XRP’s price is set by buyers and sellers in the markets where it trades. Speculation and changing expectations can influence demand, while actual and expected token supply can influence how traders view the market. Ripple is a company associated with XRP, but it is not XRP: XRP is the native currency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), the network on which it operates.
What determines XRP’s price?
Like other traded assets, XRP gets its market price from transactions between buyers and sellers. The SEC-filed XRP registration statement describes supply and demand as the mechanism that determines XRP’s value and identifies speculation as a substantial influence. That explains the pricing mechanism, not where the price will go next.

Demand, expectations and speculation
Traders may respond to expectations about adoption, regulation, market access, or broader financial conditions. Those expectations can affect willingness to buy or sell, but the available sources do not measure how much any one factor contributes to XRP’s price. News or a company announcement is not, by itself, proof that XRP demand or value will rise.

The amount of XRP available to trade—and expectations about tokens that could become available—can shape market perceptions. But a supply schedule does not mechanically set a price: the effect depends on what holders do and how buyers respond.

Broader market conditions and risk
SEC-filed disclosures note that XRP may correlate with other asset classes and may not maintain its value over any time horizon. This is a warning about volatility and potential loss, not evidence that XRP always follows Bitcoin or any other asset. These factors offer no reliable price target or forecast.
Ripple, XRP and the XRP Ledger are different
Ripple is a company; XRP is the digital asset; the XRP Ledger is the network. XRP Ledger documentation calls XRP the network’s native currency. The company’s holdings, distributions and business activity can matter to market expectations, but Ripple and XRP are not interchangeable—and Ripple’s activity does not guarantee a change in XRP’s price. According to that overview, the XRP Ledger’s founders gifted 80 billion XRP to Ripple, and Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into a series of escrows. These are historical allocation figures reported by the XRPL documentation, not a current count of XRP in circulation or a verified measure of Ripple’s present holdings.

What Ripple’s XRP escrow does—and does not mean
The XRPL overview describes escrow as a way to make supply more predictable. Ripple’s Q4 2024 XRP Markets Report distinguishes XRP held by Ripple from XRP in escrow and says Ripple cannot access escrowed XRP until it is released monthly.

- Escrowed XRP: tokens subject to the time-based release arrangement; Ripple says it cannot access them before release.
- Released XRP: tokens for which the escrow restriction has ended. Release does not establish that they were sold.
- Ripple-held or sold XRP: these are distinct from escrowed tokens. The cited report does not support treating every release as a sale or assuming that the released amount equals XRP entering the wider market.
Escrow can affect expectations about potential supply, but it does not guarantee a stable price, cap the price, or prove that any particular amount was sold. The sources cited here do not establish a current circulating-supply figure, Ripple-controlled balance, or quantity of escrowed XRP that entered broader markets.

Legal developments can influence views about XRP’s trading or market access, but broad claims about its legal status need care. An SEC filing attachment summarizing the 2023 district court decision describes different treatment for certain transaction types, including programmatic exchange sales and some institutional sales. It also says secondary-market sales were not before the court.
