In Vim, press Esc, type :wq, and press Enter to save the file and exit. Use :q! followed by Enter to abandon unsaved changes. In Nano, press Ctrl+O, press Enter to confirm the filename, then press Ctrl+X to leave; if Nano asks whether to save modified text, choose the save response and confirm the filename.

The crucial difference is that Vim is modal, while Nano is modeless for normal typing. Vim commands must be entered from Normal mode; Nano exposes its main actions as Control-key shortcuts shown in the terminal’s help bar.

In every Vim colon command, pressing Enter is what executes the command. In Nano, the filename confirmation after Write Out is a separate prompt, so do not press Ctrl+X until that prompt has been handled.
Saving and exiting Vim
Why the Esc key matters
Vim has modes. When you open a file and type text, you are normally in Insert mode. In that mode, letters go into the document rather than becoming editor commands. Press Esc to return to Normal mode before typing a command that starts with a colon. If you are unsure of the current mode, pressing Esc twice is harmless and gives you a reliable starting point.

Save the file and remain in Vim
- Press
Escto reach Normal mode. - Type
:w. A colon appears on the command line at the bottom of the screen. - Press
Enter. Vim writes the current buffer to its filename and leaves you editing.
This is useful when you want to make a checkpoint, inspect another part of the file, or continue editing after a save. The write operation affects the current buffer; it does not close the editor.
Save and exit with :wq
- Press
Esc. - Type
:wq. - Press
Enter.
:wq combines a write with a quit. If Vim reports a write problem, read the message instead of assuming that the file was saved. A full or read-only filesystem, a path you cannot write, or a changed file on disk can prevent the write from completing.

:x writes the file only if Vim believes the buffer has changed, then exits. It is a useful save-and-quit command when you do not want an unchanged file’s timestamp needlessly rewritten. The sequence is Esc, :x, Enter.
Use ZZ as the Normal-mode shortcut
From Normal mode, press an uppercase Z twice: ZZ. This writes the file and exits. There is no colon and no separate Enter for this shortcut. The Vim user manual describes it as the command that writes the file and exits, so it is a direct alternative to :wq.

Leaving Vim without saving
Discard edits in the current buffer
- Press
Esc. - Type
:q!. - Press
Enter.
The exclamation mark forces the quit and throws away unsaved changes in that buffer. Use it only when you deliberately want to lose the edits made since the last write. If the file has not been modified, ordinary :q is enough; Vim normally refuses a plain quit when changes are pending so that an accidental exit does not erase work.
Understand a quit warning
If Vim says there are unsaved changes, it is reporting that the buffer in memory differs from the version last written. To preserve those changes, stop and run :wq or :x. To abandon them, use :q!. Do not respond to the warning by repeatedly pressing random keys: return to Normal mode with Esc, enter the intended command, and finish it with Enter.

A single Vim process can contain several buffers or split windows. A command that quits one view may not end the entire process. The quick-reference commands below apply to all open buffers or windows:
:qaquits all, provided no buffer needs a save.:qa!quits all and discards unsaved changes. The force mark applies to every affected buffer, so use it only when that loss is intentional.:wqawrites all writable buffers and quits.:xawrites changed buffers and quits all, avoiding writes for buffers that have not changed.
These commands still require Normal mode, a leading colon, and Enter. If one buffer cannot be written, Vim can stop the all-buffer operation and display the reason; read that message before deciding whether to correct the path, permissions, or command.

Vim troubleshooting on a remote server
If typing inserts text instead of a command
You are probably in Insert mode. Press Esc, then type the colon command. The colon should appear on the bottom command line rather than inside the document.
If the command appears but nothing happens
Press Enter. Vim’s manual explicitly notes that the key is required to finish an ex command. For a shortcut such as ZZ, do not add a colon; for :wq or :q!, do not omit the colon.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Vim says the file is unchanged
An unchanged message means there is no new buffer content to write. If your objective is simply to leave, use :q after checking that you do not need to save anything. If you expected a change, verify that you edited the intended buffer and that the insertion actually appeared in the file.
If a write fails
Remain in Vim long enough to read the error. Check the displayed path and whether the account used for the remote session can write it. A successful quit is not proof of a successful save: resolve the write error, run a write command again, and only then quit. If the file is intentionally read-only, do not force a write blindly; preserve the text elsewhere or reopen the file with an account and location that are authorized to modify it.

If you are connected over SSH and keys feel different
Hold the Control key while pressing the letter; Ctrl+O is not the same as typing a capital O. Terminal emulators can display control characters or transmit escape sequences differently, but Vim’s Esc, colon commands, and Enter sequence remains the dependable path. If the session is lagging, wait for the command-line response before pressing more keys, so a delayed screen does not cause duplicate commands.
Saving and exiting Nano
Write the current buffer with Ctrl+O
- Press and hold
Ctrl, then pressO. Nano labels this action “Write Out”; the equivalent notation is^O. - Read the filename shown at the bottom. If it is the file you intended to edit, press
Enterto accept it. - Wait for Nano to return to the editing screen. The buffer has been written, but Nano is still open.
Write Out is Nano’s save operation. It can be used repeatedly while you work, creating a recent on-disk checkpoint without leaving the editor. If Nano presents a different filename, correct it before confirming; accepting a changed name can create a new file instead of updating the original.
Exit with Ctrl+X
Press Ctrl+X (shown as ^X in Nano’s shortcut notation) to close the buffer and exit. If you have already used Write Out and made no further edits, Nano can leave immediately. If the buffer is modified, Nano asks what to do with those changes. Choose the save response to write them, then confirm the filename; choose the discard response only when abandoning the edits is intentional.
Save and exit as one reliable routine
- Press
Ctrl+O. - Check the displayed filename and press
Enter. - Press
Ctrl+X. - If a modified-buffer question appears because you typed more after the write, select the save response and confirm the filename.
This sequence is deliberately explicit: it separates writing from leaving, so you can see which filename Nano will update before the session closes.
Best Value
Nano prompts and cancellation
Cancel a filename or other prompt
When Nano is asking for a filename or displaying a prompt that permits cancellation, Ctrl+C cancels that prompt and returns to the editor. It does not mean “discard the file”; it only backs out of the current prompt. To discard modified text while exiting, use Ctrl+X and then select the discard response in Nano’s save question.
Why the bottom help bar matters
Nano normally displays its active shortcuts along the bottom edge of the terminal. The caret notation means Control: ^O is Ctrl+O, and ^X is Ctrl+X. The help bar is especially useful on a server because local configuration can change key bindings. Compare the labels on your screen with the standard shortcuts before assuming a key failed.

Vim and Nano compared
| Aspect | Vim | Nano |
|---|---|---|
| Editing model | Modal: Insert mode is for text; Normal mode is for commands. | Modeless for ordinary typing; commands use Control-key shortcuts. |
| Save while remaining open | Esc, :w, Enter |
Ctrl+O, then confirm the filename with Enter |
| Save and quit | Esc, :wq, Enter; :x and ZZ are alternatives. |
Write Out, confirm the filename, then Ctrl+X |
| Quit with edits pending | :q!, Enter discards them. |
Ctrl+X, then choose the discard response. |
| Command completion | Colon commands end when you press Enter. |
Write Out and exit each involve a visible prompt or shortcut. |
The practical decision is simple: in Vim, first recover Normal mode; in Nano, follow the control-key label and answer any save prompt. Neither editor can bypass the server account’s file permissions merely because a command was entered correctly.
Handling unsaved changes safely
- Save before changing context. In Vim, use
:w; in Nano, useCtrl+Oand confirm the filename. - Read every save or quit question. A warning indicates that the newest text exists in memory but has not been written to disk.
- Use force forms only for a conscious decision. Vim’s
:q!and:qa!discard changes; Nano’s discard response does the equivalent for the buffer being closed. - After a write error, stay in the editor and fix the cause. Exiting first can leave you with only the in-memory copy.
- Before closing a remote terminal, wait for the editor’s confirmation or return to the shell prompt. A dropped connection can end your session before an intended write completes.
Version and configuration details
The Vim project’s current help page reports Vim version 9.2.1186, with a last change dated 2026-02-14. The GNU nano manual documents Nano version 9.2. Distribution packages can lag or apply local patches, so the version installed on a particular Linux server may differ from those documentation figures.
Nano supports configurable key bindings and a --saveonexit option. Consequently, a server administrator’s configuration can alter how exit and save prompts behave. If the shortcut you expect does not match the bottom help bar, follow the labels shown by that installation. The standard Ctrl+O Write Out and Ctrl+X exit workflow remains the reference behavior described by the GNU nano manual.
