Microsoft Edge documents adding the current date and page number, but not the URL; Chrome’s and Firefox’s help pages describe PDF and header/footer controls without promising a particular date-and-URL layout. A print date is the date you printed the page, not its publication or update date.
Save a webpage as a PDF with its date and URL
- Open the webpage in a desktop browser and open its print dialog.
- Choose a PDF destination, such as Save as PDF or Save to PDF.
- Enable the browser’s header/footer option if available. Inspect the preview to see whether it actually includes the URL and date you need.
- Check the page layout, then save the PDF. Open the saved file and confirm the details survived.
These browser instructions were checked on October 3, 2026; interface labels and availability can change. A current date printed by the browser identifies when you printed the page, not when the page was published or updated. If that date matters, preserve the page’s own visible publication or update date and label it separately.

Chrome: use print preview and verify the fields
- Open the page in Chrome and press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- Choose Save as PDF as the destination and set any other print options you need.
- Expand additional settings and look for Headers and footers. Check the preview for both the date and URL before saving.
- Save the PDF, then open it to confirm the fields appear as expected.
Google’s instructions document the print and Save as PDF workflow, but do not specify the exact header/footer fields. The preview and saved PDF—not the presence of a setting alone—are the test. Google Chrome Help: Print from Chrome.

- Open the page’s print dialog and select Save to PDF in the destination or printer dropdown.
- Expand More settings. Firefox lists paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, format, two-sided printing, print headers and footers, and print backgrounds.
- Enable Print headers and footers, then inspect the preview for the exact date and URL fields.
- Save and verify the resulting PDF.

Microsoft Edge: print the current date, then verify the URL
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. Alternatively, choose Settings and more > Print.
- Open More settings and enable Headers and footers.
- Inspect the preview. Microsoft says this option adds the current date to the document header and the page number to the footer; its instructions do not confirm that the URL is included.
- Save the PDF and check the file itself for the URL. If it is missing, use another method below or ensure the page’s URL is preserved elsewhere in the document.
Edge also documents scale, backgrounds, and preview controls. Its Immersive Reader can provide a clutter-free printing route, though Microsoft notes it may not be available for every website. Microsoft Support: Print in Microsoft Edge.
Check the PDF before relying on it
- Date meaning: Treat a browser-inserted current date as the print date. Preserve any webpage publication or revision date as separate page content when that is what you need.
- URL presence: Do not assume a headers-and-footers switch adds a URL. Check the preview and saved output, especially in Edge, whose cited instructions confirm the current date and page number but not URL insertion.
- Page layout: Review page count, clipping, scale, and margins. Firefox exposes scale and margin controls; Edge documents scale and backgrounds.
- Images and backgrounds: Check that important images or background content remain visible in the PDF. Adjust print-background settings if the browser offers them.
- Clutter: Try Firefox’s Simplified format where available or Edge Immersive Reader where supported. Check how either changes the content before saving.
When you need a custom header or footer
If browser-generated fields do not provide the title, URL, and date arrangement you need, a PDF editor’s web-to-PDF controls may offer more customization. Adobe documents settings for placing a title or URL in headers and a URL plus download date/time in footers. The PDF has a date but no URL
Header/footer behavior is browser-dependent. Check the preview and saved file rather than assuming the option includes both fields. Edge’s documented option specifies the current date and page number, not the URL. Try another browser or a PDF editor with custom web-to-PDF settings if the URL must appear in a header or footer.
The date looks wrong for your purpose
A browser header may show the current print date. It does not establish the page’s publication or update date. Keep the page’s own date visible and identify it clearly as the page date.

Text or images are clipped or missing
Inspect the preview, adjust scale or margins, and check background printing. If a clutter-free mode changes or removes content, switch back to the original format and verify again.
The page breaks in an awkward place
Review page count and scale in print preview, adjust margins or paper size where offered, and recheck the output before sharing it.

Windows and macOS PDF printing
Windows 10 and macOS include built-in ways to print to PDF, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The exact destination and menu labels vary by operating system and app version; select the PDF destination shown in your print dialog and inspect the resulting document.
