To save a webpage as a PDF, use the browser’s Print dialog and choose its PDF destination. Developer Tools do not create the PDF by themselves: they help you preview and adjust print-specific styling. For repeatable Chrome automation, use the DevTools Protocol’s Page.printToPDF method or Chrome Headless.
Save a webpage as a PDF in the browser
- Open the webpage and choose Print from the browser menu, or use the print shortcut. Microsoft Edge documents Ctrl+P on Windows and Command+P on Mac; shortcuts may differ by browser and platform. (Microsoft Edge printing)
- Inspect the print preview. Choose a PDF destination rather than a physical printer. Firefox explicitly labels its option “Save to PDF.” (Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide)
- If the page is clipped or breaks awkwardly, adjust paper size, orientation, scale, margins, page range, or background graphics where those controls are available. Review the updated preview.
- Save the PDF to your chosen location. No printer or paper is needed to create the file.
Printed pages can look different from the screen because websites may apply print-specific CSS. Always check the preview before saving or sharing. (Mozilla Support)

Use Developer Tools to inspect print styling
Edge DevTools can emulate the print CSS media type so you can see the layout the browser will use for printing. This is a preview and debugging workflow; after inspecting or changing styles, return to the browser’s print interface to make the PDF.

- Right-click the page and select Inspect to open DevTools. (Edge DevTools overview)
- If needed, open Quick View, then select More tools > Rendering.
- In Rendering, find Emulate CSS media type and select
print. The page switches to its print-media styles. (Edge print preview documentation) - Use the Elements panel to inspect and edit relevant styles while viewing the print rendering.
- When finished, set the media type back to No emulation to restore screen styling, then open Print and save the PDF.
This is most useful when you are debugging a page you maintain or diagnosing why a page’s print layout differs from its on-screen appearance. DevTools edits are not a substitute for the print dialog’s output controls.

Adjust the PDF when the preview is wrong
Layout, scaling, and page breaks
Try a different paper size or orientation, then tune scale and margins. If only some pages are needed, set a page range in the print dialog when the browser offers that control. The available settings vary by browser and operating system, so rely on the current preview rather than assuming identical menus everywhere. (Firefox printing controls; Edge printing controls)
Colored backgrounds are missing
In Edge, open More settings and enable Background graphics when you want background colors or images included. Check the preview because omitting backgrounds can change the visual result. (Microsoft Support)

The page contains navigation or clutter
For supported sites, Edge’s Immersive Reader or Firefox’s Simplified format may offer a less cluttered printout. Availability depends on the site and browser. Mozilla also points to the optional Print Edit WE extension for editing content before printing; the normal PDF workflow does not require an extension. (Edge printing; Firefox printing)
Only part of the page is needed

Automate PDF output with Chrome
Chrome DevTools Protocol
For software that controls Chrome through the DevTools Protocol, call Page.printToPDF. The method supports print settings including paper-related options, scale, margins, landscape orientation, and header and footer display or templates. For a simple command-line capture, Chrome documents --headless with --print-to-pdf. The output file is output.pdf in the current working directory:

Common problems and fixes
- The PDF still looks unlike the screen: inspect the print preview and use Edge’s print-media emulation to check whether print CSS hides or rearranges content.
- The background is absent: enable Background graphics in Edge’s More settings if the page’s background should print.
- The automated PDF misses late content: increase Chrome Headless’s timeout or use its virtual time budget as appropriate, then account for any site-specific loading or interactions. A fixed delay is not proof that all content is ready.
- DevTools changes do not appear in the saved PDF: confirm that you printed after making or testing the style changes. DevTools emulation is for inspection; the browser’s print workflow produces the file.
