DIRECTV Community Support says recordings are encrypted to the DVR that recorded them. If you need a physical copy, a DVD or VCR recorder may be able to record the receiver’s playback in real time, depending on your equipment.
What “download” means for a DIRECTV DVR recording
There are three different goals that can sound like downloading:

- Export a file: Save a recording to a computer or USB drive so it can be played independently. DIRECTV’s cited support materials do not describe a supported export method. A DIRECTV Community Support response says recordings are encrypted to the DVR that recorded them and cannot be transferred to an external drive. Read the external-drive response.
- Watch on another device: Use DIRECTV’s app or online access to stream recordings where supported. That provides access to playback, not an exported file.
- Make a physical copy: Record the receiver’s playback with a DVD or VCR recorder. This takes the same time as watching the program and depends on compatible connections.
How to watch recordings in the DIRECTV app or online
DIRECTV’s recording support page says the DVR playlist can be accessed online at directv.com and in the DIRECTV App. For recordings on the receiver, press List or open Menu > My Library. These are playlist and playback access routes, not file-download instructions. See DIRECTV’s recording instructions.

DIRECTV says compatible devices can stream live or recorded TV with an internet connection. Device and operating-system support, account access, network conditions, and content availability affect what you can watch. DIRECTV notes that streaming on certain third-party devices may be limited to home Wi-Fi; its support page describes mobile streaming in the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Check the current compatible-device and streaming guidance for your device.

An older DIRECTV onboarding guide describes finding recordings in My Library > DVR Recordings while the mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the receiver. It also says the app may stream a Video On Demand version of a recording where available. Because the guide is older, use it as historical guidance and follow the app’s current menus and support information if they differ. View the DIRECTV app onboarding guide.
Can you copy a recording to a DVD or VCR?
A DIRECTV Community Support answer describes connecting the receiver or DVR to a DVD/VCR recorder, selecting the receiver as the recorder’s input, playing the recording, and recording that playback. It is a real-time copy of the output, not a transfer or unlock of the original DVR file. Read the community answer about online access and recording playback.

- Check the receiver’s available outputs and the recorder’s inputs. The community answer does not establish which current receiver models or connectors support this setup.
- Connect the receiver’s output to a compatible input on the DVD/VCR recorder, following the equipment manuals.
- Select that input on the recorder, then start playback of the DVR program and begin recording.
- Let the program play through; the recording takes the program’s playback time.
Do not assume a USB drive or capture device can extract the DVR’s native recording. The cited support guidance does not provide a method for bypassing the encryption or content protection.

If offline viewing is the real goal
The cited DIRECTV support pages and older onboarding guide document app access and streaming, but do not establish that DVR recordings can be saved in the app for offline playback. Check the current app features for your device and account before relying on offline access. If you specifically need an independent computer or USB file, DIRECTV’s cited support materials do not describe a supported way to create one from the DVR recording.
