The Switch release is cloud-streamed: Capcom says its game saves are stored on a server, while Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup is not supported for this title.
That means saving is straightforward once you know which menu to use, but it is not the same as backing up ordinary Switch save data. Backup: Nintendo says this game does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. An NSO membership does not add that option.
The official instructions identify menu names and actions rather than a Switch 2-specific button sequence. Controller prompts can vary with the controller or menu context, so follow the labels shown on your screen.
How to make a manual save
1. Reach a typewriter
Manual saving is tied to the typewriter. You cannot create a regular slot save from anywhere in a room, from the pause screen, or from the HOME Menu. Explore until you reach a typewriter, then interact with it. If you are trying to save before quitting, do not close the cloud session first; reach the typewriter while you are still in the game.
2. Select a save slot
After interacting with the typewriter, choose an available entry in the save menu. Selecting that entry creates a slot save. The game gives each user 20 slot-save files in the Switch cloud version, so you can keep several earlier points instead of overwriting the same entry every time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the slots deliberately. For example, you may keep one recent save for ordinary progress and preserve another slot from an earlier point if you want a safer fallback. The important limitation is that the 20 slots are the stated allotment per user; they are not 20 slots shared by every profile on the console. The separate autosave is counted in addition to those slots.
3. Confirm the save before leaving
Remain in the save interface long enough to see that the slot has been accepted, then return to the game or menu normally. Because this is a streamed title, the game is communicating with a server while you play. If your connection is dropping, avoid assuming that an interrupted session completed a save. Reopen the save menu when possible and verify that the intended slot is listed before ending the session.
Understanding the 20 slots and the autosave
Capcom lists 20 slot saves plus one autosave per user for Resident Evil 2 Cloud on Nintendo Switch. A slot save is the file you deliberately create at a typewriter. The autosave is maintained separately and appears as AUTO in the save/load interface described by Capcom.
These categories are useful because they serve different purposes. A manual slot is the one you choose and can preserve as an earlier point. The autosave is the most recent automatic point available in modes that use autosaving. If you repeatedly overwrite one slot, you lose the earlier point that was stored there; using multiple slots gives you more choice when you need to replay a section.
The allotment is attached to the user profile. If more than one person plays on the Switch, each user should select their own profile before starting the cloud game so that saves are kept with the intended account. The published specifications do not promise that saves can be copied between profiles, so treat each user’s slots as separate.
How to resume with Continue
Choose Continue from the main menu when you want the newest available save without browsing the list. The same option can appear on the game-over screen. Capcom describes Continue as loading the most recent dated save, and that save can be either a manual slot save or the autosave.

Continue is the best choice when you simply want to get back into the game after stopping, or when you do not care which of your recent saves is selected. It avoids the extra step of opening the list and comparing entries. It is also useful after a game over when you want to return quickly to the latest point rather than manually locating a slot.
Continue is not a command to save your current position. It only loads an existing save. If you want to preserve your current progress before leaving, save at a typewriter first, then exit and use Continue the next time you play.

How to choose a particular save with Load Game
Open Load Game from the main menu or pause menu. The list contains your slot saves and, when available, the autosave identified as AUTO. Highlight the entry you want and confirm the displayed menu prompt to load it.
Use Load Game instead of Continue when you want an earlier slot, want to compare several saved points, or specifically want the AUTO entry. This is the safer route when you have been alternating slots and do not want the game to choose the newest one automatically. Read the dates or other identifying information shown in the list so you select the intended file.
Loading does not erase the other entries. It simply starts the game from the selected save. If you later decide that you prefer the newer point, you can return to Load Game and select it, provided you have not replaced or otherwise lost that slot.
Continue versus Load Game
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Continue | Loads the most recent dated save, including an autosave when one exists. | Use it for the quickest return to your latest progress. |
| Load Game | Displays the save list so you can choose a slot or the AUTO entry. | Use it when you need an earlier save or a specific file. |
Neither command creates a new save. Saving and loading are separate actions: save at a typewriter, then use Continue or Load Game later to resume.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What changes in Hardcore mode
Hardcore mode has no autosave. There is no AUTO entry to rescue you after a mistake, and Continue cannot load an automatic checkpoint in that mode. Your progress depends on the manual saves you make at typewriters.
Hardcore typewriter saves also consume an Ink Ribbon. You need to have a ribbon available when you interact with the typewriter; without one, you cannot create the manual save. This makes the 20 slots a storage limit, not a promise that every visit to a typewriter is free.
Plan saves around the ribbons in your inventory. If you are about to enter a section that you do not want to repeat, consider whether the current progress justifies spending a ribbon. Conversely, do not assume that waiting for an autosave will protect you: Hardcore does not provide one. Keep track of which slot you last used so you know exactly where a later Load Game action will return you.
The basic interaction remains the same: reach a typewriter, choose a slot, and confirm the save. The difference is the absence of the automatic file and the ribbon cost.
Cloud storage is not the same as a Nintendo backup
Capcom says the Nintendo Switch release stores its game saves on a server because this is a cloud-streamed version. That describes where the game maintains its save data for play. It does not mean the title participates in Nintendo’s separate Save Data Cloud backup service.
Nintendo’s product listing explicitly says Resident Evil 2 Cloud does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. Therefore, an NSO membership does not create a downloadable backup copy for this game, and the HOME Menu’s Save Data Cloud command cannot be used to back it up.
Do not confuse the two uses of the word “cloud.” The game needs an online connection to stream the session and communicate with its server-stored saves. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud is a separate system for backing up compatible locally managed save data. This title is listed as unsupported for that backup feature.

Why the usual HOME Menu backup steps do not apply
For a compatible game, Nintendo’s general procedure is to highlight the title in the HOME Menu, press the plus or minus button, choose Save Data Cloud, select a user, and choose Back Up Save Data. The equivalent controls are available under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
Those instructions are useful as a comparison, not as a solution for Resident Evil 2 Cloud. Because Nintendo lists this title as unsupported, the Save Data Cloud controls cannot back up its saves. If you do not see a backup option for the game, that is an incompatibility listed for the title, not a missing NSO subscription.
The official information also does not establish that a save from this cloud release transfers to another edition of Resident Evil 2. Do not promise that a server-stored save will appear in a different version, a different platform release, or a future native Switch 2 edition. Treat the cloud version’s save behavior as its own system unless Capcom or Nintendo publishes a specific transfer statement.
Connection requirements for saving and loading
Resident Evil 2 Cloud is streamed rather than confirmed as a separate native Switch 2 installation. Nintendo UK says that a fast, stable and permanent internet connection is required to play it.
Nintendo also warns that an unstable connection may disconnect the cloud session after a few minutes. Capcom lists internet access as required for the cloud version.
This requirement affects every part of the process. You need the connection to start the streamed game, remain in the session, reach the typewriter, and load a save from the server. A local offline launch should not be expected. If the connection fails while you are playing, you may lose the session before you can reach a typewriter and create a new manual save.
Latency and stability can vary by location, time of day, wireless conditions, and internet provider. A connection that works for browsing or downloads is not automatically reliable for an interactive cloud session. Test under the same conditions in which you intend to play.
Use the free demo to test your own network
Capcom recommends trying the free demo before purchasing when you are uncertain about cloud performance. The published demo allowance is up to five minutes per session, three times. That gives you a practical way to check whether the stream starts, remains responsive, and stays connected on your network.
-
Run the demo from the room and console position where you expect to play.
-
Use your normal connection rather than temporarily moving to a different network that you will not have later.

Check whether the session disconnects, becomes unstable, or develops noticeable delay during movement and menu navigation.
-
Repeat the test at a time when you normally play, because provider conditions can change.
A successful demo is encouraging but is not a permanent guarantee. Capcom cautions that service quality depends on the internet provider, and conditions can change after the test. The demo is a check of your real setup, not a promise that every future session will be identical.
Troubleshooting common save and load questions
“I cannot find a save option.”
Make sure you are interacting with a typewriter. Manual slot saves are not available from any location. In Hardcore mode, also check that you have an Ink Ribbon, because a ribbon is required for each typewriter save.

“Continue loaded the wrong point.”
Continue is designed to load the most recent dated save, not a file you choose manually. Open Load Game instead and select the desired slot or the AUTO entry. If you need a particular earlier point, do not use Continue as a substitute for browsing the list.
“There is no AUTO entry.”
Hardcore has no autosave, so an AUTO entry is not available there. In a mode that supports autosaving, the entry is identified as AUTO in Capcom’s save/load description. If the list still does not show what you expect, check that you are using the intended user profile and that the cloud session is connected.
“Can Nintendo Switch Online restore my save?”
No Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup is supported for this title according to Nintendo’s product listing. The game’s server-stored save system should not be described as an NSO backup, and the standard HOME Menu backup procedure cannot be used for it.
“Will my save work in another Resident Evil 2 edition?”
The cited official information does not establish transfer behavior between this cloud release and another edition. Do not assume that a save will appear in a separate release or on another platform.

“The game disconnected before I could save.”
Reconnect under more stable network conditions and return to the game. Because manual saving requires reaching a typewriter, there is no general anywhere-save command to use during a disconnection. Nintendo and Capcom both emphasize the need for a stable internet connection for the cloud version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller and menu guidance on Switch 2
Capcom lists support for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Con, as well as TV, tabletop, and handheld play. The published save/load guidance identifies Continue, Load Game, the typewriter interaction, and the AUTO label, but it does not provide a verified Switch 2-specific button sequence.
Use the on-screen prompt for the controller mode you are using. The action is the same whether you play handheld, with Joy-Con, or with a Pro Controller: reach the typewriter for a manual save, then choose the appropriate menu command to load. Avoid relying on button directions copied from another platform’s guide when the visible prompt on Switch 2 gives the authoritative instruction.
Cloud release specifications that affect play
Capcom describes the Nintendo Switch cloud release as single-player. It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and lists a maximum resolution of 720p for those modes. It also lists Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Con support. These are product specifications, not independent measurements of streaming quality.
