Deleting a Google Doc normally moves it to Google Drive Trash rather than erasing it immediately. On a computer, choose More > Remove beside the file in Docs, or open it and select File > Move to bin. On Android, tap More > Remove beside the document. To get it back, restore it from Drive Trash before it is permanently deleted. Google says files remain in Trash for 30 days unless you empty it sooner.

Restore a Doc from Google Drive Trash
Google says a file stays in Drive Trash for 30 days, after which it is deleted forever. Emptying Trash manually deletes files sooner. The 30-day period is Google’s stated retention policy, not a guarantee that a file already removed from Trash can be recovered.
On a computer
- Go to drive.google.com and open Trash.
- Right-click the file and choose Restore.
On Android
- Open the Docs app menu and select Trash.
- Tap More beside the document, then choose Restore.
See Google’s instructions for restoring files if you need help locating the current controls.

What changes if you do not own the Doc?
If you remove a document owned by someone else, it disappears from your Drive but remains available to other people who have access. You cannot restore another person’s file yourself; ask the owner to restore it. Google explains this in its Android file-removal guidance.

If you own a shared Doc, permanently deleting it removes collaborators’ access. If they still need the document, transfer ownership to someone else before deleting it, as Google advises in its shared-file guidance.
Files in a shared drive
Shared-drive Trash uses role-based permissions. Google Workspace guidance says restoring a file from shared-drive Trash is available for up to 30 days and requires at least Contributor access. A Manager can permanently delete files in that Trash. See the Google Workspace shared-drive guidance.
If you permanently deleted the Doc
Google’s current file-recovery help says recovery may be possible for files deleted forever, but the guidance cited here does not give detailed eligibility criteria or promise success. Check Google’s current recovery instructions promptly; do not assume support can restore every permanently deleted file.

If the Doc is missing but not in Trash
A document that is hard to find may have been moved or become inaccessible rather than deleted. Check these possibilities:
- Make sure Drive is open under the Google Account where you originally accessed the document.
- Check Drive Trash.
- Review the Drive activity panel for recent changes.
- If the document is shared, ask its owner whether its permissions or parent folder changed.
Google’s missing-file guidance covers ways to look for files that have disappeared from Drive.
