Use Matplotlib’s PdfPages to save multiple figures as pages in one PDF. Call pdf.savefig(fig) for each figure, then let a with block close and finalize the file.
Save multiple figures to one PDF
Import PdfPages from Matplotlib’s standard PDF backend, open the output file with it, and save each figure in turn. Passing the figure explicitly makes clear which plot is being added to the document.

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from matplotlib.backends.backend_pdf import PdfPages
with PdfPages("report.pdf") as pdf:
for i in range(3):
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([0, 1, 2], [i, i + 1, i + 2])
ax.set_title(f"Page {i + 1}")
pdf.savefig(fig)
plt.close(fig)
Each call to pdf.savefig(fig) adds that figure as a new page. When the with block ends, the PDF is closed properly, including if an exception occurs inside the block. The Matplotlib multipage PDF gallery uses this pattern and closes each figure after saving it.

Choose which figure to save
PdfPages.savefig accepts a figure; if you omit it, Matplotlib uses the active figure. Explicitly passing fig is useful when creating several figures or saving inside a loop, because the target page is unambiguous. See the PdfPages API reference.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Close figures and the PDF
Close each figure once it is no longer needed, particularly in a loop that creates many pages. This releases figures instead of leaving them open as the script continues. Using with PdfPages(...) handles closing the PDF for you. If you do not use a context manager, call pdf.close() when finished; otherwise the document may not be finalized correctly. The API reference and gallery example document these approaches.
Alternative: use plt.savefig
You can also pass the PdfPages object to plt.savefig, but specify the PDF format explicitly:

with PdfPages("report.pdf") as pdf:
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([0, 1], [0, 1])
plt.savefig(pdf, format="pdf")
plt.close(fig)
The Matplotlib how-to FAQ documents this alternative as well as calling pdf.savefig() directly. For most code, pdf.savefig(fig) is the more explicit option and does not require the extra format="pdf" argument.
Add document metadata or page notes
Metadata is optional. Supply a dictionary to the PdfPages constructor or modify the information dictionary with pdf.infodict(). Documented keys include Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate, and ModDate. The API also allows certain predefined values to be removed by setting them to None.

To add a note to a page, call pdf.attach_note(text) immediately before the corresponding pdf.savefig(...); the note is attached to the page saved next. You can check how many pages have been written with pdf.get_pagecount(). These options are described in the backend PDF API and shown in the multipage gallery.
When to use the PGF backend
For the ordinary PDF workflow, use matplotlib.backends.backend_pdf.PdfPages. Matplotlib also provides matplotlib.backends.backend_pgf.PdfPages for a PGF-based, LaTeX-oriented workflow. The gallery notes that the PGF version does not support attach_note; choose it when you specifically need that workflow rather than for a standard multipage PDF.
