To make an Android phone last longer during music playback, keep the screen off, lower its brightness, and use downloaded tracks instead of streaming when practical. If the battery is already low, try Battery Saver—but check that your music app continues playing reliably, since its restrictions can affect apps and connectivity.
Set up the screen before you start listening
Music usually keeps playing without the display, so avoid leaving the screen on to control playback. Lower brightness and shorten the screen timeout before starting your session; both reduce avoidable display use. Google recommends lowering brightness and letting the screen turn off sooner in its general Android battery guidance. On Pixel phones, the screen-timeout control is under Settings > Display & touch; labels and locations can differ on other brands and Android versions.

Choose between streaming and downloaded music
| Playback mode | Connection during listening | Preparation | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Usually needs a continuing network connection to retrieve tracks. | Little or none for tracks you can access online. | You want live discovery or tracks you have not downloaded. |
| Offline playback | Downloaded tracks can play without continuing network access. | Download the music ahead of time using your app. | You are listening to familiar or prepared tracks and want to avoid ongoing network use. |
Google lists streaming music among activities that can drain battery when you are trying to stretch a low charge. Downloading tracks ahead of time is a practical way to reduce reliance on a continuing connection, but Google’s guidance does not quantify how much battery this saves. The result will depend on the phone, app, signal, and listening conditions. See Google’s Pixel low-battery guidance.
Use Battery Saver with a playback check
Battery Saver may help when charge is low, but it can limit background activity, connectivity, or app behavior. That can matter if a music app needs to keep working in the background or maintain a network connection. Enable the mode using your phone’s own battery settings or quick settings, then lock the screen and listen long enough to confirm playback stays reliable. Do not assume every app or Android model handles the restrictions the same way. Google describes these trade-offs in its Android battery advice and Pixel Battery Saver guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- The world's first Snapdragon 680 portable HiFi player JM21: The Qualcomm Snapdragon 680, built on a 6nm advanced process, features an 8-core Kryo 265 architecture with a clock speed of up to 2.4GHz. This results in a significant performance boost, lower power consumption, and smooth, seamless operation.
- Custom Android 13 open-source system: The deeply customized Android 13 open-source system offers smooth and seamless performance, allowing effortless control. It provides the freedom to install streaming apps like Spotify, Apple Music, and other applications as desired.
- Dual flagship DACs, CS43198, with a powerful 700mW output drive: The JM21 features a fully balanced audio architecture, powered by two flagship Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs paired with two high-performance SGM8262 operational amplifiers. Through audiophile-grade circuit design and tuning, the JM21 delivers a balanced output power of up to 700mW + 700mW, offering powerful drive and exceptional sound quality. It effortlessly powers headphones or large over-ear models with ease and authority.
- At just 13mm thin and weighing only 156g, the device offers a comfortable one-handed grip that completely frees your pinky. With an impressive 12.5 hours of battery life, it ensures uninterrupted listening wherever you go, easily lasting from morning to night. Every listening session is a pleasurable experience without worrying about battery life.
- he self-developed DAPS digital audio purification system, coupled with a fifth-generation FPGA and custom dual femtosecond crystal oscillators, ensures that both local playback on third-party music apps like FiiO Music and Apple Music, as well as output to an external USB DAC, maintain the original audio sampling rate. This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.
Check whether the music app is using more battery than expected
If playback stops, stutters, or the phone loses charge unusually quickly, check battery use by app. Pixel users can review app battery use in Settings and leave the recommended optimized setting in place unless they have a specific playback problem. Google cautions that disabling optimization can let an app run more while it is not in use and consume more battery. Other Android manufacturers may show different menus and controls. See Google’s Pixel instructions for Adaptive Battery and app optimization and Pixel battery-use guidance.
Limit connections and syncing selectively
When you have downloaded music, consider whether you need mobile data, Wi-Fi, or automatic syncing during that listening session. Turning off a connection you do not need may reduce ongoing activity, but do not use Airplane mode as a blanket fix: you may still need Bluetooth headphones, calls, mobile service, or Wi-Fi. Check your phone’s connection controls and keep the services your listening setup requires. Google’s Pixel guidance for stretching a low battery discusses limiting connectivity and automatic syncing.
What these steps can—and cannot—promise
Google’s cited support pages offer qualitative advice, not a measured increase in listening hours or a percentage battery saving for these music-player steps. Treat the recommendations as ways to reduce avoidable screen and network use, not as a guarantee of a particular runtime.
