If that works, the original page may be the problem; if it does not, investigate the browser or print path. Then try a different route: Microsoft Edge’s Immersive Reader or system print dialog, Chrome’s PDF destination, or Chrome’s separate Save page as option. The last option saves a webpage file, not a PDF.
First, find out where the failure is
A failed preview does not identify a single cause. The page’s styling or content, the browser, the operating system, a printer driver, or a missing or unavailable print destination could be involved. Before changing settings, try printing a different website or online document with the same browser and settings. Microsoft recommends this as the first diagnostic step in its Edge print troubleshooting guidance.

- Another page prints successfully: the original page’s graphics, fonts, code, or styling may be interfering with printing. Try a cleaner rendering or save route below.
- Other pages fail too: the issue is more likely in the browser or the wider print path. If you are trying to print to a physical printer, check whether another printer is available; for an intended PDF, try another browser route or the system print dialog.
These checks narrow the possibilities but do not prove the cause. Exact menus and available destinations can vary by browser version and device.

Print a cleaner version with Immersive Reader
- Open the page in Edge.
- If an Immersive Reader icon appears in the address bar, select it.
- From the simplified view, open the print command and try printing again, choosing a PDF destination if one is offered.
Immersive Reader can remove surrounding page clutter, which may help when the page’s design is the obstacle. It is not available for every website; Microsoft describes it as a workaround for eligible pages in its Edge printing instructions.

Open the system print dialog
If Edge’s preview is the part that fails, try the system dialog instead. In Edge, open the print menu and choose Print using system dialog. Microsoft documents the shortcuts as Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Option+Command+P on macOS. Choose a PDF destination in that dialog if one is available; the exact destinations depend on the device and its configuration.
Retry a failed preview
For an Edge “Print preview failed” error, Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps include cancelling and retrying with Ctrl+P or the page context menu, selecting the printer again, and restarting Edge. Microsoft also notes that preview can fail if Edge’s built-in PDF viewer is missing. That is one documented cause, not a diagnosis for every preview failure. Save as PDF or save the webpage in Chrome
Chrome on a computer: print to PDF
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open File > Print, or use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print dialog, choose a PDF destination if one is available, then save the file.
Google documents the desktop print workflow and shortcuts in Print from Chrome – Computer. If the PDF destination is missing, the options available depend on your operating system and setup; try the system print route or another browser rather than assuming the webpage itself is at fault.
Chrome on a computer: save a webpage file instead
If producing the PDF is the failing step, Chrome’s separate More > More tools > Save page as command can preserve the page as a webpage file. Reopen that saved file in a browser. It is not a paginated PDF, and Google’s instructions do not promise that every dynamic feature or remote resource will work offline. See Download a file – Computer.

Chrome on Android: save as PDF
- Open the webpage in Chrome and tap More > Share > Print.
- At the printer-selection step, select Save as PDF.
- Choose a destination and save.
This is Google’s documented Android route in Print from Chrome – Android.

Common problems and what to try
- Preview fails on one page: test another page. If that works, try Edge Immersive Reader when available, or Chrome’s Save page as route if a webpage file will do.
- Preview fails on every page in Edge: cancel and retry, reselect the destination, restart Edge, or open the system print dialog. Microsoft notes a missing built-in PDF viewer can be one cause of Edge preview failure.
- No PDF destination appears: use the system print dialog or another available browser route. The PDF destination depends on the operating system and configuration.
- The saved Chrome webpage does not work fully offline: Save page as retains a webpage file, but dynamic features or remote resources may not be available offline. Use PDF output when a static paginated document is the goal.
- Android steps differ from desktop: use Chrome’s More > Share > Print route, then choose Save as PDF.
