How to Save an HTML Report Page as a Screenshot Using Headless Chrome

Use Chrome’s headless screenshot flag for a quick capture, or Puppeteer when you need a scripted output path, full-page image, or report-specific readiness wait.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick capture, run Chrome in headless mode with --screenshot and set the viewport size explicitly:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 https://example.com/report.html

Chrome writes screenshot.png to the current working directory by default. For a report that renders charts or data asynchronously, add a wait and verify the result. For repeatable scripts, Puppeteer provides explicit output paths and full-page capture.

Capture a report with Chrome’s command line

Replace chrome with the executable name or path available on your system, and replace the example URL with the report’s URL:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 https://example.com/report.html

This captures the rendered page at a 1280-by-1000 viewport. The output file is screenshot.png in the current working directory unless your environment changes where Chrome is launched. The window size matters: a different viewport can change responsive layout, line wrapping, and which content appears on screen. Chrome’s command-line reference documents this basic workflow and its default output behavior: Chrome Headless command-line reference.

Wait for delayed rendering

If the report needs time to render, use --timeout with a duration in milliseconds:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/report.html

That asks Chrome to wait up to 5,000 milliseconds before capture, even if the page is still loading. It is a fixed time allowance, not proof that a report-specific chart or data request has finished. Tune it for the application and inspect the screenshot. Chrome also documents --virtual-time-budget as a timing option; consult the CLI reference for the installed Chrome version before relying on version-sensitive flags.

Choose the output location

The documented simple CLI example saves to screenshot.png in the current working directory. The cited CLI reference does not document a command-line output-path option. If you need a specific filename or directory as part of an automated workflow, use Puppeteer’s screenshot API.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({width: 1280, height: 1000});
  await page.goto('https://example.com/report.html', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
  await page.screenshot({path: 'report.png', fullPage: true});
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The script sets the viewport before navigation, navigates to the report, writes report.png, and closes the browser even if an error occurs. Puppeteer documents this navigation-and-screenshot pattern and its screenshot options at Screenshots and ScreenshotOptions (the latter identified version 25.12.0 when accessed on 2026-10-03).

Do not treat network idle as report readiness

waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is one navigation strategy; it does not establish that the report’s own rendering work is complete. If the page exposes a reliable ready signal, wait for it explicitly before taking the screenshot. For example, when the application adds a known element only after its report is ready, use a selector wait:

await page.goto('https://example.com/report.html', {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
await page.waitForSelector('#report-ready');
await page.screenshot({path: 'report.png', fullPage: true});

Replace #report-ready with a selector that the page actually uses; this example will not work unchanged unless that element exists. For a report without a ready marker, a delay can be used, but it should be chosen and validated for that application rather than assumed to be universally sufficient.

Capture options Puppeteer supports

  • Full page: set fullPage: true to capture beyond the visible viewport.
  • Output path: set path to choose the file name and location.
  • Crop: use the screenshot clip option to capture a specified rectangle.
  • Element-only: locate an element and call its screenshot() method.
  • Transparent background: use the screenshot option when a transparent output is appropriate.

Check the Puppeteer documentation for the installed version’s option names and behavior. The simple Chrome CLI example establishes viewport screenshot behavior, not a guarantee that arbitrary long documents are captured in full.

Understand what the screenshot contains

A screenshot is an image of the page as rendered by the browser. It is not the HTML source. Chrome’s --dump-dom option instead emits serialized DOM after Chrome has parsed the page and run scripts; it does not produce a screenshot or the original source file. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference for that distinction.

For a report stored on disk, verify the file URL and dependent assets in your specific environment. The documented workflows here do not establish a universal procedure for local files, relative assets, or browser file-access restrictions. Confirm that local data, scripts, fonts, and images loaded before treating the capture as complete. Chrome’s separate Headless Chrome shell documentation may also be relevant when choosing a Chrome headless distribution; behavior and available options can vary by installed version.

Choose between the CLI and Puppeteer

Need Chrome command line Puppeteer
One-off capture Concise command with --headless --screenshot URL. Requires a script and library setup.
Output path Documented default is screenshot.png in the current working directory; the cited CLI reference does not document a path option. path selects the image file path.
Viewport --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT. Set the page viewport before navigation or capture.
Full-page capture The cited CLI reference does not promise full-page output for arbitrary long pages. fullPage: true is documented.
Crop or element capture Not covered by the cited CLI instructions. Use clip or an element’s screenshot().
Timing Use documented timing flags such as --timeout or --virtual-time-budget. Choose navigation waits and add application-specific waits where needed.

Troubleshoot incomplete or missing captures

  • No screenshot file appears: check the directory from which Chrome was launched. The documented default is the current working directory. Confirm that the Chrome binary name or path is valid and that the process can write to that directory.
  • Charts or report values are missing: the page may render them after the capture. Increase the CLI timeout or, with Puppeteer, wait for a reliable report-ready selector. Inspect the output rather than assuming a fixed delay is sufficient.
  • The image shows only part of a long report: the CLI reference does not promise full-page capture. Use Puppeteer with fullPage: true.
  • The layout differs from the browser window: set the intended viewport deliberately. Responsive pages can rearrange content at different dimensions.
  • Local images or fonts are absent: check the file URL and each dependent asset in the environment where Chrome runs; local-file access and relative-resource behavior are not universal across setups.
  • A Puppeteer capture ends before the report is ready: network-idle navigation alone may not reflect application readiness. Wait for a page-specific signal, and ensure the selector is real and appears only when the report is ready.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture a report URL with one GET request. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/report.html -o report.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save the screenshot as JPEG or WebP with Chrome’s command-line flag?

The cited Chrome command-line instructions document the default screenshot as PNG and do not establish a CLI format option. For format choices, use an API or a documented library workflow.

Does `–dump-dom` save a screenshot?

No. It emits serialized DOM after parsing and script execution; use `–screenshot` for an image.
