How to Safely Use AI Assistants With Email, Documents, and Web Pages

Treat email, files, and webpages as untrusted input. Give AI assistants narrow tasks and permissions, then check recipients, contents, and destinations before approving consequential actions.

You can reduce the risk of an AI assistant misusing email, documents, or webpages by giving it a specific, limited task, restricting access to what it needs, and reviewing any consequential action before it happens. Treat instructions inside material the assistant reads as untrusted: a message or page can contain directions aimed at the assistant, not just information for you. These precautions lower risk, but they cannot guarantee that every attack will be detected or stopped.

What is prompt injection?

Prompt injection is an attempt to influence an AI assistant by placing instructions in content it reads. Those instructions may be hidden among otherwise ordinary material, and the assistant may have difficulty distinguishing content it should analyze from directions it should follow. OpenAI compares the tactic to phishing: someone uses misleading content to push the system toward something the user did not ask it to do. NIST defines prompt injection as an attack exploiting the combination of untrusted input with a prompt from a higher-trust party, such as an application designer. NIST’s glossary definition describes the technical pattern.

For everyday use, the important point is that material you ask an assistant to read is not automatically safe to treat as instructions. OpenAI’s user guidance puts it plainly: “Giving your agent explicit instructions makes it harder for attackers to succeed.” OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance

Can an AI assistant follow instructions hidden in email, documents, or webpages?

It can be exposed to instructions embedded in any material it retrieves or reads, including email, attachments, shared documents, file-search results, and websites. A malicious message could tell an assistant to ignore your request, find a private record, and send it elsewhere. A webpage could try to steer a recommendation. Browser content may also include embedded documents, advertisements, or material loaded dynamically.

You do not need to recognize every suspicious phrase to use an assistant more safely. Treat external content as untrusted, state your own task clearly, and pay particular attention to actions that send information or change something outside the conversation. OpenAI describes prompt injection as a continuing security challenge in its overview of the threat; browser defenses are also an active area of work, as described by Anthropic’s browser-use research.

What could go wrong when an assistant reads your inbox or files?

An assistant influenced by hostile content could abandon your task, give a manipulated answer, or use its access to expose private information. The risk is greater when sensitive information is available and the assistant can take actions, rather than merely summarize text. For example, a system that can both search private files and send messages has more ways to turn misleading instructions into an unintended disclosure than one asked to summarize a single document.

Browsing can disclose information even without a visible message containing it. Websites commonly record requested URLs, so an attacker may try to induce an assistant to put sensitive details into a link it visits. OpenAI says its URL-related safeguards are intended to prevent quiet leakage of user-specific data through links. They have a limited scope: the safeguards do not certify that a page is truthful or make all browsing safe. OpenAI’s explanation of link safety

How do I safely use AI with my email?

Keep reading and acting separate where possible. Ask for a summary of specified messages or a draft for you to review, rather than giving open-ended authority to “handle” your inbox.

  • Make the task specific. Name the messages or information to summarize, and say whether you want a summary, a draft, or another bounded result. Avoid vague instructions such as “take care of anything that needs doing.”
  • Limit inbox access. If the task can be done with selected messages or pasted text, do not grant broader access to your mailbox. Use available permission controls to keep the assistant’s reach to what the task requires.
  • Review before sending. Before approving a reply or forwarding action, inspect the recipient, message, attachments, and information being shared. Be cautious if the request to send something came only from an email the assistant read, rather than from you.

How do I safely use AI with documents and web pages?

Apply the same principle to files and browsing: the assistant may read external content, but that content should not be allowed to expand the task you assigned.

  • Share only what is needed. If a question can be answered without a private file, signed-in account, or broad file-search access, leave those out of scope.
  • Ask for analysis before action. Have the assistant summarize a document, compare specified passages, or draft a response. Decide yourself whether to apply the result, follow a link, or share it.
  • Check actions involving links or destinations. Before approving a request to visit a link, upload a file, or send information elsewhere, verify what will be shared and where it will go. A link-safety control aimed at preventing URL leakage is not a general endorsement of the page.
  • Watch sensitive tasks. OpenAI recommends keeping the user involved when an agent operates in sensitive contexts and when it is about to take consequential actions. Its material on designing agents to resist prompt injection describes protections as layered rather than a reason to grant unrestricted authority.

What should I check before confirming an AI assistant’s action?

Before allowing an assistant to send, purchase, or change something, inspect the actual action rather than relying on a short description of it. Check:

  • Recipient or destination: Is the message going to the intended person, or is the file or data going to the intended service?
  • Contents: What text, files, or private details will be included?
  • Account and permissions: Is the assistant acting through the account you intended, with no unnecessary access?
  • Reason for the action: Did you ask for it, or did the request appear only in an email, document, or webpage?

Pause if you cannot inspect what will happen or if the action exceeds the task you gave. Provider safeguards can help, but official guidance describes prompt injection as an evolving, unresolved problem. OpenAI’s work on hardening ChatGPT Atlas against prompt injection and its Deep research guidance are examples of product-specific controls and practices, not proof that every attack is prevented.
