Sony has announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition and a matching add-on disc drive for Japan, both scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. The catch is a regional use restriction: Sony says the console can be used only with its system language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account set to Japan. The disc drive is sold separately.
What Sony announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the two products on October 13, 2026: a Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (model CFI-2200B02S) and a matching Midnight Black disc drive (model CFI-ZDD1J01). Both are Japan-market products, and Sony has not announced an international version or international prices.

The console is a digital edition with an 825 GB SSD and no disc drive installed. It supports downloaded PS5 and PS4 games from the Japanese PlayStation Store. Owners who want to play packaged games must buy and install the matching drive separately; pairing the drive to the console requires an internet connection.
The catch: Japanese language and account requirements
Sony says the console is usable only when the system language is Japanese and the PlayStation account’s country/region is Japan. In its announcement, Sony wrote: “本体言語を「日本語」、かつ「国／地域」を「日本」に設定しているPlayStation®のアカウントでのみ利用可能となります。” That means the account must have Japan as its country/region, with the console language set to Japanese.

Sony describes the hardware as restricted to use in Japan. Its announcement does not establish that buyers elsewhere can use it simply by changing settings, nor does it announce export support. Check these requirements before considering a purchase.

The console package includes one DualSense controller, horizontal feet, HDMI and power cables, a USB cable, printed materials and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The vertical stand is sold separately. Retailer prices may differ from Sony’s suggested prices, and Sony says specifications may change without notice.

Is the disc drive worth adding?
The decision comes down to whether you want to play packaged games and whether you meet the Japan-only requirements. The console alone is the lower-cost option for downloaded games. If you want packaged-game playback, the drive adds ¥11,980 to Sony’s announced Japanese suggested price, bringing the two products’ combined suggested prices to ¥66,980 including tax. That figure is arithmetic, not a separately announced bundle.

The drive also requires internet access for pairing. Sony’s announcement says disc games released before January 2028 will remain usable, while newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 will be sold only as downloads. That policy concerns future releases; it does not mean existing disc games stop working.

Warranty campaign
Sony says the console qualifies for a campaign extending its standard one-year manufacturer warranty by one year, for two years total, for eligible purchases made through March 31, 2027. Buyers must apply to the campaign. Check Sony’s current terms and confirm eligibility before purchasing.

For context only, Sony announced on March 27, 2026 that the U.S. PS5 Digital Edition would have a recommended retail price of $599.99 effective April 2, 2026. That is a different console and market—not a like-for-like price comparison with the Japan-only Midnight Black model—and it should not be treated as a currency conversion.
