Save a Puppeteer screenshot to a file
This complete example launches a browser, opens a page, saves a PNG, and closes the browser even if an error occurs:

}The path determines where the image is written. A relative path such as capture.png is resolved from the process’s current working directory. The screenshot call is asynchronous, so use await before using the resulting file or continuing work that depends on it. Without a path, Puppeteer returns image data in memory instead of saving a file.
Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP
Puppeteer supports all three formats. Match the filename extension to the format you need; set type as well when you want the choice to be explicit rather than inferred from the path.

The 85 values above are examples, not recommendations. Choose a quality setting based on the needs of your use case and inspect the output. The documentation does not establish comparative file-size or fidelity rankings among the formats.
The current Puppeteer API documentation labels these details as version 25.12.0 and was accessed on October 3, 2026. Screenshot options can change between versions, so consult the ScreenshotOptions API reference for the version you use.

Get screenshot data in memory
If another part of your program will upload, transform, or otherwise handle the image, omit path and use the returned bytes. By default, the return value is a Uint8Array:

Capture a specific element
Use ElementHandle.screenshot() when you need an element rather than the whole page. The official Puppeteer Screenshots guide demonstrates both page and element capture. An element screenshot scrolls the element into view if needed; the call throws if the handle has become detached from the DOM.

Troubleshoot common issues
- The file is not where you expected: A relative
pathuses the process’s current working directory. Use an absolute path or check the working directory. - The output format is not what you intended: Make the extension and
typeagree, such aspath: 'page.webp', type: 'webp'. - Changing
qualitydoes not affect a PNG: Quality applies to supported non-PNG formats, not PNG. Use JPEG or WebP if you need that option. - The element screenshot throws: The element may be detached from the DOM. Query for the current element again, and check that the selector found a match.
- You expected a file but got data: A screenshot without
pathreturns aUint8Arrayby default, or a string withencoding: 'base64'. Provide a path to save directly to disk.
Choose the output for the next step
The practical choice is the format your downstream application accepts: PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Use quality only for JPEG or WebP, and choose a named file path when you want Puppeteer to write the image directly; omit it when your program will consume the returned data. Puppeteer’s documentation describes the supported formats and mechanics, but does not claim one format is always smaller or more faithful than another.
