What does the daily cron expression mean?
A standard five-field cron expression is ordered as minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. In 0 0 * * *, both the minute and hour are zero, while each remaining asterisk means every valid value for that field. The result is a run at 00:00 each day.

Midnight is a convenient default, not a requirement. Pick a time that avoids peak application activity and gives operators a practical window to notice failures. The meaning of midnight depends on the scheduler’s configured timezone.

How do schedulers handle overlap and missed runs?
A cron expression does not by itself guarantee that every run starts exactly once, that a failed run is retried, or that a missed run is recovered. These behaviors differ by scheduler and configuration.
Kubernetes CronJob
Kubernetes notes that a CronJob creates Jobs “approximately once per execution time of its schedule.” Design the cleanup so it is safe if scheduling is delayed, a run is missed, or work is attempted again; Kubernetes specifically recommends idempotent Jobs.

The CronJob concurrency policy defaults to Allow, which permits overlapping Jobs. Set Forbid if a new scheduled run should be skipped while a prior Job is still active. Configure startingDeadlineSeconds deliberately to define how late a missed schedule may start. These settings govern scheduling behavior, not application-level retry guarantees.
Linux cron and systemd-cron
Do not assume a missed Linux cron invocation will be caught up after downtime; check the behavior of the installed daemon and host setup. The Debian testing manual for systemd-cron describes persistent timers that can run after boot when an execution was missed, and says generated units log to the journal. Confirm the behavior for the package and version actually installed: systemd.cron(7) manual.

What the schedule does not decide
The scheduler only determines when to start the cleanup. Your cleanup program must independently define which directories it may touch, which files qualify by age or other retention criteria, and what to do when deletion fails.
- Use a narrow, application-specific path scope rather than a broad directory or wildcard.
- Set a retention period that matches the application’s operational, recovery, and compliance needs; no universal number of days is established here.
- Run a dry run or equivalent preview to inspect the exact files selected before enabling deletion.
- Make repeated execution safe, so a rerun does not damage data or fail merely because an eligible file was already removed.
How Kubernetes Job history differs from file retention
Kubernetes CronJob history limits control how many completed Job objects are retained in the cluster; they do not control the uploads or logs your cleanup program deletes. Kubernetes documents defaults of 3 successful Jobs and 1 failed Job for these history limits. Treat those as Kubernetes configuration defaults, not cron-wide settings or file-retention periods.

When choosing among them, consider the timezone controls, overlap policy, catch-up behavior, visibility of logs and failures, and the deployment environment already in use. None of these schedule formats supplies a safe deletion policy on its own.
