VLC can process and stream prerecorded files, but there is no verified, universal VLC click-by-click recipe for rotating a video and sending it to YouTube Live. Rotation must be applied to the video signal in VLC’s stream-output path—not just to the preview—and the chosen output must connect using a YouTube-supported ingest protocol. Set up a private or unlisted rehearsal, then confirm the orientation in YouTube’s Live Control Room before going public.
What the setup involves
VLC’s stream-output pipeline can process media, apply audio or video filters during transcoding, and send output over a network. YouTube Live accepts an encoder feed configured with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Those documented capabilities do not, by themselves, confirm a specific VLC interface or command that will rotate and deliver a working YouTube stream on every operating system or VLC build. See VLC stream output and VLC transcoding.

The key distinction is where the rotation happens. Rotating the VLC preview window changes how you see playback; it does not prove that the transmitted, encoded picture is rotated. The correction needs to be present in the stream-output processing, and you must verify it in YouTube’s ingest preview.
Prepare the video and YouTube stream
Check the source file
- Play the file in VLC and identify the required orientation: for example, portrait footage that should remain portrait, or sideways footage that needs a quarter-turn.
- Check that the file’s audio and video play correctly before configuring output. If the source has no audio, do not assume that adding an audio track is necessary.
- Choose the intended output resolution and frame rate based on the source and your upload capacity. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution file merely to select a larger stream setting.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s settings. Enter them only in the encoder configuration; a stream key is a credential, so do not expose it in screenshots, public examples, or command histories.
- Use the ingest URL and protocol available for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option. Do not assume a VLC build supports the particular RTMPS address or authentication method just because VLC can stream to network destinations in general. Confirm that the VLC output module you choose can use the exact URL and key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, live stream settings, and RTMPS setup.
Apply rotation in VLC’s stream output
VLC documentation describes filtering as part of a transcoding and stream-output pipeline, but the official material reviewed does not establish a current, tested transform-filter option or an identical graphical route across VLC versions and operating systems. Treat the exact filter name, placement, and output-module configuration as build-dependent. Do not rely on a preview-only rotation control as proof that the encoded feed is corrected.

- In the VLC version you are using, configure a stream-output/transcoding path for the prerecorded file rather than only opening it for local playback.
- In that output path, identify the video-filter or transform option that applies the needed rotation to the outgoing video. If your VLC interface does not expose a supported output filter, or you cannot confirm that the filter is applied before encoding, do not assume a local display adjustment will carry into the stream.
- Configure the output to send to the YouTube stream URL using the stream key, but proceed only if the output module supports the selected ingest protocol. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS; compatibility with a particular VLC build must be checked rather than presumed.
- Start output for a rehearsal and inspect both VLC’s output, where available, and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm the transmitted image—not just VLC’s local window—has the right orientation and aspect ratio.
For encoder settings, YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingest options, up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval without exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include the following settings; they are recommendations, not guarantees, and should be rechecked against the live documentation when publishing. YouTube’s encoder settings also explain the available settings and ingest guidance.
| Output format | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a rate your upstream connection can sustain. A setting that exceeds available upload capacity can produce a less stable feed; resolution, frame rate, codec and network conditions all matter.

Loop a playlist with VLC
VLC’s VideoLAN Media Library (VLM) documentation describes broadcast media configured with a list of inputs and an output. It supports sequential playback through those inputs and a loop option that restarts the list after the final item. This is VLM functionality; a normal graphical playlist’s repeat control should not be assumed to behave identically in the stream-output path. Consult the VLC VLM documentation for the manager syntax and configuration details.
Before relying on a loop for a long broadcast, rehearse the end of one file and the transition to the next. Check for gaps, unexpected audio changes, aspect-ratio shifts, and whether rotation remains correct for every item. A filter that works for one file may not be appropriate for another with a different orientation.

Rehearse and verify before going public
- Use a private or unlisted rehearsal when appropriate, and include motion and audio similar to the intended broadcast.
- Wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check that the picture is rotated correctly, fills the intended frame without unintended cropping, and that audio is present and synchronized.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the audio/video quality during the rehearsal. If the stream is scheduled, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control when that workflow requires it; starting the encoder alone may not publish the scheduled event.
- Confirm that a playlist advances and loops as intended, then test recovery by checking that the feed remains usable after a normal file transition. Do not make a public start contingent on a configuration that has not been validated.
YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking preview, stream health, and audio/video quality. Its live-streaming tips provide additional guidance.
Troubleshooting
- YouTube shows the original sideways picture: VLC may have rotated only the local preview, or the filter may not be in the transmitted output path. Inspect the YouTube preview and verify that the selected stream-output/transcoding configuration applies the transform before encoding.
- VLC connects locally but YouTube receives no feed: Check the exact stream URL, key, and selected protocol. Confirm the VLC output module can connect to that URL and supports the ingest protocol; do not treat general network streaming as proof of RTMPS compatibility.
- The YouTube preview appears but the event is not public: For scheduled streams, check the Live Control Room and use its Go live control when required by the event workflow.
- The picture buffers or stream health is poor: Compare the configured bitrate with the published recommendation for your resolution and frame rate, then ensure your available upload capacity can sustain it. Lower output demands if the connection cannot reliably carry the selected settings.
- The image is cropped or has the wrong shape: Recheck the source orientation and output aspect ratio in the transmitted preview. Rotation can change the relationship between width and height; do not judge framing from VLC’s preview alone.
- The stream stops between playlist items: Check how the files are sequenced in the actual stream-output/VLM configuration. VLM documents sequential inputs and looping, but ordinary playlist repeat behavior is not a substitute for validating the broadcast path.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming prerecorded material, confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast its video and audio on YouTube. A file playing correctly in VLC does not establish permission to stream it. Also consider whether the channel’s use of reused material complies with YouTube’s applicable monetization and channel policies; technical availability of a live stream is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does VLC’s regular rotate control guarantee that YouTube receives a rotated video?
No. You must verify the orientation in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview; a change to VLC’s local display is not proof that the stream output is rotated.
Can VLC loop more than one prerecorded file in a broadcast?
VLC’s VLM documentation describes sequential broadcast inputs and a loop option. Validate the actual stream-output configuration rather than assuming the graphical playlist repeat control behaves the same way.
