How do I sandbox AI agents so failures cannot reach production systems? Put the agent’s code and tools in isolated, task-scoped compute, and keep production credentials, deployment authority, approvals, and audit controls in a trusted service outside that environment. Then restrict network access and verify those boundaries with tests that try to cross them. A sandbox helps contain mistakes and prompt injection; it is not a substitute for access control, review, or a separately protected deployment pipeline.

What does sandboxing an AI agent actually protect?

An agent can exercise the authority its environment gives it. OpenAI’s Sandbox security documentation puts the principle plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” A mistaken command, compromised dependency, or instruction hidden in external content can therefore have consequences well beyond the agent’s intended task if the execution environment can reach sensitive resources.

Sandboxing means running model-directed work—such as reading and editing files, executing shell commands, installing packages, or creating artifacts—in a constrained environment that does not have a direct path to production systems. The important word is direct: the trusted orchestration layer may still approve a narrowly defined request or pass a reviewed artifact to another system, but the sandbox itself should not be able to authenticate to production, deploy code, or freely connect to internal services.

Think of each mount, environment variable, exposed port, network route, identity, and tool as a grant of authority. If a task does not need one, do not expose it. A sandbox that can read a production key or call a deployment API is not meaningfully isolated from the consequences of using that key or API, even if its filesystem is otherwise separate.

Which responsibilities belong outside the sandbox?

Separate the trusted harness—the orchestration and control plane—from sandbox compute. OpenAI’s “Sandbox Agents” guide describes this division: the harness handles trusted responsibilities while the sandbox performs model-directed work in an isolated Unix-like workspace. In practice, put authentication, tool routing, policy checks, approvals, audit logs, human review, recovery state, and decisions about which artifacts leave the environment in the harness or in other trusted services.

The sandbox should receive only the files and capabilities needed to do its assigned work. It can return a patch, test output, or other artifact for inspection. It should not be the component that decides whether its own request is authorized, grants itself broader credentials, or deploys its result to production.

  • Trusted harness: owns identities, validates tool requests, applies authorization rules, records events, obtains approval where required, and controls what enters or leaves the sandbox.
  • Sandbox compute: runs commands and code, works against a bounded workspace, and produces outputs without production authority by default.
  • Independent deployment path: verifies and authorizes changes outside the agent’s execution environment. A successful agent run is not deployment approval.

This separation also makes recovery clearer. A run can be stopped, its credentials revoked, and its workspace discarded without handing the agent control over the systems responsible for those actions.

How do you define the production boundary?

Before choosing a sandbox runtime, list the resources that would cause material harm if an agent could read or change them. Include production databases, customer data, deployment pipelines, cloud control planes, signing keys, administrative APIs, and internal services—not just the production application itself. Decide which actions are read-only, write-capable, or irreversible, and assign approval requirements accordingly.

Express that boundary in infrastructure and tool implementations. A prompt saying “do not deploy” is not an authorization control. If the sandbox can reach a deployment endpoint with a usable identity, malicious or mistaken instructions may still cause a deployment. If the harness exposes a tool that can trigger one, the harness must enforce policy before executing the request.

  • Identify production and sensitive resources, including indirect paths such as build systems and cloud administration APIs.
  • Inventory every tool the agent can invoke and the identity each tool uses.
  • Mark which operations can read data, change state, send data externally, or cause irreversible effects.
  • Decide which resources the task genuinely needs, and which must remain inaccessible even if the model requests them.

How should you build a task-scoped workspace?

Start each task with a defined workspace contract: the input files it may see, the output location it may write to, and the commands or tools it may use. OpenAI’s sandbox guidance describes manifests and mounts as ways to specify workspace contents and artifacts as outputs another system can review. A useful default is a fresh workspace per task, with only necessary source files and data mounted into it.

  1. Prepare inputs in a trusted service. Select the specific repository content or data needed for the task. Do not mount a broad home directory, host filesystem, or shared folder merely because it is convenient.
  2. Mount inputs narrowly. Prefer read-only mounts for source material that the agent needs to inspect but should not alter. If the task requires edits, provide a separate writable working copy.
  3. Separate outputs. Give the agent a bounded output location for patches, generated files, or test results. Treat everything returned from that location as untrusted until inspected.
  4. Review before promotion. Have a trusted system or reviewer check the artifact before copying it into a trusted repository, build pipeline, or deployment process.
  5. Clean up deliberately. Set a lifecycle for the workspace and any retained state. Preserve only what is needed for review or resumability, and avoid leaving a reusable environment with credentials or data from a completed task.

OpenAI characterizes its sandbox model as a flexible Unix-like environment with a filesystem, shell, installed packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots, and controlled external access. Those capabilities are useful, but each is part of the attack surface. Enable a port, persistent workspace, package installation, or external connection only when the task needs it, and define its scope before execution.

How do you stop network access from becoming a production path?

Restrict outbound traffic independently of filesystem isolation. Begin with no broad internet or internal-network access, then allow only the approved destinations and protocols the task requires. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance supports egress allowlisting and routing third-party access through a trusted proxy or server that can add scoped credentials outside the sandbox.

For each allowed connection, ask what the destination is, why the task needs it, and whether the request could carry sensitive data. A package download, source-control operation, or third-party API call should not automatically imply unrestricted access to every host reachable from the runtime. Where a third-party service requires authentication, keep the credential in a trusted broker and authorize only the specific request or destination. Do not place a long-lived key in the sandbox environment for convenience.

Translate the intended policy into explicit route checks. Review DNS resolution, internal service names, localhost and other local interfaces, cloud metadata services, and cloud control-plane routes. These are implementation checks for your environment, not a guarantee supplied by an allowlist alone: verify what the sandbox can actually reach from inside the deployed configuration.

  • Allow only named destinations needed for the task; deny broad outbound access by default.
  • Keep internal and production routes inaccessible unless a separately reviewed design requires a narrowly scoped exception.
  • Use a trusted proxy or service for third-party access when credentials need to be attached.
  • Log allowed and denied requests in a system the sandbox cannot alter.
  • Test both the permitted path and representative forbidden paths from within the sandbox.

How do you keep credentials away from agent-readable code?

Give the harness and sandbox distinct identities. The execution environment should have no production write credentials by default. OpenAI warns that agent-generated code can read environment variables, so a key stored there is available to code running in that environment. The same least-privilege rule applies to files, mounted secrets, command-line arguments, and any other channel from which the agent’s process can read a credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep long-lived application and third-party secrets in a secrets manager or trusted service. If the task genuinely needs an authenticated operation, have the trusted side broker it with a short-lived, task-scoped credential or proxy request, limited to the necessary permission and destination. Avoid giving the agent a general-purpose token when the trusted service can perform the one permitted action on its behalf.

Credential scoping must account for where a token can be sent, not only what it can do. A narrowly permissioned token may still expose data if the sandbox can transmit it to an unapproved endpoint. Pair identity restrictions with egress controls, and keep credential injection outside the sandbox when possible.

If exposure is suspected, treat the credential as compromised: revoke or rotate it, inspect trusted logs for use, and review the path by which it became accessible. Do not rely on deleting a file or resetting the workspace as proof that a copied secret is no longer usable.

How should prompt injection and tool requests be handled?

Prompt injection is a path from untrusted input to a consequential action. External content—such as a document or page the agent is asked to process—may influence the agent to transmit information, follow a link, or invoke a tool. OpenAI’s March 11, 2026 guidance on resisting prompt injection frames the risk around that connection between an untrusted source and a consequential capability.

A sandbox limits what execution can reach, but it does not make the model’s interpretation trustworthy. Treat model output as an untrusted request, not as authorization. Put deterministic checks between the request and the capability: validate tool arguments, enforce an allowlist of permitted actions, and require human approval for high-impact operations. Sensitive transmissions or irreversible actions should be blocked unless a separate policy explicitly permits them.

Production deployment should require an independent pipeline that verifies and authorizes the change. The agent may produce a patch or request a deployment, but it should not be able to approve the request, supply its own authorization, or bypass the pipeline. This way, an instruction embedded in untrusted content cannot turn into a production change merely because the model followed it.

Which isolation runtime should you choose?

Choose a boundary that fits the workload and threat model rather than relying on a product label or assuming one runtime is universally safest. The Kubernetes SIG Agent Sandbox documentation describes runtime-agnostic support and identifies gVisor and Kata Containers as stronger runtime choices. It does not establish a universal winner or provide a quantified escape-resistance comparison.

Decision axis What to assess
Isolation boundary Determine whether the workload uses a shared-kernel container, a userspace-kernel sandbox, or VM-grade isolation, and what a compromised process could reach in that configuration.
Workload compatibility Check required system calls, packages, filesystem behavior, networking, and persistence against the runtime you plan to deploy.
Network and identity Confirm that egress, workload identity, and per-task credentials can be restricted independently of the execution boundary.
Lifecycle Decide whether runs must be ephemeral or stateful, and how cleanup, snapshots, and resumability will work.
Operations Account for infrastructure, patching, monitoring, and runtime ownership in your environment.
Evidence Test the exact deployed configuration with adversarial inputs and attempts to cross the boundary. Do not infer a security guarantee from the runtime name.

For Kubernetes-native workflows, the Agent Sandbox project documents declarative resources for stateful, singleton workloads. Its documentation, last modified April 24, 2026, also describes relevant cluster controls: RBAC, namespaces, network policies, quotas, persistent storage, scheduled deletion, and hibernation. These controls complement runtime isolation; they do not remove the need to test the actual workload permissions and routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you verify that the sandbox contains failures?

Test containment, not just whether the agent completes its assigned task. Build negative tests that attempt to cross each important boundary, run them from inside the same deployed sandbox configuration used for real work, and check the result in independent logs. A denied request that is not observable can be difficult to distinguish from a test that never exercised the policy.

  • Filesystem: attempt to read host files or paths outside the permitted workspace.
  • Network: attempt to reach an unapproved destination, an internal service, or a production endpoint.
  • Credentials: inspect the sandbox’s process environment and accessible files for credentials that should remain outside it; try to reuse any intentionally scoped token beyond its permitted purpose.
  • Tools: submit disallowed arguments or requests for high-impact operations and verify that policy blocks them or routes them for approval.
  • Artifacts: verify that generated outputs cannot promote themselves into a trusted repository or deployment path without independent review.
  • Audit and recovery: confirm that the trusted system records relevant events and can stop a run or revoke access without relying on the sandbox.

Repeat these checks when mounts, runtimes, network policy, tool implementations, or workload identities change. Record what was tested, the configuration under test, and the observed results. Do not treat a successful task run as evidence that the sandbox resisted an attack, and do not claim a universal escape rate or security advantage without measured evidence for your specific setup.

What should happen when a run fails or exposure is suspected?

Plan the response before granting access. The harness should be able to stop execution, disable further tool calls, revoke task-scoped credentials, preserve trusted audit events, and quarantine outputs for review. Recovery authority belongs outside the sandbox: a compromised or confused process should not be responsible for deciding whether it has been contained.

  1. Stop the run and block new requests from its identity.
  2. Revoke or rotate any credential that may have entered the execution context.
  3. Review independent network, tool, identity, and deployment logs for attempted or successful access.
  4. Quarantine the workspace and outputs; do not promote artifacts until they have been reviewed.
  5. Reset or discard the environment according to its lifecycle policy, then correct the boundary that permitted the exposure before resuming similar work.

The response depends on what the environment could reach. A task with no production identity, no broad network path, and a reviewed artifact handoff has a smaller incident scope than one that can directly modify production. That is why containment is an architecture decision made before the agent runs, not a cleanup step after it fails.
