Before you start
Open the Google Drive app on your phone or tablet and allow it to use the camera if prompted. Google documents scanning in the mobile app, not the mobile web version. Interface labels can change over time; Google’s instructions reviewed on October 7, 2026, do not specify minimum operating-system or Drive app versions. Scan a document on Android

Open the Google Drive app and tap Camera at the bottom right.

Point the camera at the page. Google says a blue outline shows the area that will be cropped. Capture the page; capture can be set to Manual or Auto.

Review the scan. Crop or rotate it, apply a color filter or grayscale, or clean up marks such as stains and fingers. For a multi-page document, add pages. Retake or delete a page if needed.

Tap Done. Enter a filename or use a suggested title.

Choose .pdf for a PDF, or .jpg if you want an image instead. If you want to save somewhere other than the default folder, use Location to choose a Drive folder.

Tap Save.
Google also documents a Drive scan widget for Android: add it from your device’s widgets, place it on the Home screen, select an account if prompted, and choose the folder for scans. Google Drive Help.
Scan a document on iPhone or iPad

Open the Google Drive app. Tap Add at the bottom right, then Scan. Depending on the app interface, you can also tap the camera or Scan icon.

Frame the page with the camera. Google says the blue outline indicates the crop area. Capture the page using Manual or Auto capture.

Tap Done, enter a filename or use the suggested title, and optionally choose a Drive folder through Location.

Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe the save flow but do not list a PDF/JPG format selector. Google generally describes scans saved through Drive as searchable PDFs; do not expect an Android-style format choice based on the iOS help page. Google Drive Help.

Make a cleaner, more useful scan

Keep the page inside the blue crop outline before capturing, then check the crop in the editor.

Use crop and rotation to straighten the page; choose a filter or grayscale when it makes the text easier to read.

Use the cleanup control for visible marks such as fingers or stains. Review each page before saving, especially in a multi-page scan.

Give the file a recognizable name and select the intended Drive folder using Location before you save.
Are Google Drive scans searchable?
Google says Drive scans can be saved as searchable PDFs. Its reviewed help pages do not provide text-recognition accuracy figures or guarantee that every document will be recognized correctly. For important paperwork, open the saved PDF and check that the pages are legible and that any text you need to search for is recognized as expected. Google Drive Help.
