How to Save Files to an SD Card on a Samsung Galaxy Tablet

Move files to a compatible microSD card with My Files, or set supported apps such as Camera and Samsung Internet to save there. Availability varies by tablet and software.

You can save some new photos and downloads directly to a microSD card and move existing files there with My Files—but an SD card does not become universal storage for every app or type of data. First check that your exact Galaxy tablet has a card slot and supports the card’s capacity; support and menus vary by model and software.

Check your tablet and card before you start

Not every Samsung Galaxy tablet supports a microSD card, and the maximum supported capacity differs by model. Check your tablet’s model-specific specifications before buying or inserting a card. Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guide explains that compatibility and supported capacity depend on the device.

Insert the card as described in the instructions for your tablet. If you are unsure where the card slot is or how to open it, use the hardware guide for your exact model rather than forcing the tray or card.

Move existing files with My Files

Use Samsung’s My Files app to copy or move supported files such as documents, pictures, videos, and audio to the card. Samsung’s file-management guide notes that available screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and carrier.

  1. Open My Files and find the file or folder you want to transfer.
  2. Select the item, then choose Copy or Move from the available actions. Copy leaves the original in place; move transfers it.
  3. Choose SD card as the destination.
  4. Open the destination folder, or create one if the option is available, and confirm the copy or move.

Keep the card inserted when you want to access files stored on it. A file moved to the card may no longer be available to an app that expects it in its original internal-storage location.

Set the camera to save new photos to the card

If your tablet has a card and the option is available, open Camera, tap Settings, find Storage location, and select SD card. Samsung documents this app-specific setting in its guide to using an SD card. The setting changes where the camera saves its photos; it does not redirect all tablet storage.

In Samsung Internet, open Settings > Sites and downloads > Save downloaded files to, then choose SD card if the choice appears. This affects downloads handled by Samsung Internet, not downloads from every app. Menu names and availability can differ with the tablet model and software.

What an SD card cannot necessarily store

There is no single setting that makes every photo, document, application, and app-data file save to a card. Some apps let you choose a card as their save location; others do not. Samsung cautions that not all apps support SD-card use, and moving a supported app does not necessarily move all of its data off internal storage. Encrypted music and other purchases also cannot be moved to external storage, according to Samsung’s guide to moving photos, videos, or music.

A January 2024 Samsung Community discussion about a Galaxy Tab A8 running Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1 illustrates the version-specific nature of “default storage” advice: the accepted answer describes adoptable internal storage as unsupported in that context and points to per-app settings instead. Treat that as guidance for that particular discussion, not a guarantee about every Galaxy tablet or software version. Samsung also warns that adoptable storage can reduce performance, so formatting a card as internal storage is not a routine way to make it a universal default.

If the tablet does not recognize the card

  • Check that the card is fully and correctly inserted, following the instructions for your tablet.
  • Confirm that the tablet model supports microSD and that the card is within its supported capacity.
  • Test the card in another compatible device to help determine whether the problem is with the card or the tablet.
  • If troubleshooting leads you to format the card, first back up important files elsewhere. Formatting can erase the card’s contents; Samsung advises backing up before formatting in its troubleshooting guidance.

If My Files or an app shows different options from those listed here, the setting may not be available on your model or software version. Samsung’s instructions are model-dependent, and the labels can change between versions.
