the encoder and check that playback, audio, and any planned overlays are correct. The encoder must remain connected and playing for the event to reach YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event as YouTube recommends, and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview before clicking Go live.
Leave upload-bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends capacity at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Check that the scheduled public page opens from your channel and on mobile; ask a trusted viewer to confirm the watch page and displayed time before completing promotion. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance covers connection preparation.
At broadcast time and when you finish
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed and show it in the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm that the correct prerecorded content is playing and that the event details are right. When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- When the broadcast is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending the feed from the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Tell Indian viewers the time in IST
Put the event time and date in Indian Standard Time (IST) wherever you promote the stream. Before sharing, open the public watch page and double-check the time and date shown to you and, if possible, ask someone in the intended audience to check it too. YouTube says the published-on date displayed on a watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time; a schedule created in a timezone ahead of PST can therefore show a different calendar date there. The exact timezone controls can vary by account, and the available guidance does not establish a single best broadcast hour for Indian viewers. See YouTube’s scheduled video publishing guidance.

Choose between a Live stream and a Premiere
| Option | Best fit | What viewers get | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Live with an encoder | Prerecorded playback that must enter YouTube through a live broadcast pipeline, or a production that needs encoder-based controls and overlays. | A scheduled Live event and its watch page. | You must connect and run an encoder; creating the schedule does not transmit the video. |
| YouTube Premiere | An uploaded video that viewers should watch together at a chosen time without an encoder-driven Live broadcast. | A public watch page in advance, reminders, and chat. YouTube says viewers who set a reminder receive one around 30 minutes before the Premiere and another when it starts. | Premieres do not support Shorts or output above 1080p. YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours ahead to give people worldwide time to see the thumbnail in subscriptions; that is guidance, not a guaranteed audience result. |
YouTube explains the shared-watch experience in its Premiere instructions. A Premiere is not a substitute for a Live encoder workflow when you specifically need a prerecorded video sent as a live broadcast.
Optional dedicated hardware for unattended playback
YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes a PlayToStream capability for scheduled prerecorded-media playback to YouTube Live without a computer. It is an optional specialized hardware route, not a requirement: ordinary supported encoder software is also an option. Check the manufacturer’s current model details and compatibility before buying. Troubleshoot before viewers arrive
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: confirm the encoder is sending to the scheduled event’s stream URL and that its stream key matches. Check that the channel is eligible for livestreaming and that activation has completed.
- The preview is blank or playback is wrong: make sure the encoder is running, the correct file or playlist is loaded, and playback has started. Do not select Go live until the preview shows the intended feed.
- The connection is unstable: check available upload capacity against the stream’s total bitrate and keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the outgoing bitrate if your connection cannot sustain the configured feed.
- Viewers see a confusing date or time: verify the scheduled watch page and state the event time explicitly in IST in your announcements.
- The encoder can send to the channel unexpectedly: treat the stream key as compromised, replace it in YouTube Studio, and update any legitimate encoder using the old key.
