Can You Install Microsoft Project on a Mac? Your Options Explained

Project desktop is a Windows app, not a native Mac download. Mac users can check access to the browser-based Planner transition or consider Windows virtualization for desktop features.

You can’t install the Microsoft Project desktop app directly on macOS: Microsoft’s Project Standard 2024 listing specifies Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2019. On a Mac, use the browser-based Project experience transitioning to Microsoft Planner, if your account has access and its features meet your needs, or consider running Windows in a virtual machine for desktop Project. The latter is a community-described workaround, not a Microsoft compatibility guarantee.

Is Microsoft Project available as a Mac app?

The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish a native macOS version of the Project desktop app. Microsoft’s Project Standard 2024 listing specifies Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2019. Microsoft Community Moderator guidance likewise describes the desktop client as Windows-only.

Microsoft’s general Office installation guidance for Mac covers Office apps and mentions standalone apps in its general discussion, but it does not establish that Project desktop has a Mac edition. For Project, rely on the product-specific operating-system requirements.

Which Project option can you use on a Mac?

Option Where it runs What to know
Project desktop Windows PC, or potentially Windows in a virtual machine on a Mac No native Mac support is established in the cited sources; the Project Standard 2024 listing specifies Windows. A virtual-machine setup is a possible workaround, not guaranteed compatibility.
Project for the web / Microsoft Planner transition Web browser Microsoft says Project for the web capabilities are transitioning to Planner. Access and features depend on your account, entitlement, and rollout.
Project Online Web service Microsoft states a retirement date of September 30, 2026. That date has passed; do not treat Project Online as a current service choice.

Microsoft’s transition information says most Project for the web capabilities continue under Microsoft Planner as the experience rolls out to organizations. Check the work or school account you plan to use rather than assuming every account or plan includes it.

How to use Project’s browser-based option on a Mac

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft work or school account you expect to use.
  2. Check whether the account provides access to the current Planner experience that includes the Project capabilities you need. The product name and rollout can vary by organization.
  3. Try your actual workflow in the browser before relying on it for a project. Consult Microsoft’s feature comparison to check the capabilities available in the web offering versus desktop.

The feature comparison distinguishes task dependencies in the web product from desktop/Project Online-group capabilities such as baselines and critical path. It also distinguishes resource management, financial management, and program and portfolio management. If any of those are essential to your workflow, verify the current offering rather than assuming the browser route is a full desktop replacement.

How to run Project desktop on a Mac with Windows

A Microsoft Community Moderator described using a virtual machine running Windows on a Mac as a way to use Project desktop, naming Parallels and VMware as examples. This December 7, 2024 community guidance is not an official Microsoft compatibility guarantee. Before choosing this route, verify that the virtualization software supports your Mac’s processor and macOS version, that your intended Windows version is supported in that configuration, that your Project edition supports that Windows version, and that you have a valid Project license.

For example, Microsoft’s Project Standard 2024 listing specifies Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2019, but it does not certify any particular virtual-machine setup. Do not assume that an installation that works on a Windows PC will work identically on a Mac virtual machine.

How to download Project inside Windows

Once you have an eligible Windows environment, follow Microsoft’s current Project installation instructions inside Windows. The steps depend on whether you own a perpetual edition or have a subscription:

  • Perpetual edition: Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase. If it is your first setup and you have a product key, redeem it as instructed so the purchase is linked to that account.
  • Project Online Professional or Premium subscription: The subscription must have a Project license assigned to your account. If Project does not appear under Apps & devices, check with your organization’s administrator about your assigned license.

The installation flow is for Windows Project. Signing in and running the downloaded installer on macOS does not install the desktop app natively.

Is Project Online still an option?

No. Microsoft Learn’s Project Online retirement notice gives September 30, 2026, as the retirement date; that date has passed as of October 7, 2026. This notice concerns the Project Online service. It does not say that the standalone Project desktop application has been retired.
