Remove AWS Network Firewall in two stages: move traffic off every firewall endpoint, then delete the firewall and only its unused dependencies. Deleting first can disrupt routing or remove inspection unexpectedly. Before you start, record the current routes, choose the replacement traffic path, and identify endpoint associations—including ones in other VPCs.
Before you delete: map the firewall and its traffic paths
Start with the firewall’s subnet mappings and Availability Zones, then identify the firewall endpoint associated with each mapping. Also check for VPC endpoint associations: they can create endpoints in VPCs beyond the firewall’s primary VPC. AWS’s firewall deletion guide and firewall settings guide describe these resources and deletion considerations.

Record the relevant route tables before editing them. Decide where traffic should go after inspection by this firewall ends: directly to its former destination, through another inspection layer, or along another organization-approved path. The replacement must fit the VPC’s actual ingress and egress design; AWS’s getting-started example illustrates one routing setup, not a universal replacement architecture.
- Check route tables for every Availability Zone where the firewall has a subnet mapping.
- For each endpoint association, identify its VPC, subnet mapping, endpoint, and route-table references.
- Confirm the intended replacement preserves the security inspection your network requires, as well as appropriate ingress and egress routing and Availability Zone coverage.
- Coordinate with the association’s owner if it belongs to another account or party.
Move routes off the firewall endpoints
Update each affected route table so it no longer targets a firewall endpoint. Replace that target with the route for the path you selected; do not simply remove a route if that would leave traffic without its intended destination or inspection.

In AWS’s introductory internet-gateway example, the cleanup restores the internet-gateway and subnet routes to their pre-firewall configuration and removes the endpoint route-table configuration. Production networks may differ, so use the recorded routes and your approved design rather than copying the example blindly.
The key deletion prerequisite is explicit in the DeleteFirewall API reference: “When the route tables no longer use the firewall endpoints, you can remove the firewall safely.” Verify the route tables across all relevant Availability Zones before proceeding.

Remove endpoint associations and disable logging
Delete endpoint associations only after their routes are clear
For each VPC endpoint association, inspect its subnet mapping and find route-table entries that target its endpoint. Remove or replace those routes first, then delete the association. The DeleteVpcEndpointAssociation API reference covers this operation. If you do not own an association, arrange for its owner to remove it; do not leave associated endpoints out of the cleanup just because they are in another VPC.
Turn off all firewall logging
Disable logging before deleting the firewall. In the AWS console, go to VPC → Network Firewall → Firewalls, select the firewall, open Firewall details, and edit Logging. Deselect every configured log type—Flow, Alert, and TLS—then save. AWS documents the steps in Updating a AWS Network Firewall logging configuration.

Delete the firewall carefully
Once route tables no longer reference its endpoints, endpoint associations are removed, and logging is disabled, delete the firewall in the console or through the API. AWS says console deletion may take a few minutes; it does not give an exact duration.
For API or CLI deletion, delete protection must be false. Disable it only as part of the planned removal. AWS warns that the DeleteFirewall operation cannot be reverted, so verify the firewall identity and routing changes before submitting the deletion.

Clean up policies and rule groups only when unused
Deleting the firewall does not mean every related configuration is safe to delete. A firewall policy may be used by other firewalls, and rule groups or TLS inspection configurations may be referenced by policies. Check those references before removing any such resource. AWS says it generally detects references, but recommends checking all firewalls or policies when certainty is needed because detection can rarely miss a reference. Verify the network after removal
After deletion, confirm that the firewall and its endpoint associations are gone, the relevant route tables match the intended design, and no firewall-specific policy or rule group remains unintentionally. Check connectivity and the expected inspection path using your normal operational monitoring. AWS’s tutorial cleanup removes tutorial-owned resources to prevent charges for those resources, but the cited procedure does not specify a universal billing stop time.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting before rerouting: a route can still target an endpoint that is being removed, or traffic can lose an intended inspection path.
- Missing an association in another VPC: inventory associations as well as the main firewall and coordinate with other owners.
- Leaving logging enabled: disable every configured log type and save before deletion.
- Removing shared configuration: verify policies, rule groups, and TLS inspection configurations have no remaining references.
- Treating API deletion as reversible: check delete protection and confirm the target before invoking the operation.
