How to Save Water at Home During a Drought

Start with local drought restrictions, then fix leaks and reduce indoor and outdoor water use. Equipment upgrades are optional, not the first step.

To save water at home during a drought, first check your water utility’s current restrictions, then fix leaks, cut everyday indoor use and reduce outdoor watering wherever rules allow. Local limits take priority over general conservation advice: some communities restrict or prohibit outdoor watering to keep water available for critical needs.

How to save water at home during a drought: check local rules first

Look at your water bill or your utility’s website for the current drought stage, watering schedule, and any limits on household use. Rules differ by location and may change as conditions worsen or improve. Check before using sprinklers, hand-watering gardens, washing vehicles, or filling pools; do not assume a general water-saving tip is permitted locally.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains why restrictions matter: “Follow the rules: If your community has taken the step of restricting water use, it’s to ensure that water is available for critical community needs such as firefighting, health care facilities, and local businesses.” EPA, When in Drought, Use Your WaterSense.

Check your household water use on the bill, too. A sudden increase can be a clue that water is escaping through a leak.

Find and fix leaks

Inspect faucets, toilets, visible pipes, showerheads, and the irrigation system for drips, running water, or damp areas. Pay particular attention to sprinkler heads and connections: an underground or outdoor leak can waste water without being obvious indoors. EPA includes leak detection and repair in its WaterSense water-saving tips and drought guidance.

Repair a leak promptly or arrange for a plumber or irrigation professional to do so. If your bill has risen unexpectedly and you cannot locate the cause, contact your utility; it may be able to help you interpret usage or identify next steps.

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or lathering your hands.
  • Keep showers shorter rather than letting water run while you are not using it.
  • Wait until you have a full load before running the dishwasher or washing machine.

Cut outdoor watering within the rules

Outdoor use can be a significant part of household water demand. The EPA estimates that nearly 9 billion of the 29 billion gallons U.S. households use each day go to outdoor household use—about 30%; the share can reach 70% in hot summer months or dry climates. The EPA page does not specify a publication year, and the proportion varies with season and climate. See EPA’s Start Saving water-use information.

Those figures are context, not a reason to override local watering limits. If outdoor watering is restricted or prohibited, follow the restriction. If watering is allowed, use less than you normally would and follow the local schedule.

  • Reduce lawn irrigation rather than watering on an automatic routine that ignores drought conditions.
  • Water efficiently when permitted, using delivery and timing suited to your landscape and local rules. EPA’s drought advice covers outdoor conservation.
  • Consider plants suited to your area’s climate and rainfall when replacing or adding landscaping; local extension or utility guidance can help identify appropriate choices.
  • Check sprinkler heads and connections for leaks, and avoid watering pavement or other areas that do not need it.

Reuse suitable water for plants

Where local rules and household conditions allow, collect clean water that would otherwise go down the drain—for example, water run while waiting for a shower to warm—and use it on container plants or flower beds. EPA includes this practice in its drought guidance. Use water only where it is suitable for the plants and intended purpose; do not treat captured water as drinking water.

Consider efficient fixtures when replacing one

Buying new equipment is not the first step: check restrictions, repair leaks, and change habits first. If you are already replacing a showerhead or faucet, look for the WaterSense label. The EPA says WaterSense-labeled fixtures are independently certified to use at least 20% less water than standard models. Details are available from EPA’s WaterSense drought guidance.

Rebates, eligible products, and availability vary by utility and location. Ask your water provider whether it currently offers a rebate before buying. An irrigation controller is relevant only if your home has in-ground irrigation and local rules permit irrigation; it does not supersede a watering restriction.
