Give an AI assistant only the inbox access its task needs: start with metadata or read-only access, and keep sending, editing, archiving, and deleting behind your explicit approval. Treat every email as untrusted input; a malicious message can try to manipulate an assistant that reads it.
Can an email hack your AI assistant?
An email cannot necessarily take over an assistant, but it can contain instructions designed to manipulate the system processing it. This is called prompt injection: hostile text is embedded in content the assistant reads, rather than entered directly by you. OpenAI describes the risk in its prompt-injection guidance, and Google warns that malicious email content may affect Gemini. Google’s Workspace MCP documentation also cautions that hidden instructions in emails or documents could hijack a session.

Safeguards may warn about suspicious content, omit it, or decline to answer. They are useful defenses, not a guarantee that every malicious message will be detected. Limit the assistant’s access and authority even if the service advertises protections.

What permissions does the assistant actually need?
Match permissions to the job, not to a broad label such as “secure” or “read-only.” Google’s OAuth policy says apps should request the smallest set of scopes necessary for functionality the user knowingly chose. Its advice applies to apps using Google OAuth; the least-privilege principle is useful when evaluating other integrations too.

For Gmail, Google distinguishes these scopes:

These names describe Gmail API permissions, not Outlook or Microsoft 365 permissions. Connectors may request multiple scopes, and availability or classification can change. Check the live consent screen and current provider documentation before approving.
Should you give AI access to your Gmail?
It can be reasonable when the task is useful and you can limit access appropriately. For summarizing or finding messages, begin with a read-only option if the integration offers one. Metadata-only access is narrower when message bodies are unnecessary. Do not grant sending, modification, or deletion rights just because the assistant can request them.

Google’s Gmail scope reference identifies mail.google.com as especially broad because it includes permanent deletion, and says it should be used only when that capability is needed. Google’s Secure AI Framework likewise recommends limiting an agent’s permissions and the actions it can take. No single permission label settles the question: judge the actual scopes and controls shown for the integration.

How to connect an inbox more safely
- Define the task. Decide whether the assistant needs to search, summarize, classify, draft, send, archive, or delete. A narrow task does not justify broad access to the whole inbox.
- Inspect the consent request. Look for access to message bodies, compose or send, modify or delete, and any unrelated account data. Compare each permission with the task you chose.
- Start with the narrowest useful access. Choose metadata-only access if headers are enough, or read-only access if the assistant must understand message contents. Add write permissions only for a specific feature that requires them.
- Keep consequential actions under review. Require confirmation before sending or changing a message. Before approving, inspect the recipient, the exact message body, and the action—not only the assistant’s summary of what it plans to do.
- Give a precise prompt. Specify the messages, date range, or task. For example, ask for a summary of messages from a defined period rather than telling the assistant to “handle everything” in your inbox. OpenAI advises giving agents specific instructions and reviewing consequential actions before confirming them.
- Verify the integration. Confirm the app’s identity and review its requested scopes. Google cautions against connecting Workspace MCP servers to untrusted or unverified applications and recommends reviewing actions.
- Revoke access when finished. Remove the integration’s access when you no longer need it. Google’s OAuth guidance says tokens should be stored encrypted, revoked when no longer needed, and deleted after revocation.
How to choose an inbox-connected assistant
Compare the controls the integration actually offers rather than relying on marketing descriptions. The right choice depends on the task and the sensitivity of the inbox.

- Read scope: Does it access metadata, selected messages if supported, or message bodies across the inbox?
- Write scope: Can it only read, or can it draft, send, archive, modify, or delete?
- Approval flow: Must you confirm before a consequential action? Does the confirmation show the precise action, recipient, and content?
- Data handling: What do the provider’s terms say about retention, model training, subprocessors, and deletion?
- Transparency: Can you see the scopes requested and review a record of the assistant’s tool actions?
Retention and training practices vary by provider and integration; there is no universal setting to assume. Read the applicable privacy terms and consent screen for the service you are connecting.
