Do three things while you are still connected: download a map area that contains your entire route, add eligible tickets to your phone’s wallet, and make local copies of essential documents. Then open every saved item once, check storage and update status, and confirm that the apps can display the content without a connection.
Offline features are not identical everywhere. Apple Maps and Google Maps support different travel modes, wallet passes depend on the issuer, and cloud files may only be cached rather than truly copied to the device. The checks below are designed for a planned trip, a likely outage, or any period when mobile data and Wi‑Fi may disappear.

Prepare the device before downloading anything
Use the phone, tablet or computer you will actually carry. Apple says offline maps do not sync between devices, so downloading on one iPhone does not make the map available on another. Give the device a stable connection, connect it to power, and leave enough free storage for maps and document copies.
- Update the operating system and map, wallet and document apps while online.
- Record your route, destination, travel dates and the names of every passenger before you start saving items.
- Keep the screen-lock passcode available. Wallet passes and documents may be protected by the device lock.
- Do not rely on a cloud listing, thumbnail or online preview as proof that a file is stored locally.
A portable phone power bank is optional, but useful when the phone must remain on for a long journey. It is a convenience rather than a substitute for downloading and checking the content.

Save an offline map that covers the whole journey
An offline map is a bounded download, not a copy of the entire mapping service. Select an area large enough to include every road, transfer point and destination you may need. If any part of the planned route falls outside the saved region, navigation can fail when the connection is gone.
iPhone: Apple Maps
- Open Maps while connected.
- Tap your profile picture or initials.
- Choose Offline Maps, then Add Offline Map.
- Search for the destination or choose your current location.
- Resize the selection so it covers the entire route, including approach roads and the return or alternate destination you may need.
- Tap Download and wait for the download indicator to finish.
You can also press and hold a location on the map to place a pin, then download the area around it. Apple displays the anticipated file size before the download; reducing the selected area reduces storage use. Offline maps are not available in every country or region, and individual offline features can vary by location. Apple’s iPhone guide, accessed October 13, 2026, says a supported saved area can provide place details and turn-by-turn driving, walking, cycling and transit directions when disconnected.
Check Apple’s update and storage controls
In Maps > your profile > Offline Maps, review each saved region, its size and its update settings. Apple’s support article published December 29, 2025, describes Automatic Updates as enabled by default on the reviewed support page and provides Optimize Storage, which can remove unused offline maps. Do not assume a map remains permanently available: check that the region is still listed on the device you will carry and that it has not been removed to free space.

Android: Google Maps
- Open Google Maps while connected.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map.
- Move and resize the rectangle until it contains the complete route and destination area.
- Tap Download and wait until the area appears in your downloaded-map list.
Another method is to search for a city or destination, open its place panel and use the download option shown there. Google displays an estimated file size before saving. The route still has to fit inside the downloaded rectangle; saving only the city center is not enough if you will drive in from outside it.

What Google Maps cannot do offline
Google’s current Android help page says offline walking, bicycling and transit directions are unavailable. Offline driving can work within the saved area, but it does not provide live traffic information or alternate routes. Plan any transit transfers, walking legs and likely detours while connected, and save a larger driving area than the minimum route if you may need to change course.
Map expiration and final map check
Google Maps maps can expire. Google says the app attempts an automatic update when an offline map will expire within 15 days and the device is connected to Wi‑Fi, but you should not wait for that attempt before a trip. Open Google Maps > profile picture > Offline maps, check the downloaded area and its update or expiration status, and update it manually while online. Google’s product blog has described automatic updating as occurring about once every two weeks when enabled; the current Help instructions are the better reference for the expiration behavior.

Save flight and event tickets to a wallet
Wallet storage is controlled by the airline, event organizer or ticketing provider. Save a pass only after the provider offers an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet option; a paper ticket, a generic QR image and a wallet pass do not necessarily behave the same way offline.
Apple Wallet
- While connected, open the airline or event provider’s app, email or webpage.
- Choose Add to Apple Wallet when that option is offered.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation and wait for the pass to appear in Wallet.
- Open Wallet and select the pass.
- Check the passenger or attendee name, date, flight or event, seat and any displayed barcode.
Apple documents presenting eligible boarding passes and tickets from an iPhone or Apple Watch. If the provider does not supply an Apple Wallet pass, keep the provider’s supported alternative locally as well, such as a downloaded file or image that your device can open without a network.

Google Wallet
- Open the provider’s app, email or webpage while online.
- Tap Add to Google Wallet if the provider participates.
- Complete the setup and wait for the pass to be listed in Google Wallet.
- Open the pass before leaving and verify the name, date, event or flight and barcode.
Google Wallet supports participating providers rather than every issuer. Google says adding a boarding pass from a screenshot requires the Wallet app and an active internet connection during setup. A screenshot therefore cannot be treated as a universal offline enrollment method: create it before service disappears, then open the resulting pass to confirm that it is actually in Wallet.
Ticket checks that prevent surprises
- Open each pass on the device you will present at the gate or entrance; do not check only on a computer.
- Confirm that a changing detail, such as a boarding time, seat or gate, has been refreshed while online.
- If another traveler’s ticket is on your phone, verify whose pass is selected before handing over the screen.
- Keep the original provider email or booking reference available locally when the provider permits it, but do not assume an email link will load without service.
Make important documents genuinely local
A document is ready for an outage only when the device can open it from local storage without contacting the cloud. A file that appears in a cloud folder may still be streamed on demand. For passports, visas, insurance details, prescriptions, reservations and emergency contacts, save a copy in an app or folder that works in airplane mode and test it.
Google Drive on a computer: mirrored versus streamed files
Google Drive for desktop has two relevant configurations. Mirrored files and folders are copied to the computer and remain available offline. Streamed files stay primarily in the cloud; individual items must be marked Available offline. Google says streamed offline files are accessible only while the Drive app is running, whereas mirrored files can be opened offline even when the app is not running. Both methods use local disk space for the items stored offline.

| Streamed files | In the Drive location, select the file or folder and mark it Available offline; wait for the offline indicator. | The selected item is cached locally and can be opened while offline. | Drive must be running for streamed offline files to remain accessible. |
Google’s Drive Help page documents these desktop controls; it does not establish one universal offline procedure for every mobile platform or document app. On a phone or tablet, use that app’s current “download,” “save to device” or equivalent command, then verify the file from local storage rather than from a cloud-only list.

A practical local-document workflow
- Create a short folder such as
Trip documentsin device storage or in a document app that explicitly supports offline files. - Save the documents in a format the device can open without a cloud connection. A PDF is often practical for fixed pages; retain the original format when a recipient requires it.
- Include the document name, issuing organization, relevant date and an expiry date in the filename so the correct copy is easy to identify.
- For identity documents or medical information, use the device’s normal lock and encrypted storage. Avoid leaving sensitive files in an unprotected public folder.
- Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi‑Fi and mobile data, open every file from the local folder, and page through it.
- Return online and replace any outdated copy, then repeat the offline test.
Do not delete the cloud original merely because a local copy exists. The local file is a continuity measure; the issuing organization’s current version remains authoritative when a connection returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run one complete offline test before departure
Testing each item separately catches a different failure from testing the phone as a whole. Perform the test on the device you will carry, after all downloads and updates are complete.
- Check available storage in the device settings. Leave headroom for camera photos, app caches and map updates.
- Open the saved map list and confirm the area covers the full route, not only the final destination.
- With connectivity disabled, open the map and search for the destination. Test the travel mode you intend to use; do not infer that Google’s offline driving support also covers walking or transit.
- Open every Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass and verify the expected passenger or attendee, date, event or flight and barcode.
- Open each essential document from its offline location. A cloud folder that shows a filename is not sufficient.
- If using streamed Google Drive files on a computer, confirm they are marked Available offline and leave Drive running during the test. If they are mirrored, test opening them with Drive closed.
- Restart the device, keep connectivity disabled, and open the map, passes and documents again. This reveals items that were only held in a temporary app session.
- Charge the device fully and pack any optional power bank, cable and adapter.
Fix the common failure modes
The route extends beyond the downloaded map
Reconnect, edit the offline-map area and enlarge it until the complete route fits. Include border crossings, airport approaches, ferry terminals and likely detours. Then download the revised area and repeat the disconnected route search.

The map download is missing or expired
Open the offline-map list rather than relying on a saved search. If the area is absent, download it again. If Google shows an expiration warning, update it on Wi‑Fi before leaving. On iPhone, check that Optimize Storage has not removed an unused region and that the map was downloaded on the current device.

Navigation offers no walking, cycling or transit route
This is an expected Google Maps limitation offline, not necessarily a failed download. While online, write down transfer points and walking directions, or use a platform and region that document those offline modes. For driving, carry a larger saved area because live traffic and alternate routes are unavailable.
A ticket is not in the wallet
Reconnect and repeat the provider’s official add-to-wallet flow. Check that the issuer participates and that the setup completed; Google’s screenshot-based boarding-pass addition needs internet during setup. If no wallet option exists, save the provider’s permitted local document or image and verify it in airplane mode.
A document opens only after reconnecting
It is still cloud-dependent. In Google Drive streaming mode, mark the item Available offline and keep Drive running; alternatively mirror the folder. In another app, use its explicit local-download command or export a copy to device storage. Test again with all connections disabled.

Check the estimated map size before downloading, reduce overlapping map areas, remove unused offline maps, and move nonessential photos or videos off the device. Keep the documents and tickets that matter for the trip, then retest after freeing space. Apple’s Optimize Storage can remove unused offline maps, so review the list again before departure.
Use this short departure checklist
- Maps: the complete route and destination are inside a finished download; the map is current; storage is sufficient.
- Apple Maps users: the map is on the iPhone being carried, and Automatic Updates and Optimize Storage settings have been reviewed.
- Google Maps users: the area is listed, not near expiration, and the planned travel mode is supported offline.
- Tickets: every eligible pass is visible in the intended wallet, with the correct traveler, date, event or flight and barcode.
- Documents: each vital file opens from local storage with airplane mode enabled.
- Google Drive desktop: streamed files are marked Available offline and Drive will remain running, or the needed folder is mirrored.
- Power: the phone is charged and a cable or optional power bank is packed.
After this check, losing internet should remove live updates and cloud convenience—not the basic map, pass and document access you need to continue.
