To keep a useful history of website screenshots, capture the same routes in a consistent browser environment, review visual changes against approved baselines, and retain both versioned baselines and run-specific evidence for as long as your audit needs. Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions and repository-managed snapshots; CI artifacts can preserve reports and failure screenshots temporarily, but they expire. For longer history, keep approved baselines in version control or export selected run evidence to an archive governed by your own retention policy.
Choose what “screenshot history” means for your audit
There are two different records to preserve: a reference image representing an approved state, and the captures produced by individual test runs. They answer different questions. A versioned baseline shows what the team accepted at a point in the code history; run evidence helps explain what a particular CI job rendered and why a comparison failed.

- Visual regression history: keep reviewed reference snapshots with the code in version control. A baseline change can then be reviewed alongside the relevant implementation change.
- Run diagnostics: save reports, screenshots, and traces as CI artifacts so a failed run can be inspected after its job finishes.
- Long-term audit archive: if you need evidence beyond CI artifact expiration, preserve approved baselines or export chosen artifacts to a separately managed archive. The storage mechanism and its access and retention controls are an operational choice, not a requirement imposed by Playwright or GitHub.
These mechanisms do not, by themselves, establish that a record meets any legal or compliance requirement. Confirm retention, access, and integrity needs with the policy that applies to your organization.

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on an initial run and compares later captures with them. Store the generated snapshots in the test repository when practical, and review any baseline update rather than accepting it automatically. An intentional redesign and an accidental visual regression can both produce a changed image.

Keep the capture inputs stable
Use a consistent browser project, viewport, and CI environment for baseline generation and audit runs. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its snapshot names include browser/platform or the configured project name, which helps distinguish capture contexts.
Choose routes and states that matter to the audit, and use a clear naming convention that identifies the route, state, viewport, and browser project. If pages contain genuinely volatile regions, use Playwright’s screenshot styling options to suppress those regions rather than allowing changing timestamps, rotating content, or similar noise to dominate the comparison.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('pricing page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/pricing');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('pricing-page.png', {

});
Replace the example URL with a route you control or are authorized to capture. On the first run, Playwright creates the expected snapshot; subsequent runs compare against it. Review and commit approved snapshot changes with the related code or design change.
Save CI reports and screenshots after a run
CI artifacts are useful for preserving run-specific output after a workflow completes. GitHub defines an artifact as a file or collection of files produced during a workflow run. Configure the workflow to upload the Playwright report, screenshots, or other relevant output; Playwright’s CI guide demonstrates uploading a report with a 30-day retention setting. That is an example configuration, not a universal retention recommendation.
Set retention to match the diagnostic need
GitHub documents a 90-day default for artifact and log retention. Its documented configurable range is 1–90 days for public repositories and 1–400 days for private repositories, and an organization policy can impose a lower maximum. Treat these as GitHub product settings, not promises of indefinite storage. Confirm the effective repository and organization policy before relying on an artifact as part of an audit trail.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
For a history that must outlast those limits, keep the reviewed snapshots in version control or export selected reports and screenshots to a separate archive with an explicit retention and access policy. Avoid assuming that a CI artifact alone is a permanent record.
Review a visual difference and diagnose it
When a comparison fails, inspect the expected image, actual capture, and difference image before changing the baseline. Determine whether the difference reflects an intended product change, an unstable page region, or a change in rendering environment. Playwright Trace Viewer can help examine expected, actual, and difference images alongside test context, including the actions and page state around the capture.
- Open the failing test report and identify the route, browser project, and viewport that produced the mismatch.
- Compare the expected, actual, and diff views to locate the changed region.
- Use the trace and test logs to understand the page state and actions leading to the screenshot.
- Fix the cause if the difference is accidental or environmental; update the baseline only after an intentional visual change has been reviewed.
If a team wants hosted visual review beyond repository-managed snapshots, Percy documents an integration that routes Playwright visual snapshots into a hosted review flow. Evaluate its suitability and terms independently; the available material here does not establish current pricing or commercial terms.

Choose the right retention and review model
| Need | Practical approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Reviewable reference history | Commit approved Playwright snapshots with the code. | Baseline updates require deliberate review; a stored baseline is not proof that a change was correct. |
| Short-term CI diagnosis | Upload Playwright reports and relevant screenshots as workflow artifacts. | GitHub artifact retention expires and can be capped by organization policy. |
| Longer-lived run evidence | Export selected artifacts to a separately governed archive. | Choose and validate the archive’s access and retention controls against your needs. |
| Hosted visual review | Consider Percy’s documented Playwright integration. | Assess hosted-service fit and program terms separately. |
Troubleshoot common screenshot-history problems
Many unrelated tests show image diffs
Check whether baseline generation and CI use different operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, or headless modes. Align the environment before reviewing individual page changes.
The same page changes between runs
Look for volatile content and timing differences, then suppress only the genuinely unstable regions with screenshot styling. Also verify that the test reaches the same page state before capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe historical image or report is no longer available
The artifact may have expired under the repository’s retention settings or an organization-level limit. Adjust retention within the applicable GitHub limits for future runs, and preserve evidence outside transient artifacts when the audit horizon is longer.

A baseline update appears alongside a failing change
Do not treat snapshot generation as approval. Inspect the image diff and test context, establish whether the new appearance is intended, then commit the baseline change only through the same review process used for the related code or design.
A screenshot comparison is hard to interpret
Check that names distinguish route, viewport, and browser project; then inspect the expected, actual, and diff images. Use Trace Viewer and test output to recover the actions and state around capture.

For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its screenshot API and website screenshot service can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
