How to Save Places and Organize Them into Lists in Google Maps

Save places to Google Maps lists, organize them on desktop or mobile, and manage sharing, visibility, limits, and export.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To save a place in Google Maps, open its place card and choose Save, then select a list. Use Saved on desktop or You (or Saved, depending on the app interface) on mobile to create and manage lists. Saved places are private by default; sharing a list lets other people view it or, if invited, collaborate.

Save a place to a list

Sign in to your Google Account first. Google says signing in lets you save and find favorite places across computers, phones, and tablets. Saving a place is different from downloading an offline map area or adding a place to Google Maps.

On a computer

  1. Search for a business, place, or coordinates, or click the location on the map.
  2. Open its place card and select Save.
  3. Choose an existing list, or create one if the option is available.

On Android

  1. Search for a place, tap its marker, or touch and hold a point on the map.
  2. Open the place name or address, then tap Save.
  3. Select the list where you want to keep it.

On iPhone or iPad

Google’s Help instructions direct iPhone and iPad users to save places and manage lists from the Saved area. Open a place’s details, use its save control, and choose a list. Button labels can vary with the app interface.

Create a list

On a computer

  1. Open Saved in Google Maps.
  2. Select New list.
  3. Enter a name; you can also add an icon and description.

On mobile

  1. Open You or Saved, depending on the labels shown in your app.
  2. Choose New list and enter a name and description.
  3. Choose whether the list is private or shared, then save it.

Organize and edit your saved places

Open Saved on desktop or You/Saved on mobile, then open the list you want to change. Available controls vary by platform, but Google’s instructions cover editing a list’s name, description, icon, notes, and places; removing a place; and deleting a list.

On desktop, Google says list changes save automatically. If you only want to declutter the map, hide the list from the main map rather than deleting it; you can show it again later. Hiding a list does not remove its saved places.

Share a list or invite collaborators

Google Maps lists can be shared by link. Depending on the sharing options available, you can let people view a list or invite them to edit it. Review the sharing setting before sending the link: anyone who can view a shared list may see the names and profile photos of people who joined, as well as who added or edited places and notes. Google’s desktop instructions say starred places cannot be shared.

Google states that saved places remain findable only by you unless you create and share a list. This makes a shared list different from simply saving a place to your account.

Know the list and note limits

  • Saved Lists: Google Maps Help says lists are limited to 3,000 entries and warns that larger lists may not display properly. The Help page does not state a publication year for this limit.
  • Notes: Google Maps Help’s iOS list instructions specify a maximum of 4,000 characters per note; the page does not state a publication year.

Export saved places

To keep an export of your saved data, use Google Takeout and include Saved in the export. Google’s instructions cover this for desktop and mobile list management.
