Choose the control by the outcome you want: mute to reduce what you see or the alerts you receive, block to cut off some interaction or contact, and restrict where a platform offers a quieter way to limit someone’s interactions. Those labels do not mean the same thing everywhere. Check the service-specific effects below before relying on a control to stop messages, comments, mentions, or profile views.
What do block, mute, and restrict actually do?
Social platforms define these controls independently. A mute may affect a feed, a notification, or a chat alert; a block may stop some forms of contact without making public content invisible; and “restrict” is not a universal feature. Decide which unwanted outcome you need to change, then use the platform’s own help or settings to confirm the exact effect and current menu labels.

- You want fewer posts or alerts: look for a mute control, and check whether it applies to feed content, notifications, or both.
- You want to stop contact or interaction: check what a block prevents on that service, including messages, comments, mentions, and chat requests.
- You want to limit someone without a full block: use Restrict only where the platform documents it, and verify which interactions it changes.
- You are dealing with harassment or threats: consider reporting the conduct as well as using account controls. Blocking and muting are not substitutes for a report.
How the controls differ by platform
| Platform and control | Documented effect | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube: block a channel | Stops the blocker from seeing that channel’s live-chat messages and comments and receiving its mentions. The blocked channel also no longer sees the blocker’s live-chat or comment messages or receives mentions. | A creator may still see comments in YouTube Studio. This is not the same as hiding a user from a creator’s channel or blocking messages. |
| YouTube: hide a user from a creator’s channel | The user’s comments, live chats, and Community posts are not visible on that channel; the user cannot create clips from the creator’s videos or streams. The user is not notified. | This creator moderation control does not establish that the user is blocked across YouTube. |
| YouTube: block messages | Prevents further messages; the existing conversation remains in the inbox. The other person is not notified, but can see that they can no longer message. | Availability is constrained by region, age, login status, and rollout. |
| X: mute an account | Removes the account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it. The account can still send you Direct Messages, and it is not told that you muted it. | Do not rely on mute to stop contact. |
| X: block an account | X says a blocked account can see the block when visiting your profile. | The supplied official information does not establish every effect on messages, replies, mentions, or public-content visibility. |
| TikTok: mute a chat | Suppresses inbox notifications from that person; the setting is called “Mute notifications.” | This does not establish that the person is prevented from sending messages or that the chat is hidden. |
| Reddit: block a user | Cuts off contact, including direct messages and chat requests. Reddit’s help states a limit of 1,000 blocked users as of October 4, 2026. | The documented contact effects should not be read as a guarantee that all public content is invisible in every context. |
| Reddit: moderator mute | Community moderators can mute and unmute users in community management. | This is a moderator control, not the same as an individual blocking someone. |
| Discord: block or privacy settings | Discord documents blocking and a separate setting to disable direct messages from non-friends in shared servers. | Shared-server privacy settings and blocking are separate controls; the exact current menu labels should be checked in the app. |
| Instagram and Facebook: Restrict and related controls | Meta identifies block and restrict tools for Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Its educational material presents Restrict as a tool intended to help address bullying and describes mute as a way to take a break from an account you follow. | Exact current effects on comments, messages, stories, notifications, and profile visibility are not established here; verify them in the relevant app or Help Center. |
How to use the documented controls
YouTube: block from live chat, then undo through your Google Account
YouTube’s computer help describes blocking a channel from a live-chat message or its menu. To reverse that action, use the block list in your Google Account. A channel block does not guarantee that a creator cannot see comments in YouTube Studio.
YouTube: hide someone from your channel
Hiding is a creator moderation action for your channel, not a general block. YouTube Help provides a way to manage the hidden-users list in YouTube Studio. The person is not notified. Use this when the goal is to keep that user’s contributions from appearing on your channel, rather than to block the channel across YouTube.

YouTube: block messages separately
YouTube’s video-sharing and messaging help treats message blocking as a separate control. The conversation stays in the inbox after a messaging block, and the other person can tell they can no longer message you. Access may vary with region, age, whether you are logged in, and feature rollout.
TikTok: mute chat notifications
Open the chat, select More options, then use Mute notifications. This verified setting concerns inbox alerts; do not assume it prevents incoming messages.

Reddit: distinguish personal blocks from moderator actions
A personal block cuts off direct messages and chat requests. Reddit also offers separate chat-safety controls for who may send chat requests and for muting or hiding existing direct chats. Community moderators have their own mute and unmute controls; those are not a substitute for a personal block.

Discord: separate blocking from shared-server message privacy
Discord’s setting for disabling direct messages from non-friends in shared servers is a server-context privacy control, not the same as blocking an individual. Check the current labels in the app before changing either setting.
Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger: confirm the specific effect first
Meta documents block and restrict tools across these services, and describes mute as a way to take a break from an account you follow. Because the exact current effects and steps can vary by service and are not established here, open the relevant app’s settings or official Help Center before relying on Restrict, mute, or block to control a particular kind of interaction.

Will the other person know?
Visibility depends on the control and service. X says a muted account is not told, while a blocked account can see the block on your profile. YouTube says a user hidden from a creator’s channel is not notified; for YouTube message blocks, the person is not notified but can see they can no longer message. Do not assume another platform sends or withholds a notice unless its current help says so.
What to do if the unwanted contact is harassment
Use the platform’s reporting process for abusive or rule-breaking conduct; a block or mute only changes the interaction covered by that control. YouTube’s help directs users to report abuse and harassment, and Reddit points users to report rule-breaking conduct. Preserve relevant information if you may need it for a report, and use the platform’s current safety guidance for urgent threats.
