Use the method that matches the scope of your change. In the Block Editor, open the three-dot Options menu and choose Code editor to edit the entire post or page as HTML. For one block, open its options and choose Edit as HTML when that option is available. To add a separate fragment, insert a Custom HTML block, type /html in a new paragraph, enter the markup, preview it, and select Update.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
If WordPress removes a script, iframe, or other tag after saving, your account may not have the unfiltered_html capability. WordPress then sanitizes the content with wp_kses(). The Classic Editor uses a different workflow: switch from Visual to Text or HTML mode before entering markup.

Choose the right HTML editing method
WordPress offers several ways to work with markup, and they are not interchangeable. Decide whether you need to change the complete document, one existing block, or add an independent fragment.
| Task | Editor or tool | Where to open it | What is saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rewrite the complete post or page as HTML | Block Editor Code editor | Three-dot Options menu > Code editor | The whole document, including all blocks and their comments |
| Adjust markup in one block | Edit as HTML | Block options menu > Edit as HTML | That block’s markup only |
| Add a standalone HTML fragment | Custom HTML block | Block Inserter or /html |
Static markup in that block’s post content |
| Edit a site using the Classic Editor | Text/HTML mode | Text or HTML tab beside Visual | Markup entered in the classic content field |
| Embed a supported service | Embed block | Block Inserter > Embed | Embed settings rather than hand-written markup |
| Collect submissions | Form block | Block Inserter > Form | Form fields and their settings |
| Apply reusable styling | Custom CSS | Site’s CSS interface | CSS managed outside an individual post’s HTML |
| Add verification code or scripts site-wide | Header-code tool | Site or theme configuration | Code managed centrally, not in one post |
The first three options are for editing content in a specific post or page. The alternatives are usually safer and easier when the objective is an embed, a form, styling, or site-wide code rather than a raw fragment.

Edit the entire post or page in the Block Editor
The Code editor exposes the complete document, not just the block currently selected. It is the appropriate choice when you need to inspect or change several blocks, repair block markup, or paste a document that already uses WordPress block comments.
Open Code editor
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Posts or Pages, then select the item you want to change.
- In the Block Editor, open the three-dot Options menu in the editor toolbar.
- Choose Code editor. The visual canvas changes to the document’s HTML representation.
- Place the cursor where the change belongs and edit the markup. Preserve the block structure and any WordPress block delimiters unless you intentionally want to change the block type.
- Switch back to the visual editor to inspect the rendered blocks. Correct malformed tags or unexpected nesting before publishing.
- Select Update to save an existing post or page, or Publish when the item has not yet been published.
Code editor mode is a document-level view. It is different from a Custom HTML block: text entered here can represent headings, paragraphs, lists, images, and every other block in the document, while a Custom HTML block is one block among the others.

What to check before saving
- Every opening element has a matching closing element, unless it is a void element such as an image or line break.
- Attributes use valid quotation marks and are attached to the correct element.
- Block comments remain paired when you are editing block-based content.
- Links point to the intended destination and images retain their alternative text.
- Characters such as
&,<, and>are encoded correctly when they are meant to appear as text rather than markup.
Edit only one block with Edit as HTML
When the change belongs to a single paragraph, heading, list, image, or other block, use that block’s own HTML view instead of exposing the entire document.
- Click the block you want to change.
- Open the block’s three-dot options menu.
- Choose Edit as HTML, if the block supports that command.
- Modify the markup inside the block. Keep the elements and attributes that the block expects unless you are deliberately converting it.
- Use the block options to return to the visual view, then inspect the result.
- Select Update or Publish.
The command is not available for every block or every situation. If it is missing, use the block’s normal settings, convert the content to a Custom HTML block when a raw fragment is appropriate, or use the document-level Code editor.

When this is preferable
Edit as HTML limits the area you can accidentally damage. It is useful for adding an attribute to one link, correcting inline markup, or checking why one block renders incorrectly. It does not provide a separate place for arbitrary site-wide JavaScript or CSS, and it does not bypass WordPress security rules.
Insert raw markup with a Custom HTML block
The Custom HTML block is designed for a self-contained HTML fragment inside one post or page. WordPress describes it as a way to insert code and fine-tune content. The block is static: its markup is stored directly in the post content rather than generated by a remote service.
Add the block from the inserter
- Open the post or page in the Block Editor and place the insertion point where the fragment should appear.
- Select the + Block Inserter button.
- Search for Custom HTML and select the block.
- Click the block’s Edit HTML area and enter the markup.
- Review the block’s preview beneath the editor. The preview helps reveal broken nesting, missing attributes, or a result that differs from what you intended.
- Save the post with Update or publish it.
Use the slash shortcut
- Insert a new paragraph block where the fragment belongs.
- Type
/html. - Press Enter, then choose Custom HTML if the inserter presents more than one match.
- Enter the markup, inspect the preview, and save the post.
Example: a simple accessible fragment
<section class='notice' aria-labelledby='notice-title'>
<h2 id='notice-title'>Service notice</h2>
<p>The maintenance window begins at 22:00 UTC.</p>
</section>
This kind of fragment is a good fit for the block because it has a clear boundary and belongs only in this post or page. If the same notice must appear across the site, manage it as a reusable pattern, template, or site-wide component instead of copying the HTML into many posts.
Edit HTML in the Classic Editor
Sites using the Classic Editor show Visual and Text (sometimes labelled HTML) modes. Choose Text/HTML before entering markup.

- Save with Update or publish the item.
Visual mode treats code as ordinary text. WordPress documentation explains that it converts the less-than and greater-than characters into character entities, so a snippet can appear on the page instead of being interpreted by the browser. The HTML editor does not perform that conversion, which means the browser can interpret the markup and affect the page layout. The exact labels and behavior can vary with the WordPress version, the editor in use, and installed plugins.
Displaying code instead of executing it
If your goal is to teach HTML and show the tags to readers, do not paste the example as live markup. Encode the angle brackets (for example, use < and >) or place the example in a code-oriented block. Otherwise the browser will attempt to render the elements.
Why WordPress removes scripts or iframes
Saving HTML is subject to user capabilities and sanitization. The Custom HTML documentation states that CSS and JavaScript panels are available only to users with the unfiltered_html capability. When that capability is absent, WordPress sanitizes post content with wp_kses() and removes disallowed markup, including tags such as <script> and <iframe>.
Symptoms of sanitization
- The code appears in the editor but disappears after you select Update.
- An iframe or script is removed while ordinary paragraphs and links remain.
- Another user can save the same markup, but your account cannot.
- Switching between visual and code views changes or strips elements.
What to do
- Confirm which account and role you are using. Do not assume that every administrator-like role has the same capability on every installation.
- Ask the site owner to verify whether your account has
unfiltered_html. Capability changes should be made only when the site owner accepts the security implications. - Use an official Embed block when the content is a supported video, map, or social post. An embed block lets WordPress handle the provider-specific markup.
- Use a Form block for contact details, signups, or feedback rather than pasting a form script into a post.
- Use Custom CSS for styling and a header-code tool for verification metadata or scripts that belong across the site.
Do not repeatedly paste a tag that WordPress is deliberately removing. Sanitization is a security control, not an editor glitch. If a script is essential, it should be managed through the site’s approved configuration or plugin process, with a role that is authorized to change it.

Common failure modes and fixes
The HTML appears as text
You probably entered it in Visual mode or a normal Paragraph block. Return to the Classic Editor’s Text/HTML tab, or move the fragment into a Custom HTML block in the Block Editor. If the intent is to display code for readers, keep it encoded so it remains text.
The block says the HTML is invalid
Block validation detects a difference between the markup saved for a block and the markup the block expects. First copy the current content somewhere safe. Then inspect the block for unclosed tags, altered block attributes, or accidental text outside the expected element. Use the block’s recovery option only after checking what it will change; alternatively, recreate the intended fragment as a Custom HTML block.
The Tool Desk

Check nesting and closing tags, then inspect the browser-facing result in the post preview. A missing closing element can cause later content to become part of a heading, link, list, or section. Also check whether a theme stylesheet supplies the class names you used; HTML alone does not guarantee a particular visual appearance.
The code works in the editor but not on the published page
Compare the saved content with the published output. Sanitization may have removed the element, or the theme may not provide the CSS or JavaScript that the fragment expects. Test the page while logged out as well as logged in, because editor permissions can change what you see.
Best Value
An iframe or script vanishes after updating
Check for the unfiltered_html capability first. If it is not available, use the appropriate Embed, Form, Custom CSS, or header-code solution rather than trying to evade sanitization.
Changes made in one editor are altered in another
Block-based and classic editors represent content differently, and plugins can add their own transformations. Choose one editing mode for the task, save a backup copy of the original markup, and inspect the rendered result after switching modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse alternatives when raw HTML is not the real requirement
Hand-written markup gives precise control, but it also makes you responsible for valid structure, accessibility attributes, responsive behavior, and future maintenance. WordPress.com support guidance recommends the following purpose-built tools.
Embeds for video, maps, and social posts
Use an Embed block when a provider is supported. It keeps the provider URL and embed settings in a block designed for that content, rather than requiring you to maintain an iframe by hand.
Forms for contact and feedback
Use a Form block for contact details, registrations, signups, or feedback. A form block represents fields and submission behavior directly; pasting arbitrary form code into a post can fail when scripts are sanitized or when the provider changes its embed code.
Custom CSS for presentation
Use Custom CSS when the only objective is color, spacing, typography, or layout. Keeping presentation rules out of repeated post fragments makes them easier to update and avoids mixing CSS with content markup.
Header-code tools for site-wide code
Verification metadata and scripts that must load on many pages belong in a header-code tool or the site’s approved configuration. A Custom HTML block is scoped to one post or page and is not a reliable place for site-wide code.
Quick Recap
A safe workflow for production edits
- Define the scope. Decide whether the change affects one block, the whole document, one page, or the entire site.
- Choose the narrowest tool. Prefer Edit as HTML for one block, Custom HTML for one self-contained fragment, Code editor for document-wide changes, and a purpose-built tool for embeds, forms, CSS, or global scripts.
- Keep an original copy. Before a significant edit, copy the existing markup into a secure note or use the site’s revision history so you can restore the previous content.
- Enter valid, bounded markup. Keep related elements together, close tags, use meaningful headings, and add alternative text to informative images.
- Preview before saving. Check desktop and narrow-screen layouts, links, keyboard focus, and the surrounding content. A preview catches layout damage that the code view cannot.
- Save and verify the stored result. After selecting Update, reopen the editor to see whether WordPress retained the elements. This is where sanitization becomes apparent.
- Test the public page. View it logged out and, when relevant, in a private browser window. Confirm that the final output matches the editor preview.
- Record recurring fragments. If the same HTML is needed repeatedly, use a reusable block or pattern where appropriate instead of maintaining many independent copies.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You must change headings, paragraphs, and several blocks at once | Block Editor Code editor | It exposes the complete document in one view. |
| You need to adjust markup in one existing block | Edit as HTML | It limits the change to that block. |
| You have a self-contained fragment such as a notice or custom section | Custom HTML block | It stores static markup directly in the post content and provides a preview. |
| You are using the Classic Editor | Text/HTML mode | It prevents Visual mode from encoding the markup as displayed text. |
| You need a supported video, map, or social item | Embed block | The block handles the service-specific embed settings. |
| You need contact, signup, or feedback fields | Form block | It models the form instead of relying on pasted provider code. |
| You need styles reused across content | Custom CSS | Styles remain separate from individual post markup. |
| You need verification metadata or scripts across the site | Header-code tool | Site-wide code is managed centrally and is not tied to one post. |
| Your script or iframe is removed on save | Check unfiltered_html, then use an approved alternative |

Key points to remember
- Use Code editor for the entire Block Editor document.
- Use Edit as HTML for one block when the command is available.
- Use a Custom HTML block for a standalone fragment and preview it before updating.
- Use the Classic Editor’s Text/HTML mode for live markup; Visual mode encodes angle brackets.
- Missing
unfiltered_htmlcan causewp_kses()to remove scripts, iframes, and other disallowed elements. - Choose Embed, Form, Custom CSS, or header-code tools when those match the actual purpose better than raw HTML.
