Best Alternatives to AI English Speaking Partners for Practicing Conversation

You can practise English conversation without an AI partner by working with a tutor, talking with a language-exchange partner, following a structured speaking app, or using a general-purpose voice assistant. Each offers a different mix of human interaction, feedback, structure and convenience. Choose according to what you need most: detailed correction, spontaneous conversation, repeatable solo practice or an easier way to get started speaking.

Which alternative fits your speaking goal?

Option What it offers Main trade-off Best fit if you want…
Human tutor or teacher-guided practice Individual guidance and feedback on recurring errors You need access to a suitable person and time for scheduled interaction Someone to diagnose and explain what to improve
Peer conversation or language exchange Unscripted human interaction and natural turn-taking Partner availability and the amount or quality of correction can vary Spontaneous conversation and social practice
Structured speaking app Prompts and repeatable activities for solo practice Feedback quality and suitability for your level vary by tool A guided activity you can repeat on your own
General-purpose voice assistant Convenient voice interaction for simple conversational tasks It may not provide a language-learning curriculum, and communication breakdowns can be frustrating Accessible voice practice rather than a structured lesson
AI conversation partner Flexible, potentially frequent practice in a low-pressure setting Automated feedback can be inaccurate or shallow More chances to speak between human conversations

How to practise with a real person

Choose a tutor or teacher for explained feedback

A tutor or teacher can listen for patterns, explain why a phrase sounds unnatural, and help you practise a correction. This option is especially useful if you are unsure what is holding back your speaking or need feedback tailored to your level. Agree on the kind of correction you want: immediate interruption can help with a specific sound or recurring error, while notes after a conversation can leave more room for fluency.

Choose a peer or exchange partner for spontaneous turns

A peer conversation gives you practice reacting to another person, asking follow-up questions and keeping a discussion moving. That social back-and-forth is different from repeating a prompt or completing a scripted task. Partners may not be trained teachers, so treat corrections as suggestions; ask them to explain an unfamiliar one or check it with a trusted teacher.

AGO QnA ESL Card Game for Learning English. 3 Level Box Set. Practice English Conversation Through Play!
  • BUILD REAL CONVERSATION CONFIDENCE – Players practice asking and answering 108 useful English questions while giving their own personalized responses. This develops speaking confidence, vocabulary, grammar and the ability to respond more naturally.
  • THREE LEVELS THAT GROW WITH THE LEARNER – Start with accessible everyday questions, then progress to more varied vocabulary and increasingly challenging grammar, including past and future forms, comparisons and conditionals. Use each deck separately or combine levels for ongoing review.
  • SHUFFLED QUESTIONS KEEP PRACTICE FRESH – Match cards by color or number while asking and answering the questions played. Because the cards are shuffled, questions appear in a different order every game, encouraging learners to listen, think and respond rather than memorize a fixed sequence.
  • FLEXIBLE FOR CLASSROOM OR HOME USE – Ideal for ESL and EFL classes, tutoring, homeschool, language clubs and family learning. Use AGO for complete games, lesson warm-ups, speaking activities, small-group practice or flexible conversation prompts.
  • COMPLETE, CLASSROOM-READY BOX SET – Includes Aqua, Green and Orange: three 54-card decks containing 108 illustrated question cards and 54 action cards. Durable 300gsm linen-finish playing cards are easy to handle, while the sturdy magnetic-close box keeps all three decks organized and protected.

How to practise alone with structure

Use a speaking app for repeatable activities

A structured speaking app can give you prompts and a predictable task when you do not have a partner available. Repeating a short activity can help you focus on one goal—such as describing a routine or telling a story—rather than deciding what to say from scratch. App feedback and level fit differ, so do not assume an automated pronunciation score is definitive.

Use a voice assistant for simple spoken tasks

A general-purpose voice assistant can give you a convenient way to try short voice interactions, such as asking a question or practising a simple request. It is not necessarily designed as an English curriculum: it may not explain grammar, diagnose recurring errors or adapt a lesson to your level. If it misunderstands you, simplify or rephrase the task rather than treating every breakdown as evidence of a pronunciation problem.

What the evidence says about AI-supported speaking practice

Studies suggest that some AI-supported activities can create useful opportunities to speak, but their results are specific to the learners, tools and settings studied. They do not establish that every app works for every learner or that AI replaces a human conversation partner.

  • Classroom chatbot study (2022): Yang, Kim, Lee and Shin studied 314 Korean EFL learners aged 10–15 completing three tasks with the research team’s task-based voice chatbot, Ellie. The paper reports an average of 9.63 turns per session and an 88.3% task success rate. Those figures describe engagement and task execution in that study, not lasting language gains or superiority to human conversation. Read the study.
  • Mondly study (2025): Ding and Yusof examined undergraduate students at one IELTS preparation center over six weeks. The app group’s speaking scores improved and self-reported speaking anxiety fell more than in a comparison group doing alternative speaking activities, after adjustment for baseline scores. This small, short study in one setting is promising, but it is not a guarantee of the same outcome elsewhere. Read the study.
  • Systematic review (2024): A review in Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence describes potential benefits such as interaction, convenience and psychological comfort, alongside challenges including disengagement, speech-recognition limits, level mismatch and monotonous formats. Read the review.
  • Cambridge review (2024): The Role of AI in Language Learning: Research, Evidence and Strategies discusses pronunciation tools, intelligent personal assistants and chatbots. It warns that inaccurate feedback can reinforce errors, and notes that outcomes vary by learner; some reviewed work found speaking and listening gains with sustained teacher guidance. The review says AI speech evaluation tools “have the potential to support learners with their speaking practice in anxiety-free settings.” Read the review.

Build a routine that moves from practice to conversation

Combining solo rehearsal with human interaction gives each method a clear role: practise language at your own pace, then test whether you can use it spontaneously and ask questions when feedback is unclear.

  1. Pick one speaking goal. For example, practise describing your work, asking for directions or telling a short story.
  2. Rehearse on your own. Use a prompt, a structured app or a voice task to prepare words and phrases. Keep the exercise short enough to repeat.
  3. Use the language with a person. Try the same topic with a tutor, teacher or peer, but allow the conversation to go beyond your prepared answer.
  4. Check uncertain corrections. Speech recognition and automated pronunciation feedback can be imperfect. Verify unfamiliar or consequential corrections with a trusted teacher or another reliable source.
  5. Adjust the next session. If you need clearer guidance, prioritize a teacher; if you need more natural turn-taking, seek peer conversation; if getting started feels difficult, begin with lower-pressure solo practice.

Choose based on what you need next

If you want an explanation of recurring errors, start with a tutor or teacher-guided session. If you want to get comfortable responding in real time, seek peer conversation. If you need a repeatable activity between conversations, try a structured app; for simple voice interaction, a general-purpose assistant may be enough. The useful question is not which option is universally best, but which one addresses the gap in your current practice.
