PowerPoint has no “Save As Word” option. The built-in route is File > Export > Create Handouts, which sends your slides to Microsoft Word as a handout. Microsoft’s support article Edit or print PowerPoint handouts in Word says the result “opens as a Word document in a new window. You can edit, print or save as with any Word document.”
This is a handout, not a full conversion. Slides arrive in a chosen layout, optionally with speaker notes. Don’t expect every animation, shape or object to become native, freely editable Word content.

Steps to export a presentation to Word
Microsoft documents these steps for the desktop versions of PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
- Select File > Export.
- Under Export, select Create Handouts, then select Create Handouts again.
- In the Send to Microsoft Word dialog, choose a page layout.
- Choose Paste or Paste Link, then confirm with OK.
The presentation then opens as a Word document in a new window. Edit, print or save it like any other Word file, for example with File > Save As in Word.

Paste or Paste Link?
| Option | What happens | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Paste | Creates a standalone copy. Microsoft says it stays unchanged when the PowerPoint source is updated. | You are finalizing a handout, sharing the Word file, or editing it heavily. |
| Paste Link | Intended to reflect updates made to the original presentation in the Word document. | The deck is still changing and the handout should follow it. |
Choosing a layout
The layout decides what your Word document looks like, so pick it before you confirm.
- Notes next to slides and Notes below slides include your speaker notes with each slide. Use these if you want notes in Word.
- 3 Slides puts three slides on a page with lines beside them for audience note-taking.
If you only need printed notes and no Word file, skip the export. Use File > Print and choose Notes Pages. Microsoft says each printed page can hold one slide and its notes.

Adjusting handout formatting
To control how the handout is laid out, go to View > Handout Master in PowerPoint. Microsoft documents controls there for slides per page, orientation, slide size, headers, footers, background and font. Preview the handout before printing.

If the export fails or stalls
Microsoft notes that this export uses a lot of memory. Large decks with many images are the usual trouble spot.
Rank #3
- “PowerPoint couldn’t write to Microsoft Word” error: restart the computer, then reopen only PowerPoint and try again.
- A very large deck still won’t export fully: save a copy of the presentation and delete the slides that already exported. Export the remainder, then combine the two Word files.
Where it works
Microsoft’s instructions cover desktop PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and the 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 versions. The articles don’t establish that Create Handouts to Word exists in PowerPoint for the web. If you work in a browser, open the file in the desktop app for this task.

Exporting doesn’t produce an accessible document by itself. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance uses Notes below slides with Paste so slide images appear in Word. After exporting, add slide titles as headings and add alternative text to each slide image so screen-reader users can navigate the file.
