These records help document what you observed; no capture method guarantees a perfect reproduction or, by itself, proves legal admissibility.
Capture the page before it changes
Open the page in the state that matters and save it promptly. Artwork, layout, and embedded resources can change independently, and a later archive crawl may capture a different version—or none at all.

- Copy the full URL, including query parameters that distinguish the page. Note any redirects and the final URL shown by the browser.
- Record the capture time in UTC. Also note the browser or capture tool, who made the capture, and any relevant conditions, such as a login wall or unusual rendering.
- Save a full-page screenshot or PDF if the visual presentation matters. Include surrounding text, labels, captions, disclaimers, and other context needed to understand the artwork.
- When the stakes justify it, save the page data or create an archive capture as well. A screenshot preserves pixels, not the underlying page structure or every resource.
- Keep the original files unchanged and make a simple manifest listing the URL, UTC time, method and tool, operator, filenames, and known limitations.
Choose what to preserve
Different records answer different questions. A screenshot shows how the page appeared in the captured view; saved page files or a web archive may retain more of its structure and resources. None necessarily preserves every interaction or externally loaded element.

Check the Wayback Machine for another copy
An independent archive can provide a useful second path, but confirm that the exact URL has a snapshot and that it is accessible. The Internet Archive’s availability API returns the closest snapshot when one is available; it can also return no snapshot if none is archived or currently accessible. Save the archived URL and the timestamp displayed with that capture alongside your own files. Treat it as a separate capture, not proof that every resource or interactive behavior survived. Keep provenance and make later checks possible
Use a manifest stored with the capture files. For example:

Known limitations: [for example, embedded video not captured]For WARC-based preservation, the International Internet Preservation Consortium’s guidelines address identifying records by target URI and timestamp, assigning unique record identifiers, and recording processing context and provenance (IIPC WARC guidelines). A hash can help detect later changes to a file only if you retain the hash and a sound process for checking it. A timestamp or hash does not independently establish who created a capture or when.

Protect sensitive material before using a hosted service
Check whether a capture service makes submitted pages or saved records public, how long it retains them, and whether you can control access. As one vendor-specific example, Kiroku says its free saves create public URLs that may be indexed and offers a private option; confirm its current policy before submitting anything sensitive (Kiroku). Avoid uploading confidential or access-restricted material to a service unless its terms and privacy controls are suitable.

What a webpage capture can—and cannot—establish
A capture can help show what a particular browser or service displayed at a recorded time. Its value depends on the record, its provenance, and the question being asked. The sources cited here do not establish that a screenshot, archive copy, timestamp, or hash alone proves legal admissibility or is sufficient for chain of custody.
