Playwright does not turn a screenshot into searchable text by itself. To preserve the captured pixels and make their text searchable, capture the page as an image, convert that image to PDF, then add an OCR text layer. If you want a PDF rendered from the webpage rather than a screenshot-faithful image, use Playwright’s page.pdf() instead.
Choose between a screenshot PDF and Playwright’s native PDF
The right method depends on whether the document must preserve the screenshot’s appearance or retain text rendered as webpage content.

Playwright documents page.screenshot() as image capture and page.pdf() as PDF rendering. Its PDF output uses print CSS by default; call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) first if the PDF should use screen media styles. See the Playwright Page API.

Make a searchable PDF that keeps the screenshot’s appearance
The pipeline has three distinct steps: capture an image, convert it to an image-only PDF, and run OCR to add searchable text. OCRmyPDF documents its role as adding a text layer to image PDFs; it does not change the fact that the page was captured as pixels. See the OCRmyPDF 13.5.0 documentation.

1. Capture the page with Playwright
Example using Playwright’s JavaScript API in an existing project with Playwright installed:

The example uses networkidle as a wait condition; for sites with ongoing network activity, select a more appropriate readiness condition or wait for a meaningful selector. Playwright’s screenshots guide documents saving screenshots to a path and the fullPage option for capturing the full scrollable page: Playwright Screenshots. Omit fullPage: true to capture only the viewport.
2. Convert the image to PDF and apply OCR
Use an image-to-PDF converter to create page-image.pdf from page.png, then run OCRmyPDF:

OCR is not guaranteed to identify every word correctly: small type, low contrast, complex layouts, or text rendered unusually can reduce recognition quality.
3. Check both the page image and the text layer
- Open the output PDF and check that the page image is present and visually legible.
- Search for several words visible in the page, including text near the top, middle, and bottom if it is a full-page capture.
- Select and copy a short passage, then inspect it for OCR substitutions or missing words.
Use Playwright’s native PDF when print rendering is acceptable
If you do not need a screenshot-faithful image and the site’s print layout is suitable, Playwright can generate the PDF directly:

The screenshot is incomplete or blank
Check that navigation completed and that the page had reached the content state you intended before capture. Some sites continue making network requests indefinitely, so networkidle may not be the right wait condition. Wait for a page-specific selector or another appropriate readiness signal before taking the screenshot.

The PDF looks like a webpage printout, not the screenshot
That is expected when using page.pdf(), which defaults to print CSS. For a screenshot-faithful artifact, capture with page.screenshot(), convert the image to PDF, and add OCR. If you still want native PDF output but need screen styling, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf().
The PDF looks right but search finds no text
An image-only PDF has no searchable text layer. Run OCRmyPDF on the image PDF and save to a separate output file, then test search and text selection in the resulting PDF.
Searchable text is wrong or incomplete
OCR recognizes text from pixels, so inspect the page at readable scale and check extracted words. If the image itself is blurry, tiny, or low contrast, correct capture quality where possible and rerun OCR; do not treat OCR output as guaranteed exact transcription.

Does fullPage: true make the screenshot searchable?
No. It requests capture of the full scrollable page; searchability requires a text layer, such as one added by OCR.
