Keep both files with the exact page URL and capture date and time, inspect the PDF for missing content, and store a separate backup. These files record what you captured; they do not by themselves prove who published the page or guarantee that a court will accept it.
Capture the page and its context
- Open the exact page. Make the relevant content and identifying details visible. For a long page, expand comments or other material that matters. Preserve enough surrounding content to give the capture context; use several screenshots rather than cropping away relevant information. Tech Safety Canada recommends retaining the full relevant page, URL, and capture date and time: Preserving websites as digital evidence.
- Take and retain a screenshot. Save the screenshot as it was captured. Keep the original file rather than editing or overwriting it. If the page is longer than the screen, take a sequence that covers the relevant content.
- Print the page to PDF. In the browser, open Print (or press Ctrl+P on a compatible desktop browser), select Save as PDF, and save the file. If the print dialog offers headers and footers, enable them so the PDF can include the page link and date.
- Check the saved PDF. Open it and compare it with the page. Print-to-PDF may omit parts of a webpage; if material is missing, adjust the print settings or supplement the PDF with additional screenshots or printed pages.
- Keep the records together. Save the exact URL, capture date and time, and, if useful, the page title alongside the screenshot and PDF. Keep the original files intact and make a separate backup in a secure location, such as an external drive.
What each file preserves—and what it may miss
A screenshot shows how the page appeared in the captured view. A PDF is a convenient, printable version of the page, but its layout or completeness can differ from the live site. Keeping both gives you complementary records, not a guarantee that every element or all context has been preserved.

When a webpage copy may help
If you need more than the printed view, you can also save the webpage or its HTML. Locally saved pages may have broken components, so check the copy rather than assuming it works. Tech Safety Canada suggests taking a screenshot of the saved HTML before downloading it as a backup: its preservation guidance.

If someone may monitor your device or cloud account, saved evidence could reveal that you are preserving it. Consider whether a safer device or account and specialized support are appropriate before saving or backing up files.

Keep the capture in perspective
A screenshot or PDF records content visible to you; it does not automatically establish who created or published the page, whether the page was authentic, or whether the capture will be accepted in a legal proceeding. Tech Safety Canada notes that website evidence for court may require authentication and that screenshots may not be sufficient in every circumstance. An Arizona Courts-hosted reference discusses webpage attribution and Internet Archive evidence, but it is specific to that jurisdiction and is not a universal rule: Best Practices for Authenticating Digital Evidence. For an actual case, preserve the originals and details of how you captured them, then check local rules or consult a lawyer.
