Add the right capture and audio sources, verify the output settings against your streaming platform and network, and make a short test before going public. Treat the wizard as a starting point—not a promise that any PC can stream any game at any resolution or frame rate.
1. Prepare Windows 11 and check GPU routing
Install available Windows updates and graphics-driver updates through your usual system or hardware-vendor update process. An update may address a specific compatibility issue, but it is not a guaranteed performance boost.
Choose graphics preferences when an app has a GPU problem
Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game or OBS, choose Options, and set the preferred graphics option available on your PC, such as Power saving or High performance. Restart the affected app after changing its preference. Windows’ per-app controls are particularly relevant on systems with more than one GPU.
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, check both OBS and the game. OBS warns that Game Capture can fail when OBS runs on the integrated GPU while the game uses the discrete GPU. Assigning both apps to a compatible GPU can help resolve that mismatch; it is not a universal performance setting, so check capture and game performance after the change. Know what windowed-game optimization does
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations apply to compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. The game must be restarted after changing the setting. This is not a general fix for every game, graphics API, capture method, or blank capture. Microsoft’s scope and steps are in Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.
2. Build an OBS baseline
OBS Studio supports Windows 11, but compatibility alone does not establish that a computer can stream or record a particular game, output resolution, frame rate, or scene. OBS lists system requirements and makes the same distinction in its System Requirements.
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Open OBS and choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Answer the prompts for your intended use and stream or recording priorities. The wizard considers intended use, computer resources, and network conditions to choose a baseline.
- Apply its recommendations, then review them in OBS rather than assuming they suit every game or service. A platform’s current ingest requirements and your upload capacity still matter.
The wizard is a practical first configuration, not a guarantee of smooth output. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before a real session.

Add the capture source that matches the content
- Game Capture: use for compatible 3D games; OBS documents this source for Windows.
- Window Capture: use when you want a particular application window.
- Display Capture: use when the full desktop or display is the intended source.
- Video Capture Device: use for a webcam or capture card. A capture card is relevant when bringing in console or other external video, not required for PC game capture or a webcam-only scene.
Check the preview before proceeding: it should show the intended image, not a black frame, the wrong window, or an unintended part of the desktop.

Speak into the microphone and watch the audio mixer meters. If the wrong microphone or desktop audio is active, open Settings → Audio and select the intended devices. Confirm that the microphone meter responds and that desktop audio behaves as expected before a live session.
Review output settings and test
Open Settings → Output and check the selected encoder and output configuration. There is no universally correct bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval established here: follow the current requirements for your chosen streaming service and stay within what your network and PC can sustain. No current platform-specific limits are established here, so do not rely on a generic preset as a substitute for checking the destination’s official guidance.

Before broadcasting publicly, make a short recording or private/test stream. Confirm that the captured picture and sound are correct and look at OBS’s statistics during the test. OBS’s official guidance encourages a short test rather than jumping straight into a first stream.
3. Choose an encoder and tune only when needed
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding when an appropriate encoder is available: dedicated GPU encoding hardware can take encoding work off the CPU. That does not mean it has no performance cost or will be best for every combination of GPU load, game, output settings, and scene. Compare the available options against CPU headroom, GPU load, target quality, and the streaming platform’s current supported settings. See OBS Hardware Encoding.

If rendering or encoding struggles, open OBS’s statistics and review its logs, then change one setting at a time and repeat the test. CPU demand varies with encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; lowering or changing one of these may help, but measure the result rather than applying a blanket preset.

4. Keep Windows gaming features in context
Leave Windows Game Mode enabled as the baseline. OBS’s Windows gaming-features guidance does not call for disabling it pre-emptively. If OBS reports a hardware-encoding conflict, investigate whether Game DVR/Captures or another capture or encoding application is using the same resources, then retest. The OBS troubleshooting page discusses Windows 10 version 1809 or later; it should not be read as a Windows 11 performance benchmark. See Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting.
Optional features are not universal streaming optimizations
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is limited to eligible devices and games, with requirements including supported Copilot+ PC processor families or a supported handheld use case, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, compatible display resolution, current drivers, and DirectX/game-format restrictions. It is an upscaling feature, not a general-purpose switch that guarantees a better stream. Check Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution requirements before relying on it.
Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. The described startup behavior that reduces background processes applies to gaming handhelds; the feature is a controller-focused gaming interface, not an essential desktop-streaming optimization. 5. Use Xbox Game Bar for clips, not as a substitute for an OBS setup
For a quick gameplay or app recording, Xbox Game Bar provides a simpler option: press Win + Alt + R to start recording and Win + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. Microsoft documents these shortcuts in Use a screen reader to record your screen with Xbox Game Bar.
That clip workflow is distinct from a configurable live stream. OBS supports scenes, multiple sources, output configuration, and streaming controls, so use it when you need to compose and send a live program rather than simply save a local clip.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
