OBS requires you to turn off outputs before changing Video settings, so lowering the stream resolution through the documented method interrupts the feed. For a 24/7 channel, schedule and test a brief maintenance transition rather than expecting a seamless change.
Which OBS resolution setting should you change?
For the usual goal—sending a lower-resolution picture to YouTube without rearranging your scenes—change Output (Scaled) Resolution in Settings > Video. OBS scales the composition to this resolution for the stream or recording. For example, a 1080p source layout can be sent at 720p. OBS’s overview guide distinguishes the output resolution from the canvas used to arrange sources.

Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at the size that suits your scene layout unless you have a separate reason to change it. The canvas is the workspace in which sources are positioned and fitted. Changing it can require resizing or realigning sources; changing Output (Scaled) Resolution does not have that same layout effect. OBS cautions that lowering the canvas is generally for cases where GPU resources are severely constrained. See OBS’s resolution guidance.

Why the change cannot be seamless in the documented workflow
When an output is active, OBS displays this warning in Video settings: “Video output is currently active. Please turn off any outputs to change video settings.” The supported workflow therefore requires stopping the output, changing the Video setting, and starting the output again. The warning is part of OBS Studio’s interface text.

Do not treat YouTube transcoding or OBS reconnect behavior as a way to keep the source feed uninterrupted during that change. YouTube can create multiple viewer playback formats from an incoming stream, but that does not keep OBS connected while its output is stopped. Official guidance does not guarantee that stopping and restarting OBS preserves the same YouTube live event or viewer session. YouTube’s live encoder guidance and OBS’s streaming guidance describe transcoding and streaming, not a seamless Video-tab change.
Plan a resolution change for a 24/7 channel
- Choose the new output resolution and test it first. In a non-production test, check representative motion and audio, and make sure the intended resolution and other output settings work reliably on your system and connection. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Read YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Prepare the production change. Pick a maintenance window, tell viewers if appropriate, and have your target setting ready. If you need to move between known configurations, create an OBS Profile in advance: profiles can save Stream, Video, and Output settings, but not Scenes. Switching profiles does not remove the active-output restriction. OBS explains profiles here.
- Stop the OBS output. End the active output using the controls for your current stream setup. Expect the YouTube feed to be interrupted while OBS is stopped.
- Set the output resolution. In OBS, open Settings > Video, change Output (Scaled) Resolution to the chosen value, and leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged unless you intend to alter the composition.
- Restart and verify. Start the output again using your normal streaming workflow. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that the incoming stream is at the intended resolution. Do not assume the previous live event or viewer session has been preserved.
If resolution is not the only way to reduce system load

The actual performance and visual result depend on your computer, encoder, connection, and stream content; test changes before applying them to a continuous broadcast. OBS notes that 60 fps can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps. OBS’s overview guide covers resolution and frame-rate considerations.

YouTube settings and stream health to keep in mind
- Choose a quality your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing the stream before starting and monitoring stream-health messages while live. YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Viewer quality options are separate from your active OBS settings. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams into different output formats for viewers, but this does not avoid the interruption required to change OBS’s Video settings. YouTube’s guidance; OBS’s transcoding guide.
- Use a secure ingest protocol where your setup supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. This is a transport recommendation, not a way to change resolution without stopping the OBS output. YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Troubleshooting
OBS will not let me edit Video settings
An output is still active. Stop the output before editing settings in Settings > Video; the warning explicitly requires this. If you expected a profile switch to bypass the restriction, it does not.

Check whether you changed Base (Canvas) Resolution instead of Output (Scaled) Resolution. The canvas controls source layout, so changing it can require realignment. Restore the intended canvas size and inspect the scene sources before restarting.

The computer still struggles after lowering resolution
Test lowering frame rate as another performance lever; OBS identifies a change from 60 fps to 30 fps as an example. Check the result with representative content before using it on the 24/7 feed. Avoid lowering the canvas unless the resource constraint warrants the extra scene-layout work.
YouTube shows a stream-health issue after restart
Review YouTube’s health messages, confirm that OBS is sending the expected output, and check that your connection can sustain the selected quality. YouTube advises monitoring health during the event; its guidance does not promise that a restarted encoder rejoins the same live event or viewer session.
