Then open that link and check that the text and resources you need are actually there. For anything important, save a separate local copy too: a Wayback snapshot is not a full-site backup, and a capture can be incomplete.
Save a page to the Wayback Machine
- Open Save Page Now and enter the precise URL of the page you want to preserve.
- Submit it and wait for the capture to finish. The Internet Archive describes the action simply: “Put a URL into the form, press the button, and we save the page.” The feature captures one page, including its images and CSS when available, and returns a permanent URL.
- Open the returned archive link. Check the visible text, images, and any linked or interactive content you need. Record omissions rather than assuming the capture is complete.
- Save the returned URL alongside the original. When citing or sharing the page, include the archive URL and capture date or timestamp so someone else can identify the version you mean.
A submission is not a crawl of the entire site: it does not automatically preserve outlinks or future versions. If you need other pages, submit them separately and verify each capture.

Keep a local copy of important material
A hosted archive is useful for a shareable reference; a local copy gives you a copy to manage independently. For critical material, use both where copyright and access rules allow. The right local format depends on what must survive:

- Export or save the content if preserving the text is the priority.
- Take a screenshot when visual layout or a particular on-screen state matters.
- Keep a transcript or notes for essential wording, context, or details that a capture might miss.
Store the copy somewhere you can find later and retain its source URL and capture date. A screenshot preserves appearance, not necessarily searchable text, linked resources, or interactive behavior; choose a second format if those matter.

Choose a method for the job

Compare options by whether you need public sharing, local control, complete capture, multiple pages, or repeatable collection. Check what the archived page actually contains
A saved page can look intact at first while important pieces are missing. Open the archived URL and verify the content you care about directly:

- Confirm the main text and images appear.
- Open important links and check whether they lead to the archived version you intended, rather than another capture or the live web.
- Check the timestamp in the archive URL. A displayed page may not include every linked resource from that same date.
- Test interactive elements only if they matter to your purpose; a snapshot may not preserve server-dependent features or dynamic behavior.
- Note any gaps in your local record, especially if you plan to cite or rely on the capture later.
Internet Archive warns that when an archived site is incomplete, navigation can fall back to a nearby capture or even the live site. For an important linked document or subpage, preserve and verify that URL separately rather than assuming it belongs to the same snapshot.
Why a capture may be missing or incomplete
- The site blocks or excludes it: crawler restrictions, access controls, technical or security settings, or a site owner’s exclusion request can prevent capture or later access.
- The page depends on scripts or a server: dynamic JavaScript and server-dependent functions may not work in an archived copy.
- Resources did not save: images, CSS, and linked files can be absent even when the page itself has an archive URL.
- The page is difficult to discover: pages not reachable through links may not be captured as part of broader archiving.
- The archive’s policies affect availability: a previously saved page may later become unavailable.
Do not treat a successful submission as a guarantee of completeness or everyday, indefinite availability. The Aarhus University tutorial, revised April 16, 2026, recommends keeping local copies alongside Save Page Now; the Digital Preservation Coalition also recommends multiple preservation methods for critical material.

Use browser tools or a screenshot API when they fit
The official Wayback browser extension is a convenient way to check for existing snapshots or save while browsing, but it does not change the underlying one-page scope or guarantee a complete capture. Legal and evidentiary use
An ordinary Wayback snapshot is not automatically authenticated evidence. The Internet Archive says the service was not expressly designed for legal use and directs users to its affidavit procedure. If a capture matters to a legal dispute, follow that procedure and seek appropriate legal advice rather than relying on an ordinary archive link alone.
